A nano-diamond is an attractive neutron reflection material below cold neutron energy. The total neutron cross section of a nano-diamond was derived from a neutron transmission measurement over the neutron energy range of 0.2 meV to 100 meV because total neutron cross section data were not available. The total cross section of a nano-diamond with particle size of approximately 5 nm increased with a decrease in neutron energy to 0.2 meV. It was approximately two orders of magnitude larger than that of graphite at 0.2 meV. The contribution of inelastic scattering to the total cross section was to be shown negligible small at neutron energies of 1.2, 1.5, 1.9, 2.6, and 5.9 meV in the inelastic neutron scattering measurement. Moreover, small-angle neutron scattering measurements of the nano-diamond showed a large scattering cross section in the forward direction for low neutron energies.

Progress in calculation methods for radiation shielding are reviewed based on basis of the activities of research committees related to radiation shielding fields established in the Atomic Energy Society of Japan. A technological roadmap for the field of radiation shielding, progress and prospects for specific shielding calculation methods such as the Monte Carlo, discrete ordinate Sn transport, and simplified methods, and shielding experiments used to validate calculation methods are presented in this paper.

Spin-orbit fluctuations in frustrated heavy-fermion metal LiV$$_{2}$$O$$_{4}$$

Spin fluctuations were studied over a wide momentum ($$hbar$$$$Q$$) and energy ($$E$$) space in the frustrated ${it d}$-electron heavy-fermion metal LiV$$_{2}$$O$$_{4}$$ by time-of-flight inelastic neutron scattering. We observed the overall ${it Q-E}$ evolutions near the characteristic ${it Q}$ = 0.6 $AA $^{-1}$$ peak and found another weak broad magnetic peak around 2.4 $AA $^{-1}$$. The data are described by a simple response function, a partially delocalized magnetic form factor, and antiferromagnetic short-range spatial correlations, indicating that heavy-fermion formation is attributable to spin-orbit fluctuations with orbital hybridization.

Shielding study at the Fukui Prefectural Hospital Proton Therapy Center

At the Fukui Prefectural Hospital Proton Therapy Center, neutron doses behind concrete shields and at maze have been measured by using radiation monitors, DARWIN, Wendi-2, a rem meter, and solid state nuclear track detectors. The measured data were compared with the estimations by analytical models and Monte Carlo code PHITS. The analytical model with the parameters employed in shielding design of the facility gave considerably larger estimates than the measured data. This means that the facility was designed with an enough safety margin. The calculation results of PHITS were less than those of the analytical model, and were about 3 times larger than the measured data. From the view point of a safety policy with conservative estimation for shielding design, Monte Carlo simulation is a better tool for estimating radiation safety at accelerator-based proton treatment facilities.

Photoluminescence properties of carbon-doped $$beta$$-FeSi$$_{2}$$ nanocrystals

We report enhancement of intrinsic photoluminescence (PL) from $$beta$$-FeSi$$_{2}$$ nanocrystals by doping carbon. In the appropriate dose of C$$_{60}$$$$^{+}$$ ion implantation into the average nanocrystal size of 14 nm, the PL intensity was enhanced by 260% and increase of the exciton binding energy of 1.8 meV in comparison with that of the non-doped nanocrystal. Furthermore, we found that there was a clear correlation between the PL enhancement and increase of the exciton binding energy. This important result suggests that carbon atoms doped in the silicide lattice may play as an isoelectronic trap and probably form bound excitons with stable states as predicted theoretically. We found a new mechanism of the PL enhancement for $$beta$$-FeSi$$_{2}$$ nanocrystals.

