Fugen Nuclear Power Station was shut down and now is under decommissioning. Many radioactivity concentration data of dismantled materials have to be accumulated to calculate the scaling factors of radioactive wastes and to verify that the cleared dismantled materials conform to the clearance levels. A simple and rapid radioactivity determination method for radioactive waste samples was developed by Department of Decommissioning and Waste Management. For its demonstration, the simple and rapid radioactivity determination method was applied to metal samples, which were taken from dismantled pipes in contact with heavy water or carbon dioxide gas of Fugen. This report summarizes the radioactivity data obtained from the analysis of those samples.

A simple and rapid method with low radiation exposure risk was developed for the determination of neodymium in spent nuclear fuel by CE with LIF detection using a fluorescent ligand having a macrocyclic hexadentate polyaminocarboxylate structure. The concentration of Nd(III) in a spent nuclear fuel sample was determined with no interference from various matrix elements, including lanthanides and uranium (at a 200-fold excess), with 92 $$pm$$ 3% recovery. This is due to method's high resolution based on establishing a ternary complex equilibrium during migration in which the hydroxyl ion plays an auxiliary role.

A rapid and high-sensitive detection method of total concentration of Nd ion in a spent nuclear fuel sample is desirable since precise quantification of total Nd is useful as indicator of burnup. In this work, a capillary electrophoresis-laser-induced fluorescent detection method (CE-LIF) was proposed for analysis of total Nd in the spent fuel sample solution, employing a newly synthesized metal fluorescent probe with a fluorescein and a macrocylic hexadentate chelating group, FTC-ABNOTA, for lanthanide (Ln) ions. The mutual separation among the Ln-FTC-ABNOTA complexes was achieved by pH control providing dynamic ternary complexation with hydroxide ions. In this method, high resolution of Nd from other Ln ions with high resolution of 1.3-1.9 and a very low detection limit of 3.2 ppt were successfully obtained. A simulated spent fuel sample containing various metal ions was examined, so that a good quantification result with 99.3% recovery was obtained even with large excess of U.

Performance evaluation of multiple gamma-ray detection instrument by non-destructive measurement of radioactive waste sample

A nondestructive measurement of gamma-ray emitting nuclides has been studied and Multiple gamma-ray Detection Instrument is newly constructed with 4 detection units consisting of Ge and BGO detectors. Compton scattering was decreased by the combination of Ge and BGO detectors. This instrument was applied to the detection of interested nuclides in radioactive waste sample, which contains significant amount of Co-60, and detection limit of the interested gamma-ray emitting nuclides were improved by a factor of 4 to 12 times than single gamma-ray spectrometer. As for Nb-94, the radioactivity determined from measurements using Multiple gamma-ray Detection Instrument in this sample was agreed with that determined by radiochemical analysis within 15%. It was confirmed that the instrument are useful for radioactivity determination of gamma-ray emitting nuclides in radioactive waste.

Analytical methods have been developed for simple and rapid determination of radioactive nuclides, which are selected as important nuclides for safety assessment of disposal of wastes generated from research facilities. We advanced the development of a high-efficiency non-destructive measurement technique for $$gamma$$-ray emitting nuclides, simple and rapid methods for pretreatment of hard-to dissolve samples and subsequent radiochemical separations, and rapid determination methods for long-lived nuclides. In order to establish a system to analyze the important nuclides in various kinds of samples, actual radioactive wastes such as concentrated liquid waste, activated concrete, and metal pipes, were analyzed by the present method. The results showed that the present method was well suited for a rapid and simple determination of low-level radioactive wastes generated from research facilities.

Capillary electrophoresis with laser-induced fluorescent detection method using highly emissive probes for analysis of actinides in radioactive wastes

Actinides are important nuclides for the analysis of radioactive wastes from nuclear fuel cycle facilities. In order to achieve simple and rapid analysis of actinides, capillary electrophoresis-laser-induced fluorescent detection method (CE-LIF) is one of the potential candidates. In this study, new emissive probes of actinide ions suitable for CE-LIF were developed for the first time. The detection and separation of americium and neptunium ions as model nuclides were examined using several new emissive complexing probes, each of which possessed a fluorophore and a different chelating moiety. Using acyclic and macrocyclic multidentate probes, the highly sensitive fluorescent detection of Am and Np was successfully achieved. The results suggests that the probe with an acyclic hexadentate chelating moiety is suitable for detection and separation of Am and Np. The detection limit of mid-ppt levels was determined.

