Studies on the suppression of the reactivity of sodium itself have been performed on the basis of the concept of suspended nanoparticles in liquid sodium (sodium nanofluid). According to the experimental and theoretical results of studies for sodium nanofluid, velocity and heat of sodium nanofluid-water reaction are lower than those of the pure sodium-water reaction. The analytical model for the peak temperature of a sodium nanofluid-water reaction jet has been developed in consideration of these suppression effects by the authors. In this paper, the prediction method for mitigation effects for a damage of adjacent tubes in a steam generator tube rupture (SGTR) accidents is arranged by applying this analytical model for the peak temperature of the reaction jet. On the assumption that the sodium nanofluid is used for the secondary coolant of sodium-cooled fast reactor (SFR), mitigation effects under the design-base accident (DBA) condition and the design-extension condition (DEC) of SGTR are estimated by using this method. As a result, there is a possibility to reduce the number of damaged tubes and to suppress the pressure generated by SGTR accidents by using sodium nanofluid in the secondary coolant.

Times Cited Count:12 Percentile:74.83(Nuclear Science & Technology)The influences of pH and the concentrations of Eu and NaNO on the sorption of Eu to Na-montmorillonite were investigated through batch sorption measurements and time-resolved laser fluorescence spectroscopy (TRLFS). The pH had a little effect on the distribution coefficients (Kd) in 0.01 M NaNO, whereas the Kd strongly depended on pH at 1 M NaNO. A cation exchange model combined with a one-site non-electrostatic surface complexation model was successfully applied to the measured Kd. The TRLFS spectra of Eu sorbed were processed by parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC), which corresponded to one outer-sphere (factor A) and two inner-sphere (factor B and C) complexes. It turned out that factors A and B correspond to Eu sorbed by ion exchange sites and inner-sphere complexation with hydroxyl groups of the edge faces, respectively. Factor C became dominant at relatively high pH and ionic strength and likely correspond to the precipitation of Eu(OH) on the surface.

Times Cited Count:19 Percentile:78.38(Nuclear Science & Technology)For safe storage of zeolite wastes generated by treatment of radioactive saline water at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station, properties of the Herschelite adsorbent were studied and its adsorption vessel was evaluated for hydrogen production and corrosion. Hydrogen production depends on its water level and dissolved species because hydrogen is oxidized by radicals in water. It is possible to evaluate hydrogen production rate in Herschelite submerged in seawater or pure water by taking into account of the depth effect of the water. The reference vessel of decay heat 504 W with or without residual pure water was evaluated for the hydrogen concentration by thermal hydraulic analysis using obtained fundamental properties. Maximum hydrogen concentration was below the lower explosive limit (4 %). The steady-state corrosion potential of a stainless steel 316L increased with absorbed dose rate but its increase was repressed by the presence of Herschelite. At 750 Gy/h and 60C which were values evaluated at the bottom of the vessel of 504 W, the localized corrosion of SUS316L contacted with Herschelite would not immediately occur under 20,000 ppm of Cl concentration.

The AVF cyclotron was operated from May 9th in fiscal 2011 and all the planned experiments on April were cancelled due to scheduled blackouts originated from the Great East Japan Earthquake. The total operation time amounted to 3,038.4 hours. The extended operation from Friday evening to Saturday evening was carried out eight times in order to supply the cancellation on April. The regular yearly overhaul and maintenance were carried out.

Here we extend these studies to two particle correlations where one particle is an electron from the decay of a heavy flavor meson and the other is a charged hadron from either the decay of the heavy meson or from jet fragmentation. These measurements provide more detailed information about the interaction between heavy quarks and the quark-gluon matter. We find the away-side-jet shape and yield to be modified in Au+Au collisions compared to collisions.

We have evaluated the crystal structure of the -FeSi films formed with various sputter etching of Si substrate. Ne sputter etching of Si (100) substrate was performed with ion energies of 1, 3, and 10 keV. After each etching, the substrate was annealed at a temperature of 1073 K for 30 min. The -FeSi films of 100 nm in thickness were formed at 973 K with the amount of deposited Fe, 30 nm. X-ray diffraction revealed that these films have polycrystalline -FeSi structure but strong preferential orientation aligned as -FeSi (100) // Si (100). Furthermore, the oriented structure of the film was improved by lowering the incident energy of Ne.

A single-ion hitting technique using a 260 MeV Ne microbeam is being developed at the JAERI AVF cyclotron facility for biofunction elucidation. Production of a microbeam with a spot size of one micro-meter in diameter requires reducing the energy spread of the beam to 0.02 % to minimize an effect of chromatic aberrations in focusing lenses. The typical energy spread of the cyclotron beam is around 0.1 % in an ordinary acceleration mode using a sinusoidal voltage waveform. The energy spread can be reduced by superimposing the fifth-harmonic voltage waveform on the fundamental one to generate a flattop waveform for uniform energy gain. We have designed an additional coaxial cavity to generate the fifth-harmonic voltage, coupled to the main resonator of one-fourth wavelength coaxial type. In a power test we successfully observed the fifth-harmonic voltage waveform by picking up an acceleration voltage signal.

The flat-topping of the energy gain distribution using the fifth-harmonics has the advantages of minimizing an amplifier power, reducing power dissipation in a resonator and increasing the energy gain per turn. The flat-top acceleration system of the JAERI AVF cyclotron was designed to reduce the energy spread to 0.02 , required for microbeam production. Tolerable fluctuations of acceleration voltages and the magnetic excitation were 2.010 for the fundamental voltage, 1.010 for the fifth-harmonic voltage, and 1.910 for the magnetic field. In order to enhance compactness of the flat-topping cavity and to make a substantial saving of the amplifier power, optimum geometric parameters of the flat-topping cavity were determined by a cold model test and a calculation using the MAFIA code.
