Uchino, Seiko*; Narita, Hirokazu*; Kita, Keisuke*; Suzuki, Hideya*; Matsumura, Tatsuro; Naganawa, Hirochika*; Sakaguchi, Koichi*; Oto, Keisuke*

Solvent Extraction Research and Development, Japan, 30(1), p.39 - 46, 2023/00

The extraction of trivalent rare earth ions (RE$$^{3+}$$) from HNO$$_{3}$$ solution using a triamide amine, tris(N,N-di-2-ethylhexyl-ethylamide)amine (DEHTAA), was conducted, and the extraction mechanism was estimated from extraction behavior of HNO$$_{3}$$ and RE$$^{3+}$$ and the relationship between atomic number and extraction percentages (E%) for RE$$^{3+}$$. A DEHTAA molecule dominantly formed a DEHTAA HNO$$_{3}$$ at 1.0 M HNO$$_{3}$$ and a DEHTAA(HNO$$_{3}$$)$$_{2}$$ at 6.0 M HNO$$_{3}$$ in the acid-equilibrated organic phase. This would provide the unique dependence of E% for the light RE$$^{3+}$$ on the HNO$$_{3}$$ concentration, in which the E% value had a minimum and maximum at $$sim$$0.5 M and $$sim$$2 M HNO$$_{3}$$, respectively. The results of the slope analyses for the distribution ratios for RE$$^{3+}$$ suggested that the dominant RE$$^{3+}$$ complex was RE(NO$$_{3}$$)$$_{3}$$DEHTAA(DEHTAA HNO$$_{3}$$) at 1.0 M HNO$$_{3}$$. The E% for RE$$^{3+}$$ decreased from La$$^{3+}$$ to Lu$$^{3+}$$ at 1.0 M HNO$$_{3}$$; on the other hand, those increased from La$$^{3+}$$ to Nd$$^{3+}$$ at 0.25 M and from La$$^{3+}$$ to Sm$$^{3+}$$ and 6.0 M HNO$$_{3}$$.

Here we report observations of Ryugu's subsurface material by the Near-Infrared Spectrometer (NIRS3) on the Hayabusa2 spacecraft. Reflectance spectra of excavated material exhibit a hydroxyl (OH) absorption feature that is slightly stronger and peak-shifted compared with that observed for the surface, indicating that space weathering and/or radiative heating have caused subtle spectral changes in the uppermost surface. However, the strength and shape of the OH feature still suggests that the subsurface material experienced heating above 300 $$^{circ}$$C, similar to the surface. In contrast, thermophysical modeling indicates that radiative heating does not increase the temperature above 200 $$^{circ}$$C at the estimated excavation depth of 1 m, even if the semimajor axis is reduced to 0.344 au. This supports the hypothesis that primary thermal alteration occurred due to radiogenic and/or impact heating on Ryugu's parent body.

We have developed ${it spatiotemporal}$ measurement and analysis techniques in X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. To begin with, time-division depth profiles of gate stacked film interfaces have been achieved by NAP-HARPES (Near Ambient Pressure Hard X-ray Angle-Resolved Photo Emission Spectroscopy) data. We then have promoted our methods to quickly perform peak fittings and depth profiling from time-division ARPES data, which enables us to realize 4D-XPS analysis. It is found that the traditional maximum entropy method (MEM) combined with Jackknife averaging of sparse modeling in NAP-HARPES data is effective to perform dynamic measurement of depth profiles with high precision.

Zr separation from high-level liquid waste with a novel hydroxyacetoamide type extractant

Morita, Keisuke; Suzuki, Hideya; Matsumura, Tatsuro; Takahashi, Yuya*; Omori, Takashi*; Kaneko, Masaaki*; Asano, Kazuhito*

Proceedings of International Nuclear Fuel Cycle Conference / Light Water Reactor Fuel Performance Conference (Global/Top Fuel 2019) (USB Flash Drive), p.464 - 468, 2019/09

