Study of uranium particle fuel fabrication with the external gelation process with the vibration dropping Method

The external gelation process is one of the candidates of MOX particle fuel fabrication for advanced recycle system. It was necessary to perform preliminary fuel fabrication with uranium before starting MOX tests. As the result of the preliminary examination, Basics conditions of the fabrication were obtained: (1)Optimized uranyl nitrate solution and PVA solution, as raw materials were prepared. (2)The frequency of vibration and the amount of flow were obtained with optimized broth (mixture) in the vibration dropping process. (3)The influence of composition of broth and concentration of ammonia solution on gelation process was obtained. (4)Impurities after aging, washing and drying spHerical gel were surveyed, (5)The spherical gel were calcined to oxide particles and the particles were characterized by TG-DTA, therefore it is certain that outlook on the sintered particles as final products is very clear. On the top of that, there were no fatal technicalities of the external gelation process through material balance and a diameter dispersion of spherical gel and oxide particles. It is necessary to perform uranium examination to solve some new problems, for instant, surface crack of spherical gel. Although almost of all the preparations are completed and fabrication examination of MOX particles with vibration dropping equipment are ready for starting.

To evaluate materials balance in nuclear fuel cycle quickly and quantitatively the fuel cycle requirement code "FAMILY" was improved. And an accumulated TRU&LLFP quantity analysis code was developed. The contents are as follows: (1)A calculation ability of minor actinide production and expenditure was added to the "FAMILY" code. (2)An output program for the "FAMILY" calculation results was developed. (3)A simple version of "FAMILY" code was developed. (4)An analysis code for accumulated TRU&LLFP quantity in nuclear fuel cycle was developed.

Development of system analysis code for pyrochemical process using molten salt electrorifining

This report describes accomplishment of development of a cathode processor calculation code to simulate the mass and heat transfer phenomena with the distillation process and development of an analytical model for cooling behavior of the pyrochemical process cell on personal computers. The pyrochemical process using molten salt electrorefining would introduce new technologies for new fuels of particle oxide, particle nitride and metallic fuels. The cathode processor calculation code with distillation process was developed. A code validation calculation has been conducted on the basis of the benchmark problem for natural convection in a square cavity. Results by using the present code agreed well for the velocity-temperature fields, the maximum velocity and its location with the benchmark solution published in a paper. The functions have been added to advance the reality in simulation and to increase the efficiency in utilization. The test run has been conducted using the code with the above modification for an axisymmetric enclosed vessel simulating a cathode processor, and the capability of the distillation process simulation with the code has been confirmed. An analytical model for cooling behavior of the pyrochemical process cell was developed. The analytical model was selected by comparing benchmark analysis with detailed analysis on engineering workstation. Flow and temperature distributions were confirmed by the result of steady state analysis. In the result of transient cooling analysis, an initial transient peak of temperature occurred at balanced heat condition in the steady-state analysis. Final gas temperature distribution was dependent on gas circulation flow in transient condition. Then there were different final gas temperature distributions on the basis of the result of steady-state analysis. This phenomenon has a potential for it's own metastable condition. The study and the development to put FBR (Fast Breeder Reactor) to practical use have been doing. So many kinds of technologies are investigated to construct nuclear fuel recycle received to the society. The most important aim of reprocessing has been to extract U and Pu from spent fuels effectively, but, now, the demands for reprocessing are many kinds on nuclear fuel recycle system's construction. These need to be accepted sufficiently. The system that consists of electrolysis, extraction, with molten salt and melting metal, volatilization and condensation using the difference of vapor pressure is suggested, because, differently from LWR (Light Water Reactor), FBR can use the low decontamination factor's fuel. When the engineering scale plant is designed, the dry reprocessing has unsolved problems(ex. process flow) because of less demonstrative scale plants of the dry reprocessing than ones of the wet reprocessing. So the analysis and the estimation of mass balance that is most fundamental in the dry reprocessing system's design need to keep up with the system's alteration (to add new processes etc.) flexibly. This study aim is to develop the mass balance estimation code of dry reprocessing that satisfies the demand mentioned above.

