The dry and wet depositions of atmospheric ammonia (NH$$_{3}$$) is one of the important pathways of nitrogen loads to aquatic ecosystems. Crop and livestock agriculture, one of the largest emitters of NH$$_{3}$$ in Asian countries, are known to cause high spatial and seasonal variation of NH$$_{3}$$ and influence the surrounding lake basin areas via its dry and wet deposition. However, the spatial characteristics of the NH$$_{3}$$ concentration in basin scale are not completely understood for regulation in NH$$_{3}$$ emission. Here we aim to clarify dominant factors of spatial and seasonal variations of the NH$$_{3}$$ concentration in a eutrophic lake basin surrounded by agricultural areas in Japan. Passive sampling over various land use categories in the basin was conducted at 36 sites in total from October 2018 to January 2020. Interestingly, the observed NH$$_{3}$$ concentration near the livestock houses were higher in winter than summer, which was inconsistent with knowledge of seasonal changes of current NH$$_{3}$$ emission inventory based on temperature-driven volatilization process. Comparing monthly NH$$_{3}$$ concentrations with various meteorological factors, we suggested the importance of seasonal advection of NH$$_{3}$$ from high emission sources to which has been rarely paid attention by the previous past studies. As for this, should be considered for lake ecosystem management since deposition of NH$$_{3}$$ is known to be closely related to the ecological processes such as phytoplankton blooming.

Review and evaluation on the surface area of vitrified products of high-level waste; Surface area increase factors due to fracturing and their bases for the performance assessment of geological disposal

A literature review was conducted on the increase in surface area of vitrified products of HLW due to the fracturing caused by cooling during glass pouring process and by mechanical impact, from the perspective of a parameter of the radionuclide release model in the performance assessment of geological disposal system studied overseas. The review was focused on the value of surface area increase factor set as a parameter in the model, the experimental work to evaluate an increase in surface area, and how the parameters on surface area were determined based on the experimental results. The surface area obtained from the experiments executed in Japan was also discussed in comparison with the overseas studies. On the basis of the investigation, the effects of various conditions on the surface area were studied, such as a diameter of vitrified product, cooling condition during and after the glass pouring, impact on vitrified products during their handling, environment after the closure of disposal facility, and others. The causes of fracturing are associated with the phenomena or events in the waste management process such as production, transport, storage, and disposal. The surface area increase factors set in the nuclide release model of the glass and their bases were reviewed. In addition, the measured values and the experimental methods for surface increase factors published so far were compared. Accordingly, the methods for measuring surface area as the bases were identified for these factors set in the models. The causes of fracturing and features of these factors were studied with respect to the relation with the waste management process. The results from the review and assessment can contribute to the expanding the knowledge for the conservative and realistic application of these factors to performance assessment, and to the developing and upgrading of safety case as a consequence.

Conceptual design of main magnets for the J-PARC RCS energy upgrade

At the J-PARC Main Ring (MR), there have been various investigation carried out at the moment aiming at the beam operation of MW order. As one of the investigations, a study of the Rapid-Cycling Synchrotron (RCS) magnets was implemented. Increase of the extraction energy of RCS was needed to reduce beam loss, as beam loss in the MR injection region was large under influence of Space Charge effect at the injection beam of 3GeV. Therefore conceptual design of the extraction energy upgrade using dipole and quadrupole magnets of RCS was performed. In this paper, we will report the contents of the study in extraction energy upgrade of RCS magnets and problems which became clear as a result.

Design of injection and extraction at an 8-GeV booster ring and the J-PARC Main Ring for Multi-MW output beam power

The 240-kW output beam power in the J-PARC 50-GeV Main Ring (MR) has been achieved for the 30-GeV user operation with the cycle time of 2.48 sec and the injected beam intensity with the output beam power of 380-kW equivalent from 3-GeV Rapid Cycling Synchrotron (RCS). The target of output beam power in MR is 750-kW by faster cycling and the injected beam intensity of 600-kW equivalent beam from the RCS. The MR are developing the new type power supplies of the MR main magnets and the high-impedance core of the MR RF cavities. The RCS will aim the designed output beam power of 1-MW from the beam commissioning on October 2014 after the peak current upgrade of Linac from 30 to 50-mA. For higher beam power of MR, we have explored the accelerator options. As one of options, 8-GeV Booster Ring (BR) is also designed for increasing the injection energy of the MR. The increasement of injection energy leads to the reducing a space charge force and the increasing the acceptance clearance from the physical aperture of the MR. In this paper, the realistic injection and extraction system of the BR and the new injection system of the MR for Multi-MW output beam power are also described.

