The spallation and fragmentation reactions of $$^{136}$$Xe induced by proton, deuteron and carbon at 168 MeV/nucleon were studied at RIKEN Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory via the inverse kinematics technique. The cross sections of the lighter products are larger in the carbon-induced reactions due to the higher total kinetic energy of carbon. The energy dependence was investigated by comparing the newly obtained data with previous results obtained at higher reaction energies. The experimental data were compared with the results of SPACS, EPAX, PHITS and DEURACS calculations. These data serve as benchmarks for the model calculations.

Searching for effective pathways for the production of proton- and neutron-rich isotopes through an optimal combination of reaction mechanism and energy is one of the main driving forces behind experimental and theoretical nuclear reaction studies as well as for practical applications in nuclear transmutation of radioactive waste. We report on a study on incomplete fusion induced by deuteron, which contains one proton and one neutron with a weak binding energy and is easily broken up. This reaction study was achieved by measuring directly the cross sections for both proton and deuteron for $$^{107}$$Pd at 50 MeV/u via inverse kinematics technique. The results provide direct experimental evidence for the onset of a cross-section enhancement at high energy, indicating the potential of incomplete fusion induced by loosely-bound nuclei for creating proton-rich isotopes and nuclear transmutation of radioactive waste.

Vacuum operation test for optical window protective shutters of JT-60SA diagnostic port-plugs

Shutters will be installed in front of vacuum windows of some diagnostics in JT-60SA to avoid deposition of impurity onto the vacuum window during wall cleaning and plasma conditioning. Two types of shutter systems had been designed. One has a light shutter (0.5 kg) with rotary motion in vacuum. Another has a heavy shutter (3 kg) with vertical motion in vacuum. For the both types, malfunction due to increase of friction coefficients of the sliding parts in vacuum is concerned. In the present paper, Durability, abrasion and friction coefficient of the sliding parts has been investigated and the shutter designs have been validated. The light shutter with rotary motion successfully rotated required times (4000 times), and the design was validated. On the other hand, for the heavy shutter with vertical motion, the test could not be carried out due to the large friction of the sliding parts. This result suggests that we should change the material of the sliding parts to reduce the friction or change the design from the sliding structure to other ones such as a structure using pulleys and bearings. In the test of the heavy shutter with vertical motion, the friction coefficient increased from 1.3 to 4.5 in the vacuum chamber and from 0.4 to 2.5 in the air.

An event, in which one of WRMs were disabled to detect the neutron flux in the reactor core, occurred during the period of reactor shut down of HTTR in March, 2010. The actual life time of WRM was unexpectedly shorter than the past developed life time. Investigation of the cause of the outage of WRM toward the recovery of the life time up to the developed life is one of the issues to develop the technology basis of High Temperature Gas cooled Reactor (HTGR). Then, a post irradiation examination was planned to specify the damaged part causing the event in the WRM was also planned. For the investigation, the X-ray computed tomography scanner in Fuels Monitoring Facility (FMF). This report describes the preliminary investigation on the cause of outage of the WRM. The results of study for transportation method of the irradiated WRM from HTTR to FMF is also reported with the record to complete the transport operation.

Performance analysis of fusion nuclear-data benchmark experiments for light to heavy materials in MeV energy region with a neutron spectrum shifter

Nuclear data are indispensable for development of fusion reactor candidate materials. However, benchmarking of the nuclear data in MeV energy region is not sufficient even now. In the present study, benchmark performance in the MeV energy region was investigated theoretically in case of experiments by using a 14MeV neutron source. We carried out a systematical analysis for light to heavy materials. As a result, the benchmark performance for neutron spectrum was confirmed to be acceptable, while for $$gamma$$-ray it was not sufficient. This indicates it was effective to use a spectrum shifter. As a shifter beryllium had the best performance. Moreover, it was preliminarily examined whether it is really acceptable that only the spectrum before last collision is considered in the benchmark performance analysis. It was pointed out that not only the last collision but also more previous collisions should be taken into account equally in the benchmark performance analysis.

Future synchrotron light source using a 5-GeV energy recovery linac (ERL) is under proposal by our Japanese collaboration team, and we are conducting R&D efforts for that. We are developing high-brightness DC photocathode guns, two types of cryomodules for both injector and main superconducting (SC) linacs, and 1.3 GHz high CW-power RF sources. We are also constructing the Compact ERL (cERL) for demonstrating the recirculation of low-emittance, high-current beams using above-mentioned critical technologies.

Zero-field muon spin relaxation was measured for organic antiferromagnet $$beta$$'-(BEDT-TTF)$$_2$$ICl$$_2$$ under high pressure of up to 1.37 GPa. Neel temperature, which is 22 K at ambient pressure, increases with increasing pressure and becomes approximately 48 K at 1.37 GPa. Muon precession frequency at 1.37 GPa, becomes about 5 times larger than that at ambient pressure.
