A venturi scrubber is one of the filtered venting systems and removes fuel productions (FPs) by spraying with the scrubbing water by self-priming. The FPs removal performance of the system was confirmed by various tests. However, the flow pattern of the water-steam two-phase flow and pressure distributions in the venturi scrubber which is one of the most important factors for the removal performance has not been experimentally clarified. In this study, water-steam flow behavior and pressure distributions in a single venturi scrubber were measured. The experiment resulted in the scrubbing water decreased with increasing the steam throat velocity with the increase of the throat pressure. On the lower steam velocity conditions, spray was generated from the wavy of the water column ejected from the water supply pores. The water film was generated with the increase of even higher velocity. The pressures for each position in the venturi nozzle were almost the same and approximately 100 kPa in the self-priming mode. On the scrubbing water stop condition, the pressure was higher at the throat than the water head pressure and negative pressure at the downstream of the throat. The result indicate that the scrubbing water can be supplied at this position on the decrease and the stop conditions of the supplied scrubbing water with the high steam velocity.

So celled multi Venturi scrubbers systems are installed in light water reactor systems to realize filtered venting at accident. This system is composed of many Venturi scrubbers (VS) and a water pool. However, the scrubbing mechanism of the self-priming VS including effects of gas mass flow rate and shape of the VS are understood insufficiently in the previous studies. Therefore, we started numerical and experimental study to understand the detailed two-phase flow behavior in the VS. In this paper, to understand the VS operation characteristics for the filtered venting, we performed numerical simulations of two-phase flow behavior in the VS. In the first step of this study, we perform numerical simulations of supersonic flow by the TPFIT to validate the applicability of the TPFIT for high velocity flow like flow in the VS. In the second step, numerical simulation of two-phase flow behavior in the VS including self-priming phenomena. As the results, dispersed flow in the VS was reproduced in the numerical simulation, as same as the visualization experiments.

From the viewpoint of protecting a containment and suppressing the diffusion of radioactive materials in accident of nuclear power plants, it is important to develop the device which allows a filtered venting of contaminated high pressure gas. In the filtered venting system that used in European reactors, so called Multi Venturi Scrubbers System is used to realize filtered venting without any power supply. This system is able to define to be composed of Venturi Scrubbers (VS) and a bubble column. In the VS, scrubbing of contaminated gas is promoted by both gas releases through the submerged VS and gas-liquid contact with splay flow. However, the scrubbing mechanism of the VS is understood insufficiently. Therefore, we started numerical and experimental study to understand the two-phase flow behavior in the VS. In this paper, we performed numerical simulations of two-phase flow behavior in the VS by the TPFIT. In the first step, we perform numerical simulations of supersonic flow by the TPFIT to validate the applicability of the TPFIT for high velocity flow in the VS.

A Multi Venturi Scrubber System (MVSS) is one of the filtered venting devices, and used for existing reactors in Europe. One of the main components of the MVSS is a self-priming Venturi Scrubber (VS). It is considered that a dispersed or dispersed annular flow is formed in the VS by a self-priming phenomena. In the self-priming phenomena, the liquid was suctioned from a surrounding region to the inside of the VS. And a part of the radioactive materials in the gas are eliminated to the liquid through the gas-liquid interface of the dispersed or annular dispersed flow. Therefore, to consider the MVSS operation characteristics, it is important to evaluate the liquid flow rate of the self-priming of the VS including the occurrence condition of the self-priming. In this paper, to understand the self-priming phenomena of the VS for the filtered venting, theoretical preliminary analysis for evaluating liquid flow rate of the self-priming of the VS and experiment to observe self-priming phenomena and measure the liquid flow rare of the self-priming were performed. By comparing these results, we discussed about the mechanism of the self-priming phenomena. As a result, the self-priming phenomena in the VS was observed. In addition, at a higher gas mass flux, the suspension of the self-priming phenomena was confirmed both experimentally and theoretically.

As revealed by Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster, countermeasures against severe accident in nuclear power plants are an urgent need. In particular, from the viewpoint of protecting containment and suppressing the diffusion of radioactive materials, it is important to develop a device which allows filtered venting of contaminated high pressure gas. In the filtered venting system that used in European reactors, so called Multi Venturi Scrubbers System is used to realize filtered venting without any power supply. This system is able to define to be composed of Venturi Scrubbers (VS) and a bubble column. In the VS, scrubbing of the contaminated gas is promoted by both gas releases through a submerged VS and gas-liquid contact with splay flow formed by liquid suctioned through a hole provided in the throat part of the VS. This type of VS is called self-priming ones. However, the mechanism of the self-priming VS are understood insufficiently in the previous studies. In this study, to understand operation characteristics of the VS for filtered venting, we discussed the mechanisms of self-priming phenomena and hydraulic behavior in the VS. In this paper, we conduct visualized observation of the hydraulic behavior in the VS and measure the liquid flow rate in the VS for understanding self-priming. As results, it is shown that the possibility that the VS decontamination performance falls low level with no self-priming.