The graded energy deposition of heavy ion beam irradiation to polymeric materials was utilized to synthesize a novel proton exchange membrane (PEM) with the graded density of sulfonic acid groups toward the thickness direction. Stacked Poly(tetrafluoroethylene-co-hexafluoropropylene) (FEP) films were irradiated by Xe$$^{54+}$$ ion beam with the energy of 6 MeV/u under a vacuum condition. Irradiated films were grafted with styrene monomer and then sulfonated. The membrane electrode assembly (MEA) fabricated by the function graded PEM showed improved fuel cell performance in terms of voltage stability. It was expected that the function-graded PEM could control the graded concentration of sulfonic acid groups in PEM.

In order to dissolve radioactive ash (fly ash and bottom ash) and cement-solidified product of radioactive liquid wastes, a dissolution method using microwave heating devices was developed. In present method, most metal elements in samples were extracted with HCl and HNO$$_{3}$$ to sample solution and a precipitate with silica as the main ingredient was decomposed with HF and HNO$$_{3}$$. As a result, fluoride residue was sufficiently reduced and more than 99% of radionuclides were recovered to sample solution. The ash and cement-solidified product samples were successfully dissolved in a shorter time as compared with a conventional method by external heating.

Microfabrication of biodegradable polymers such as poly(butylene succinate-${it co}$-adipate) (PBSA) and poly($$varepsilon$$-caprolactone) (PCL) were demonstrated using focused ion beam (FIB) with maskless direct etching. As the result, the micro structures of PBSA and PCL were obtained. The etching depth of both PBSA and PCL were increased with increasing FIB fluence, and the etching rates were estimated to be about 1.3 $$times$$ 10$$^{-18}$$ $$mu$$m/(ions cm$$^{-2}$$) and 1.2 $$times$$ 10$$^{-18}$$ $$mu$$m/(ions cm$$^{-2}$$), respectively. Moreover, very thin films of PBSA and PCL were made by spin-coating method. The thicknesses of the spin-coated samples were about 200 nm, and the surface roughness was less than 10 nm (RMS). The fine structures such as micro-gear of PBSA and PCL were obtained without solid debris. The line width of the fabricated structure was about 250 nm.

Analysis of cement solidified product and ash samples and preparation of a reference material

Simple and rapid analytical methods for radionuclides in low-level radioactive waste have been developed by the present authors. The methods were applied to simulated solidified products and actual metal wastes to confirm their usefulness. The results were summarized as analytical guide lines. In the present work, cement solidified products and ash wastes were analyzed followed by the analytical guide lines and subjects were picked up and improved for the application of the analytical guide lines to these wastes. Pulverization and homogenization methods for ash wastes were improved to prevent a contamination since the radioactivity concentrations of the ash wastes were relatively high. Pre-treatment method was altered for the ash wastes and cement solidified products taking account for their high composition of Ca. Newly, an analytical method was also developed to measure $$^{129}$$I with a dynamic reaction cell inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer. In the analytical test based on the guide lines, $$gamma$$-ray emitting nuclides, $$^{60}$$CoCo and $$^{137}$$CoCs, were measured to estimate the radioactivity of the other alpha and $$beta$$-ray emitting nuclides. The radionuclides assumed detectable, $$^{3}$$H,$$^{14}$$C,$$^{36}$$Cl,$$^{63}$$Ni,$$^{90}$$Sr, and $$alpha$$-ray emitting nuclides, were analyzed with the analytical guide lines and their applicability for ash wastes and cement solidified products were confirmed.

We examined the role of root cap and elongation zone cells in root hydrotropism using heavy-ion and laser microbeam. Heavy-ion microbeam irradiation of the elongation zone, but not that of the columella cells, significantly and temporary suppressed the development of hydrotropic curvature. However, laser ablation confirmed that columella cells are indispensable for hydrotropism. Systemic heavy-ion broad-beam irradiation suppressed ${it de novo}$ expression of ${it INDOLE ACETIC ACID 5}$ gene, but not ${it MIZU-KUSSEI1}$ gene. Our results indicate that both the root cap and elongation zone have indispensable and functionally distinct roles in root hydrotropism, and that ${it de novo}$ gene expression might be required for hydrotropism in the elongation zone, but not in columella cells.
