Analytical study of the applicability of FeCrAl-ODS cladding for BWR

Takano, Sho*; Kusagaya, Kazuyuki*; Goto, Daisuke*; Sakamoto, Kan*; Yamashita, Shinichiro

Proceedings of 2017 Water Reactor Fuel Performance Meeting (WRFPM 2017) (USB Flash Drive), 10 Pages, 2017/09

We focused on one of accident tolerant fuel (ATF) materials, Oxide Dispersion Strengthened Fe-Cr-Al Steel (FeCrAl-ODS). There is a reasonable prospect that FeCrAl-ODS is applied to BWRs, but relatively high neutron absorption should be compensated. To decrease adverse neutron economic impact, thin FeCrAl-ODS cladding was designed, and we evaluated characteristics of a core into which 9$$times$$9 Advanced BWR (ABWR) bundles with thin FeCrAl-ODS claddings were loaded. Thin FeCrAl-ODS water rods and channel boxes were also applied. We confirmed that FeCrAl-ODS core reactivity was sufficient by increasing enrichment of UO$$_{2}$$ fuel under the limit of 5 wt%. Moreover, some representative FeCrAl-ODS core characteristics were comparable to zircaloy core. We also confirmed that fuel thermal-mechanical behaviors of thin FeCrAl-ODS cladding at normal operation and transient conditions were acceptable. These results led to a conclusion that FeCrAl-ODS was applicable to BWR in the analysis range of this study.

An Ion micro-Beam-Induced Luminescence (micro-IBIL) system was newly developed for the evaluation of the accuracy of proton beam writing on solid diamond surface. Fabrication of buried microstructures in bulk diamond (3.0 mm $$times$$ 3.0 mm $$times$$ 0.5 mm IIa single-crystal diamond) with a scanning microbeam was performed with using scanning focused 3 MeV proton microbeam. Photon counts of IBIL from the diamond were continuously observed and the changes were obtained during the process of PBW. An micro-IBIL image at a-band line of diamond crystal was successfully visualized as the PBW pattern on it through the monochromatic photon counting system of IBIL.

The development of the fast single-ion hit system was continued from last year in order to improve the quality of microbeam and single-ion hit at the TIARA cyclotron of the Japan Atomic Energy Agency. The major subjects were reduction of miss hit, no hit on the targeted point by any ions in the single-ion-hit irradiation, and development of a real-time detection system of single-ion hit. A new microbeam of 400 MeV-Fe with a spot diameter of about 4 $$mu$$m was also developed and supplied to an experiment.

JAEA-Review 2010-065, JAEA Takasaki Annual Report 2009, P. 173, 2011/01

Microbeam and single-ion hit of 260 MeV-$$^{20}$$Ne$$^{7+}$$ and/or 520 MeV-$$^{40}$$Ar$$^{14+}$$ were utilized to irradiate living biological cells for study of radiation biology, semiconductor devices for study of radiation effects such as Single Event Upset and polymer films for study of micro-fabrication in fiscal 2009 at the TIARA cyclotron. Although these beams were generally supplied smoothly, we still have technical matters to improve for better beam quality. One of the major subjects is instability of microbeam, and another is miss hit, no ion hit around a targeted point. The paper describes investigation of the causes of those as well as development of new ion beams to be available for microbeam and single-ion hit.

Concept of fast reactor cycle scheme that incorporates a thoria-based minor actinide-containing cermet fuel is given. The present cermet fuel consists of oxide solid solution of Th and minor actinides and Mo inert matrix. It has been proposed as a high-performance device that can enhance minor actinide transmutation in the fast reactor cycle. It is used in an independent small cycle, whereby dedicated cycle process are adopted. Two-steps process for reprocessing of the present cermet fuel was proposed; it consists of pre-removal of Mo-inert matrix and actinide recovery. A preliminary test for pre-removal of Mo-inert matrix using surrogate cermet fuel was carried out. It was done by dissolution in nitric acid at room temperature. Results showed that Mo-inert matrix was largely dissolved, while oxide remained. Burnup characteristics of a fast reactor core loaded with the cermet fuel were investigated by using neutronic calculation codes. It was revealed that a heterogeneous composition of Mo-inert matrix in inner and outer cores could lead to effective transmutation and flattened power density. It was concluded that the present cermet fuel is potentially a promising one as a high-performance transmutation device for the fast reactor.