High level liquid waste (HLLW) contains several radionuclides with half-lives longer than 10$$^{6}$$ year. For reduce environmental burden of waste disposal, minor actinoids and long-lived fission products will to be partitioned and transmuted. JAEA and Toshiba developed process for recovering Se, Zr, Pd and Cs from HLLW. Solvent extraction for Zr with novel extractant, ${it N,N}$-didodecyl-2-hydroxyacetoamide (HAA) was detailed. The HAA system showed high selectivity for Zr, as indicated by the extraction order of Zr $$>$$ Mo $$>$$ Pd $$>$$ Ag $$approx$$ Sb $$>$$ Sn $$>$$ Lns $$>$$ Fe. The extracted species was determined as Zr(HAA)$$_{3}$$(NO$$_{3}$$)$$_{4}$$(HNO$$_{3}$$)$$_{x}$$. A continuous countercurrent extraction with HAA was applied to a simulated, concentrated HLLW after Pd, Se, and Cs removal, where the quantitative extraction of Zr and Mo was effectively demonstrated.

The nuclear structure of the $$^{76}$$Ni nucleus was investigated by ($$p$$,$$2p$$) reaction using a NaI(Tl) array to detect the deexciting prompt $$gamma$$ rays. A new transition with an energy of 2227 keV was identified by $$gamma gamma$$ and $$gamma gamma gamma$$ coincidences. Our shell-model calculations using the Lenzi, Nowacki, Poves, and Sieja interaction produced good candidates for the experimental proton hole states in the observed energy region, and the theoretical cross sections showed good agreement with the experimental values. Although we could not assign all the experimental states to the theoretical ones unambiguously, the results are consistent with a reasonably large Z = 28 shell gap for nickel isotopes in accordance with previous studies.

Extraction and separation of Se, Zr, Pd, and Cs including long-lived radionuclides

Sasaki, Yuji; Morita, Keisuke; Suzuki, Shinichi; Shiwaku, Hideaki; Ito, Keisuke; Takahashi, Yuya*; Kaneko, Masaaki*

Solvent Extraction Research and Development, Japan, 24(2), p.113 - 122, 2017/06

The solvent extraction of Se, Zr, Pd, and Cs from nitric acid into 1-octanol (OC) and dodecane has been performed. These elements include long-lived radionuclides in spent nuclear fuels, so a simple separation method is indispensable for the development of the treatment of high-level liquid radioactive waste. It was found that Se can be extracted using phenylenediamine, Zr can be extracted using tetraoctyl diglycolamide and di-2-ethylhexyl phosphoric acid, and Pd can be extracted using (methylimino)bis(dioctylacetamide) and hexaoctylnitrilotriacetamide. These elements can be recovered in over 90% yield by these extractants from nitric acid into OC. A distribution ratio of Cs of greater than 1 can be obtained using di-t-butyldibenzo-18-crown-6. It is clear that 90% recovery of Cs can be achieved using an extraction solvent with ten times the volume of the aqueous phase.

This study provides a method of safety assessment for the geological disposal of HLW to evaluate the effects of uplift and erosion which are widespread phenomena identified on regional and global scales, and are more or less difficult to avoid in Japan. This method enables to deal with different uplift rate and erosion rate, and to evaluate repository depth, the time required for a repository to reach the weathered zone and surface of the ground, and the number of waste packages eroded as a function of time by using a landform evolution model. Based on trial analysis, the result shows that the maximum dose in the Base Case (uplift rate: 0.3 mm/y) is less than the targeted criterion suggested by the international organization even if the repository reaches the ground surface. Furthermore, the diversifying effect on timing the waste packages to reach to weathered zone due to heterogeneity on altitude of bottom of weathered zone reduces one order magnitude of result of the existed dose assessment. The new method is applicable to evaluate safety of geological disposal based on realistic phenomena of uplift and erosion and to quantify a safety margin and robustness of the disposal system.

To understand the adsorption properties of styrene-divinylbenzene copolymer functionalized with ${it N,N,N}$-trimethylglycine, AMP03, the adsorption behaviors for platinoid ions (Ru(III), Rh(III), and Pd(II)) were examined. Furthermore, we performed adsorption experiments using sample solutions with adding triethylamine, thiourea, and ${it N,N,N}$-trimethylglycine. Based on the adsorption data obtained in this study, we performed chromatographic experiments. The results indicated that all platinoid ions in the feed solution completely adsorbed on AMP03, and almost 80% of the adsorbed platinoid ions were recovered. These results show that AMP03 has the potential to recover Ru(III), Rh(III), and Pd(II) from high-level liquid waste.