Introducing an 8-GeV booster synchrotron between RCS and MR at J-PARC; One possible option toward a multi-MW output beam power from MR

Now the J-PARC accelerators (Linac, 3GeV RCS, 50GeV MR) are in transition from the initial beam commissioning phase to the final stage aiming for the design output beam power of 1 MW from RCS and 0.75 MW from MR; RCS is to start 1-MW beam tuning from October 2014 after completing the linac upgrade, and MR aims at 0.75 MW within the next 3 years by introducing new main magnet power supplies with the faster cycling time. In view of such current situation, we have started discussions for the future J-PARC accelerator concept toward a Multi-MW output beam power. In this paper, we discuss the feasibility for the introduction of a new 8-GeV booster synchrotron between RCS and MR as one possible option toward a Multi-MW output beam power from MR, in combination with the RCS beam power upgrade from 1 MW to 2 MW.

Optics tuning for beam collimation in the J-PARC 3-50 beam transport line

The J-PARC 3-50BT line is the beam transport line from 3-GeV rapid-cycling synchrotron (RCS) to 50-GeV main ring (MR). The RCS is the high-intensity proton accelerator, where designed beam power is 1 MW, and has the complex source of space charge effect, etc. Therefore, the uncontrolled emittance growth and beam halo increase nonlinearly with the increasing the beam power. Additionally, the physical aperture of MR with 81 $$pi$$ mm mrad is smaller than that of RCS with 486 $$pi$$ mm mrad. Therefore, the 3-50BT line has the collimators in order to remove the tail or halo of the extracted beam from the RCS. The designed collimator aperture is 54 $$pi$$ mm mrad. It is required to measure and optimize the optics parameters in the collimator area for taking full advantage of the beam collimation. Especially, it is very important to make the dispersion functions free in the collimator area and optimize the beta function. This paper will introduce the method of optics measurement and report the result of the measurement and optimization based on the simulation.

In JAEA, various systems associated with the collaboration with industries and universities are enacted. These systems have been operated considering the needs of JAEA's program, industry and academia, resultantly contributed, for example, to basic research and the project development. Activities under these systems contain personal exchanges, the publication of the accomplishments and utilization of those, in R&D concerning geological disposal technology of HLW. These activities have progressed in PNC and JNC, through JAEA. The accomplishments from these systems have contributed to the advancement of the national program on the geological disposal of HLW. In this report, the progress of the R&D under these systems was investigated from the beginning of their operation. The contribution to the R&D on geological disposal technology of HLW was also studied. On the basis of these studies, the future utilization of the systems of the collaboration was also discussed.

Commissioning strategies for J-PARC linac and L3BT

We plan to start the beam commissioning of J-PARC linac with reduced energy of 181 MeV in the end of this year. Detailed commissioning strategies for the linac and the succeeding beam transport line, to which we refer as L3BT or Linac-to-3-GeV-synchrotron Beam Transport, will be presented in this talk. The emphasis will be put on the commissioning procedures for two debuncher cavities and a transverse collimator system located in L3BT, because they are key elements in determining the final beam quality at the injection point to the succeeding 3-GeV synchrotron. The unique design and features of the collimator system are also presented.

Progress of R&D on geological disposal of high-level radioactive waste (HLW) in Japan

Final disposal of high-level radioactive waste is essential issue to utilize nuclear energy. JNC has promoted the research and development on disposal technology to contribute to the implementation and safety regulation in the implementation phase after the legislation of the Act on final disposal. The field of the R&D covers geological environment, engineering of geological disposal and performance assessment. As to the two underground laboratories (URLs), surface-based investigations have been carried out and the constructions of both have already started. On the basis of these investigations, geologic environmental models have been developed. The study on natural phenomena such as volcanism and faulting has been conducted. In the above ground research facilities, the development of advanced models, databases for the long-term evolution of the near-field and engineering technologies has been carried out. In terms of safety assessment methodologies, development of relevant databases and advanced safety assessment models and techniques has been carried out. The H17 report will be published in autumn 2005 for the studies conducted in the surface-based investigation phase at the URLs.

Design of thick septa magnets based on 3D field calculation for the 3 GeV rapid cycling synchrotron of J-PARC

Thick septa are used in the injection and extraction section of the 3 GeV rapid cycling synchrotron of the J-PARC. We have been designing seven thick septum magnets, two for injection, two for beam dump and three for extraction, respectively. These septa require low-loss operations. For the mechanical stability they are operated by direct current. The yoke is made of the soft-iron block. We have been designing them by using the three-dimensional magnet static field calculation code, TOSCA. In this presentation, we discuss about magnetic field flatness in the gap and effects of the leakage fields in the synchrotron.

Installation of beam monitor sensors in the LINAC section of J-PARC

In the LINAC section of J-PARC, we have several type of sensors of monitor, i.e, Beam Position Monitor, Beam Profile Monitor, Beam Size Monitor, Current Monitor, Beam Phase Monitor, Beam Loss Monitor. Those sensors are being installed currently. The procedures, remarks during the installation, status are described in this paper. As an examle, the beam postion monitors are one of sensors which are taken cared intensively for their positioning on their housing quadrupole magnet, then our cares during their installation are described.
