Characteristics of DARWIN were studied by both calculation and experiment. The calculated results indicate that DARWIN gives reasonable estimations of doses at most radiation fields. It was found from the experiment that DARWIN has an excellent property of measuring doses from all particles that significantly contribute to the background dose - photon, muon and neutron with wide energy ranges.

Applicability of the CsI(Tl)/Plastic phoswich detector was examined on radioactivity measurement of massive and large-area materials. The rise-time discrimination technique was applied in order to further improve the minimum detectable activity in the low-energy region. On the basis of the estimation of minimum detectable activity, it was made clear that the energy range of large-area plastic scintillation detector can be expanded down to a few tens of keV by adding a thin plate CsI(Tl) scintillator.

It was found that a thick (120140mm) moderator with 100% para hydrogen was optimal to provide the highest time- and energy- integrated neutron intensity below 15 meV together with the highetst possible pulse-peak intensity. Low-energy neutron distribution on the moderator viewed surface was found to exhibit an intensity-enhanced region at a picture frame part near premoderator. The rather peculiar distribution suggested that the moderator and the viewed surface must be designed so as to take the brighter region near premoderator in use.

With this new operational mode, called Shaped Pulse (SP), transients at the maximum power of 10 MW can be conducted for a few seconds. This new operational mode supplements the previous Natural Pulse (NP) operation at the maximum power of 23 GW for milliseconds. For high power transient operation, a simulator using a point kinetic model was developed, and characteristics of the NSRR in the new operational mode were examined through tests and calculations. With the new operational mode, new types of fuel irradiation tests simulating power oscillations of boiling water reactors (BWRs) can to be conducted in the NSRR. Reactor characteristics and capability, such as control rod worth, feedback reactivity, and operational limits of the NSRR for SP operations are discussed.