In a previous study, we found that AMP03 adsorbs Rh(III) from the HNO$$_{3}$$ solution with pH = 1.7 - 2.2. In this study, to understand the Rh(III) adsorption properties of AMP03 and clarify conditions for efficient recovery, we investigated the adsorption behaviors of Rh(III) from the HNO$$_{3}$$ solution. As a result, it was found that Rh(III) is effectively adsorbed from aqueous solution containing low H$$^{+}$$ and high NO$$_{3}$$$$^{-}$$ concentration. Considering the adsorption mechanism of Rh(III), we found that Rh$$^{3+}$$ in aqueous solution is adsorbed with two betaine groups in AMP03 and three NO$$_{3}$$$$^{-}$$.

The novel tridentate extractant including soft donor has developed and examined. The extractant, tetraoctyl-thiodiglycolamide (S-DGA), is analogous structure to tetraoctyl-diglycolamide (TODGA), but with sulfur donor instead of ether oxygen of TODGA. S-DGA has unique property to extract silver from acidic solutions to n-dodecane with relatively high D values. We investigated the extraction behavior of Ag in various acids, HNO$$_{3}$$, H$$_{2}$$SO$$_{4}$$, and HClO$$_{4}$$.

Nihon Genshiryoku Gakkai Wabun Rombunshi, 14(3), p.202 - 212, 2015/09

We have been developing the new partitioning method of high-level radioactive waste by single-cycle extraction process. This process is composed of extraction of actinides (An) and fission products (FP, e.g., Pd, Ru, Mo and Tc), and mutual separation by back-extraction. The extractant employed in this process is required to extract soft, hard acid metals and oxonium anions simultaneously. The NTAamide (hexaoctyl-nitrilotriacetamide) is one of the candidate extractants. After extraction of An and FP, the mutual separation by back-extraction should be set up. Pd and Ru extracted by NTAamide can be back-extracted by complexing agents such as thiourea, systeine, diethylenetriamine, and trisaminoethylamine, and the back-extraction of Mo can be performed by methylimino-diethylacetamide (MIDEA), NTAamide(C2) and iminodimethylphosphoric acid, and Re can be done by aqueous phase with high pH.

Maebara, Sunao; Sukegawa, Keiichi*; Tadano, Shuya*; Kasugai, Atsushi; Suzuki, Hiromitsu; Abe, Kazuhiko*; Oku, Ryuji*; Sugimoto, Masayoshi

Proceedings of 12th Annual Meeting of Particle Accelerator Society of Japan (Internet), p.1140 - 1142, 2015/09

For the IFMIF/EVEDA accelerator prototype RFQ linac, the operation frequency of 175MHz was selected to accelerate a large current of 125mA. The driving RF power of 1.28MW by 8 RF input couplers has to be injected to the RFQ cavity for CW operation mode. For each RF input coupler, nominal RF power of 160kW and maximum transmitted RF power of 200kW are required. For this purpose, an RF input coupler with cooling functions was designed, based on a 6 1/8 inch co-axial waveguide, and the RF coupler was manufactured by way of trial. For the trial RF coupler, high-power tests using a high voltage standing wave on a high-Q load circuit wave were carried out, and a 200kW-14 sec CW operation were performed after four days of RF aging. No RF contact defects, unnecessary low-Q value and extraordinary outgassing were observed. This report describes the high-power tests of the RF input coupler.

Sasaki, Yuji; Tsubata, Yasuhiro; Shirasu, Noriko; Morita, Keisuke; Suzuki, Tomoya

Proceedings of 21st International Conference & Exhibition; Nuclear Fuel Cycle for a Low-Carbon Future (GLOBAL 2015) (USB Flash Drive), p.1653 - 1656, 2015/09

The concept for the new partitioning method of high-level radioactive waste (HLW) by single-cycle extraction process has been investigated. This process is based on extraction of actinides (An) and fission products (FP), and mutual separation by reverse extraction. Solo extractant and several stripping reagents will be utilized in this process. The extractant employed in this process is required to extract soft (platinum metals), hard acid metals(An), and oxonium anions (Mo, Tc) simultaneously. NTAamide is one of the candidate extractants. After extraction of An and FP by NTAamide(C8), the mutual separation among these metals by reverse extraction will be followed using the suitable water-miscible reagents. The extraction of An and FP, and the masking effect by some water-miscible reagents has been studied.