Enhancement of IR light emission from $$beta$$-FeSi$$_{2}$$ nanocrystals embedded in Si

We have systematically investigated photoluminescence (PL) properties of $$beta$$-phase nanocrystals which are formed by a phase transition from metastable $$gamma$$-FeSi$$_{2}$$ with a Fluorite structure to $$beta$$-FeSi$$_{2}$$, and succeeded in enhancement of the PL intensity in the optimum conditions of double annealing process. For the PL enhancement, the time of postannealing at 800$$^{circ}$$C is dominated by the time of the preannealing at 400 or 500$$^{circ}$$C which is related to amount of the $$gamma$$-phase. After discussing some possible factors, we speculate that the PL enhancement observed in this study may be attributed mainly to improvement of the interface condition between the nanocrystal and Si, because the crystallographic epitaxial relationship among the phases, Si(111)//$$gamma$$(111)//$$beta$$(202)/(220) can be maintained during precipitation of the nanocrystal on Si(111).

The number of research reactors in the world is decreasing because of their aging. However, the planning to introduce the nuclear power plants is increasing in Asian countries. In these Asian countries, the key issue is the human resource development for operation and management of nuclear power plants after constructed them, and also the necessity of research reactor, which is used for lifetime extension of LWRs, progress of the science and technology, expansion of industry use, human resources training and so on, is increasing. From above backgrounds, the Neutron Irradiation and Testing Reactor Center began to discuss basic concept of a multipurpose low-power research reactor for education and training, etc. This design study is expected to contribute not only to design tool improvement and human resources development in the Neutron Irradiation and Testing Reactor Center but also to maintain and upgrade the technology on research reactors in nuclear power-related companies. This report treats the activities of the working group from July 2010 to June 2011 on the multipurpose low-power research reactor in the Neutron Irradiation and Testing Reactor Center and nuclear power-related companies.

Center for computational science and e-systems of Japan Atomic Energy Agency is carrying out R&D in the area of extra large-scale simulation technologies for solving nuclear plant structures in its entirety. Specifically, we focus on establishing a virtual plant vibration simulator on inter-connected supercomputers intended for seismic response analysis of a whole nuclear plant. The simulation of a whole plant is a very difficult task because an extremely large dataset must be processed. To overcome this difficulty, we have proposed and implemented a necessary simulation framework and computing platform. The computing platform enables an extra large-scale whole nuclear plant simulation to be carried out on a grid computing platform ITBL-IS and AEGIS. The simulation framework based on the computing platform has been applied to a linear elastic analysis of the reactor pressure vessel and cooling systems of the nuclear research facility, HTTR.

Radiation Shielding design/safety analysis required for licensing of the high intensity proton accelerator facility J-PARC (Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex) is in progress, using various high-energy particle transport codes. Shielding benchmark problems, mainly based on experiments, on thick target neutron yield, beam dump geometry, deep penetration and radiation streaming were prepared and analyzed by the shielding design codes, in order to estimate the code's accuracy. The results of analyses show that the calculation results agree with the experiments within a factor of two on the whole.

In order to safely and stably supply energy by nuclear means, structural integrity and design standards of the plant including factors such as aging must be confirmed, and its future conditions must be predicted with high reliability. Although full-scale experimentations are favorable for acquiring necessary information and carrying out investigative studies of the nuclear structures, such experiments are for most cases physically and financially impossible. Our objective is to establish an integrated full-scale simulation framework for simulating and quantitatively investing the vibration behavior of nuclear power plant equipments under earthquakes.

Unexpected accidents such as oil-tank fires caused by the earthquake and breakage of pipes of nuclear plants have occurred over the past several years. Higher reliability is thus now increasingly expected to maintain the safety of infrastructures. We have been intensely focused on the construction of an analysis system called the "three-dimensional virtual vibration testbed," which is a numerical simulation system for a nuclear plant which considers the interconnection of machines, pipes, buildings, and their foundations under real operating conditions. In this paper, the "part-wise analysis method" is proposed in which each structural component is treated independently and analyzed as an assembly structure. Further, the system configurations in a parallel distribution environment are described. This study shows one of the successful examples of the application of this method to a nuclear-plant cooling system that has tens of millions of degrees of freedom.

We have carried out an operation test of the EM-ACROSS at Tono, Japan. The EM-ACROSS signals were detected at a geomagnetic observatory 40km away from the transmitter located at Tono mine. The mean resistivity of the Toki granite formation is estimated to be 100 Ohm-m.
