Detailed $$gamma$$-ray spectroscopy of the exotic neon isotope $$^{28}$$Ne has been performed using the one-neutron removal reaction from $$^{29}$$Ne. Based on an analysis of parallel momentum distributions, a level scheme with spin-parity assignments has been constructed for $$^{28}$$Ne and the negative-parity states are identified for the first time. The measured partial cross sections and momentum distributions reveal a significant intruder p-wave strength providing evidence of the breakdown of the N = 20 and N = 28 shell gaps. Only a weak, possible f-wave strength was observed to bound final states. Large-scale shell-model calculations with different effective interactions do not reproduce the large p-wave and small f-wave strength observed experimentally, indicating an ongoing challenge for a complete theoretical description of the transition into the island of inversion along the Ne isotopic chain.

An attempt was made to separate and identify hydrogen peaks desorbed from lattice defects formed by plastic-strain in the presence of hydrogen in tempered martensitic steel showing quasi-cleavage fracture using thermal desorption spectroscopy from a low temperature (L-TDS) and positron annihilation spectroscopy (PAS). The L-TDS results made it possible to separate two peaks, namely, that of the original desorption and also that of new desorption. The PAS results revealed that the new desorption obtained by L-TDS corresponded to vacancy-type defects. Hydrogen enhanced vacancy-type defect concentration, approximately 10$$^{-5}$$ order in terms of atomic ratio, formed within 1.5 mm from the fracture surface, These results indicate that the accumulation of excess vacancy-type defects enhanced by hydrogen in the local region can lead to nanovoid nucleation and coalescence in plastic deformation, resulting in quasi-cleavage fracture of tempered martensitic steel.

The air dose rate in an environment contaminated with $$^{134}$$Cs and $$^{137}$$Cs depends on the amount, depth profile and horizontal distribution of these contaminants within the ground. This paper introduces and verifies a tool that models these variables and calculates ambient dose equivalent rates at 1 m above the ground. Good correlation is found between predicted dose rates and dose rates measured with survey meters in Fukushima Prefecture in areas contaminated with radiocesium from the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant accident. Better predictions are obtained by modeling the horizontal distribution of radioactive cesium across an area if multiple soil samples are available, as opposed to assuming a spatially homogeneous contamination distribution. Reductions seen in air dose rates above flat, undisturbed fields in Fukushima Prefecture are consistent with decrement by radioactive decay and downward migration of cesium into soil. Analysis of remediation strategies for farmland soils confirmed that topsoil removal and interchanging a topsoil layer with a subsoil layer result in similar reductions in the air dose rate.

For the safety design in which heat is properly removed from the molten fuel after the core disruptive accident in a sodium-cooled fast reactor, the estimation of the breakup behavior of molten fuel discharged into the coolant like a jet is desired. In order to investigate the influence of viscocity on the jet behavior, we simulated a jet discharged into a coolant using the three-dimensional lattice Boltzmann model for two-phase fluid, and examined the influence of Ohnesorge number and Reynolds number on the jet behavior. As a result, we made clear that it is necessary to consider viscosity of the coolant as well as that of the jet for the estimation of jet behavior.

The prediction of the distribution and fate of radioactive materials eventually deposited at surface in the Fukushima area is one of the main objectives and expected to be achieved in an efficient manner. In order to make such prediction, a number of mathematical models of radioactive contaminants, with particular attention on cesium, on the land and in rivers, lakes, and estuaries in the Fukushima area are developed. Simulation results are examined with the field investigations simultaneously implemented. The basic studies of the adsorption/absorption mechanism of cesium and soils have been performed to shed light on estimating distribution coefficient between dissolved contaminant and particulate contaminant.

The operational experiments of the HTTR would be useful for future high-temperature gas-cooled reactors (HTGRs). Main PID control constants of the HTTR are selected with reasonably damped characteristics and without undershoot or overshoot. For utilization the HTGR as a commercial reactor, it should be demonstrated that the HTGR system can supply stable heat to a heat utilization system for the long-term operation. The control characteristics in the long-term high-temperature operation are evaluated by the result of operation performed in 2010. In addition, from a viewpoint of HTGRs with heat utilization system, a future possibility of the experiments for heat utilization design is examined.

We previously reported that the magnetic state of FeRh can be controlled by irradiation with ion beams. In this paper, we evaluate possibility of magnetic patterning on FeRh thin films using energetic light ion microbeam irradiation with various shapes and dimensions. Proton microbeam irradiation with 2 MeV was performed at JAEA-Takasaki to produce micron-sized magnetic patterns. XMCD-PEEM observation was performed at SPring8 to confirm the synthesized magnetic patterns. As a result, the XMCD-PEEM images of the various micrometer sized patters in FeRh film were observed using 2 MeV H ion beam. The observed bright regions are considered to have ferromagnetic spin orders, in contrast that the gray areas have anti-ferromagnetic spin order. Since the brightness of the PEEM images is strongly correlated with the magnetization of the samples, we reveal that the magnetic state in local regions of the FeRh thin films can be controlled by changing the ion fluences.

In HTTR, in-service operation is conducted through the rise-to power operation with rated operation or high-temperature test operation from achievement of first criticality at 1998. To make practical use HTGR system, it must be demonstrated to supply stable heat to heat utilization system for long-term. In HTTR, high-temperature/parallel-loaded long-term operation had been performed from January 2010. As the result, it was demonstrated to supply stable heat to heat utilization system for 50 days with HTTR, moreover, various long-term operation data were gained. This paper reports the characteristics of the high-temperature long-term operation for HTTR obtained from the operation.

Preliminary study on HTTR tests for development of commercial HTGRs

Preliminary studies on the HTTR (High Temperature engineering Test Reactor) tests were conducted to obtain characteristics and demonstration data which were required to develop commercial HTGRs (high temperature gas-cooled reactors). The tests proposed in this study are as follows: nuclear heat supply characteristics tests, burned core tests, reactivity insertion tests, safety demonstration tests, fuel characteristics tests, annular core tests, fuel failure tests, tritium measurement tests, and health confirmation tests of high temperature equipments. Requirements for a development of commercial HTGRs and confirmation methods of the requirements by the HTTR tests were summarized. Preliminary analyses were performed for the burned core test and the safety demonstration test to obtain prediction data, which is compared with experimental data. Additionally, a feasibility analysis was performed on four types annular cores, which is composed of the HTTR's fresh fuels, from the point of view of shutdown margin and excess reactivity.

Current status and future plan of JMTR Hot Laboratory

The JMTR-HL was founded to examine the objects mainly irradiated in the JMTR in 1971. The JMTR-HL has an advantage that the hot cell is connected with the reactor vessel of the JMTR by a canal. Hence it is easy to transport irradiated radioactive capsules and specimens through the canal. Since 1971, about 2,400 irradiated capsules have been treated in the JMTR-HL and various PIEs have been widely performed there. In recent years, several new techniques, e.g., an in-cell IASCC test, a scanning-electron microscope (SEM) / electron-back scattering-diffraction pattern (EBSD) observation, were added to the conventional PIEs. In addition, the JMTR-HL had contributed to realize an in-pile IASCC test program at the JMTR through the development of a TIG welding technique by remote-handling with manipulators in the hot cell for re-assembling of capsules. A modification of the facility to treat high burn-up fuels, up to about 100 GWD/t, is planned at the JMTR-HL now.