A Study on the reprocessing of spent FBR-fuel by ion exchange

In order to develop an economically efficient wet separation process other than solvent extraction for reprocessing spent FBR-fuel (MOX fuel), we have investigated the possibility of an advanced ion exchange process. Based on the fundamental research results, we proposed an advanced ion exchange process considering the characteristics of FBR-fuel cycle. The separation system consists of a main separation process using a novel anion exchanger which has a rapid kinetics and two extraction chromatography processes for minor actinides isolation using novel impregnation adsorbents with high selectivity. The chemical flow sheet, mass balance chart, list of main equipment and installation layout of each equipment were estimated and designed for the process in a reprocessing plant with the capacity of 200 tHM/y FBR-fuel. The process was pfeliminarny evalualed from the aspects of economy performance, recovery of potentially useable resources, minimization of environmental risk and proliferation-resistance by comparing with the advanced PUREX process. Furthermore, the subjects which are important for the practical application of the process are also listed.

Study of assessing aqueous reprocessing process for the pipeless reprocessing plant

The purpose of this study is to investigate the possibility of new reprocessing process for the purpose of introducing pipeless plant concept, where aqueous separation methods other than solvent extraction method are adopted in order to develop more economical FBR fuel (MOX fuel) reprocessing process. At it's first stage, literature survey on precipitation method, crystallization method and ion-exchange method was performed. Based on the results, following processes were candidated for pipeless reprocessing plant. (1)The process adopting crystallization method and peroxide precipitation method (2)The process adopting oxalate precipitation method (3)The process under mild aqueous conditions (crystallization method and precipitation method) (4)The process adopting crystallization method and ion-exchange method (5)The process adopting crystallization method and solvent extraction method The processes (1)$$sim$$(5) were compared with each others in terms of competitiveness to the conventional reference process, and merits and demerits were evaluated from the viewpoint of applicability to pipeless reprocessing plant, safety, economy, Efficiencies in consumption of Resources, non-proliferation, and, Operation and Maintenance. As a result, (1)The process adopting crystallization method and peroxide precipitation method was selected as the most reasonable process to pipeless plant. Preliminary criticality safety analyses, main process chemical flowsheet, main equipment list and layout of mobile vessels and stations were reported for the (1) process.

The 9$$^{th}$$ test of Joule-Heated Cylindrical Electrode Melter - Engineering Scale (JCEM-E9 Test) was carried out from June to July 1996, as a part of the development program on an advanced glass melter. The principal purpose of the test was to estimate the effect of noble metal on operation of the melter with simulated high-level liquid waste. Besides, we also evaluated the basic operational characteristics with corrosion of electrodes, qualities of produced glass etc. JCEM-E is an electric glass melter with an internal electrode and an external electrode in a subsidiary furnace. The internal electrode is a rod inserted in the center of external electrode that is a cylindrical tank. The glass is melted by conducting electric current through the molten glass between the internal and external electrodes. The subsidiary furnace is composed of multi-layer refractories inside a metallic casing and is equipped with the resistance heaters. Melting surface area is 0.35 m$$^{2}$$ that i8 approximately half of 0.66 m$$^{2}$$ of TVF melter. In the test, 13 batches of glass was produced and total weight of produced glass was 3663kg. As a result, The maximum processing rate of JCEM-E with simulated HLLW including noble metals was 4.20$$sim$$5.60kg/h, and decreased to less than 80 percent compared with JCEM-E8 Test with non-noble metals HLLW. It was considered that the decrease of the rate arose from concentration of current due to non-uniform distribution of noble metals in molten glass. Judging from the balance of feed and draining, and as a consequence of the observation inside the melter after the test, the draining of noble metals from the nozzle was good. As for the quality of glass produced in the test, properties of concern were comparable with those of standard glass of TVF.