A Study on adsorption properties of ion-exchange resins bearing ${it N,N,N}$-trimethylglycine to Ru(III), Rh(III) and Pd(II) for developing separation techniques from high-level liquid waste

Suzuki, Tomoya; Shimazaki, Shoma*; Morita, Keisuke; Sasaki, Yuji; Ozawa, Masaki*; Matsumura, Tatsuro

Proceedings of 21st International Conference & Exhibition; Nuclear Fuel Cycle for a Low-Carbon Future (GLOBAL 2015) (USB Flash Drive), p.1539 - 1543, 2015/09

To understand the adsorption behaviors of ion-exchange resin bearing ${it N,N,N}$-trimethylglycine groups (AMP03), adsorption experiments using HNO$$_{3}$$ solutions containing Ru(III), Rh(III), and Pd(II) have been performed. AMP03 strongly adsorbed Pd(II), and Ru(III) and Rh(III) were moderately adsorbed. To control the adsorption abilities of AMP03 for the Ru(III), Rh(III) and Pd(II), adsorption experiments using sample solutions with added thiourea (TU), triethylamine (TEA), and betaine anhydrous were performed. The adsorption abilities for Ru(III) and Rh(III) greatly increased with the addition of TEA, whereas the ability to adsorb Pd(II) was not significantly affected. The addition of TU or betaine anhydrous remarkably decreased the adsorption ability for Pd(II), and contrastingly slight changes in the abilities to adsorb Ru and Rh were also observed. These results show that AMP03 has a significant potential for separation of platinoid elements from HNO$$_{3}$$ solution.

Transactions of the 23rd International Conference on Structural Mechanics in Reactor Technology (SMiRT-23) (USB Flash Drive), 10 Pages, 2015/08

The digital shaking table is introduced to carry out numerical experiments for the so called STRUCTURE of a petroleum plant. In numerical experiments, STRUCTURE was precisely modelled as it is designed and meshed into fine finite elements. The components of STRUCTURE were meshed one by one, and the code of a finite element analysis for structure of assembly gathered every meshed components to run time domain response analysis. Four waves are applied to the analysis to determine its behaviour. Four waves are namely as El Centro, Taft, Hachinohe, and Geiyo. The results of experiments are discussed by comparing accumulating data in the past. It is concluded to reconfirm the methodology of gathering meshed components and a finite element analysis for structure of assembly with the STRUCTURE.

The combustible and flame-retardant radioactive wastes generated as a result of the research activities in Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) are incinerating to reduce their volume. The incinerated ash is planned to be solidified using cement for disposal. Since the properties of ashes generated in each institute of JAEA are varied with the type of incinerator and the wastes to be incinerated, it is necessary to do fundamental solidification tests in each institute to decide operating conditions of the planning cement solidification facility. It is important to standardize evaluating methods of cement and solidified waste because some characters depend on measuring method. This user's guide have been prepared how to decide the cement solidifying conditions of ash to design the cement solidification facility in JAEA. Requirements on the regulations of solidified radioactive waste have been examined and seven technical criteria, e.g. compressive strength, fluidity, have been selected as characters to be evaluated. Some empirical notes about selection of cement, admixtures, procedure on making a test piece, evaluation of expanding, compressive strength, solubility have been described. The strategy of tests and tips for finding optimized solidification condition has been summarized. Finally the example of optimized conditions satisfied the requirements and some problems to be solved have been described.

Internal stress distribution for generating closure domains occurring in laser-irradiated Fe-3%Si(110) steels was investigated using high-energy X-ray analysis and domain theory based on the variational principle. The measured triaxial stresses inside the specimen were compressive and the stress in the rolling direction became more dominant than stresses in the other directions. The calculations based on the variational principle of magnetic energy for closure domains showed that the measured triaxial stresses made the closure domains more stable than the basic domain without closure domains. The experimental and calculation results reveal that the laser-introduced internal stresses result in the occurrence of the closure domains.
