High-pressure responses of the O-D$$cdotcdotcdot$$F hydrogen bonds in deuterated magnesium hydroxyfluoride were investigated using neutron powder diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. The Rietveld analysis at ambient conditions revealed a chemical formula of Mg(OD)$$_{0.920(12)}$$F$$_{1.080(12)}$$ and hydroxyl group/fluorine disorder (OD/F disorder) in the crystal structure, which gave rise to two hydrogen-bonding configurations. The Rietveld analysis showed the hydrogen-bonding geometries remains up to 9.8 GPa, indicating no pressure-induced strengthening of hydrogen bonds. The Raman spectra at ambient conditions showed three hydroxyl stretching bands at 2613, 2694, and 2718 cm$$^{-1}$$. The high frequencies of the O-D stretching modes indicated that the hydroxyls should be involved in weak or none hydrogen-bonding interactions. Up to 20.2 GPa, the mode initially centered at 2694 cm$$^{-1}$$ displayed a pressure-induced blue shift, revealing no strengthening of hydrogen bonds under compression. We discuss the existence of hydrogen bonds and the causes of the blue-shifting hydroxyls at ambient and at high pressures.

In order to investigate the cause of the increase in differential pressure in the primary helium circulator filter that occurred during the RS-14 cycle, a clogged filter was investigated. As a result of the investigation, deposits caused by silicone oil were confirmed on the surface of the filter element. These results revealed that the cause of filter clogging was silicone oil mixed into the primary system due to performance deterioration of the charcoal filter in the gas circulator of primary helium purification system. As a measure to prevent the recurrence of this event, in addition to the conventional management based on operating hours for replacing of charcoal filter in the gas circulator of primary helium purification system, we have established a new replacement plan for every three years.

Secular variations of galactic cosmic rays (GCRs) are inseparably associated with the galactic activities and should reflect the environments of the local galactic magnetic field, interstellar clouds, and nearby supernova remnants. The high-energy muons produced in the atmosphere by high-energy GCRs can penetrate deep underground and generate radioisotopes in the rock. As long lived radionuclides such as $$^{10}$$Be and $$^{26}$$Al have been accumulating in these rocks, concentrations of $$^{10}$$Be and $$^{26}$$Al can be used to estimate the long-term variations in high-energy muon yields, corresponding to those in the high-energy GCRs over a few million years. This study measured the production cross sections for muon induced $$^{10}$$Be and $$^{26}$$Al by irradiating positive muons with the momentum of 160 GeV/c on the synthetic silica plates and the granite core at the COMPASS experiment line in CERN SPS. In addition, it the contributions of the direct muon spallation reaction and the nuclear reactions by muon-induced particles on the production of long lived radionuclides in the rocks were clarified.

The ARKAIDA has been developed to realize automatic optimization of plant design from safety evaluation for the advanced reactors represented by a sodium-cooled fast reactor. ARKADIA-Design offers functions to support design optimization both in normal operating conditions and design basis events. The multi-level simulation approach by the coupled analysis such as neutronics, core deformation, core thermal hydraulics was developed as one of the main technologies. On the other hand, ARKAIDA-Safety aims for safety evaluation considering severe accidents. As a key technology, the numerical methods for in- and ex-vessel coupled phenomena during severe accidents in sodium-cooled fast reactors were tested through a hypothetical severe accident event. Improvement of the ex-vessel model and development of the AI technology to find best design solution have been started.

At the 3-GeV Rapid Cycling Synchrotron (RCS) within the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC), kicker impedance causes beam instability. A 1-MW beam with a large emittance can be delivered to the Material and Life Science Experimental Facility (MLF) by suppressing beam instabilities without the need for a transverse feedback system - simply by turning off the sextuple magnets. However, we require other high-intensity and high-quality beams with smaller emittances for the Main Ring (MR). To address this, we proposed a scheme for suppressing the kicker impedance using a diode stack and resistors, which effectively reduces beam instability. Importantly, these devices have a negligible effect on the extracted beam from the RCS.

The atomization of a liquid jet in an immiscible liquid-liquid system is significant for the safety in the nuclear industry field. The Japan Atomic Energy Agency has developed an evaluation method of a melt fuel behavior as a liquid jet in an immiscible liquid-liquid system for subsequence using mechanistic numerical simulation and has investigated liquid jet behavior in a shallow pool through numerical simulations and experiments. The paper clarifies the atomization mechanism in the wall-impinging liquid jet. Herein, the atomization behavior in the wall-impinging liquid jet in a shallow pool in an immiscible liquid-liquid system was studied in terms of droplet formation and flow field using numerical simulation and the dispersed-phase tracking method. The results show that the droplet formation in the liquid film flow of the wall-impinging liquid jet had the three patterns, and we obtained the droplet properties immediately after droplet formation and developed the theoretical criterion regions using the dimensionless numbers for droplet formation. We characterized the patterns by comparing them with the regions and elucidated the droplet formation mechanisms depending on their sources. Moreover, we elucidated that the relationship between droplet formation as the local behaviors of the jet and atomization as the whole behavior.

Development of test method for evaluation of UAS mobility capability in GNSS-denied environment

Although Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) has significant industrial potential, it is not easy to discuss how well UAS performs in places and situations where the UAS is deployed. Therefore, we designed the approach for UAS evaluation and developed the evaluation methods that make it possible to compare the UAS performances in easy-to-understand for UAS users, people without technical knowledge focusing on GNSS-denied environments. The development proceeded with the demonstration and discussion with UAS manufacturers and users, and we repeatedly improved the evaluation methods with their opinions. Finally, we confirm that the evaluation methods can describe the difference between the UAS's performance by an experiment.

During shut down of the HTTR (High Temperature engineering Test Reactor) RS-14 cycle, an increasing trend of filter differential pressure for the helium gas circulator was observed. In order to investigate this phenomenon, the blower of the primary helium purification system was disassembled and inspected. As a result, it is clear that the silicon oil mist entered into the primary coolant due to the deterioration of the charcoal filter performance. The replacement and further investigation of the filter are planning to prevent the reoccurrence of the same phenomenon in the future.

For accurate prediction of neutronic characteristics for accelerator-driven systems (ADS) and a source term of spallation neutrons for reactor physics experiments for the ADS at Kyoto University Critical Assembly (KUCA), we have launched an experimental program to measure nuclear data on ADS using the Fixed Field Alternating Gradient (FFAG) accelerator at Kyoto University. As part of this program, the proton-induced double-differential thick-target neutron-yields (TTNYs) and cross-sections (DDXs) for iron, lead, and bismuth have been measured with the time-of-flight (TOF) method. For each measurement, the target was installed in a vacuum chamber on the beamline and bombarded with 107-MeV proton beams accelerated from the FFAG accelerator. Neutrons produced from the targets were detected with stacked, small-sized neutron detectors for several angles from the incident beam direction. The TOF spectra were obtained from the detected signals and the FFAG kicker magnet's logic signals, where gamma-ray events were eliminated by pulse shape discrimination. Finally, the TTNYs and DDXs were obtained from the TOF spectra by relativistic kinematics. The measured TTNYs and DDXs were compared with calculations by the Monte Carlo transport code PHITS with its default physics model of INCL version 4.6 combined with GEM and those with the JENDL-4.0/HE nuclear data library.

At the Rapid Cycling Synchrotron (RCS) in Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC), theoretical predictions have indicated that the kicker-impedance would excite the beam-instability. A 1 MW beam with large emittance can be delivered to the Material and Life Science Experimental Facility (MLF) through suppression of the beam instabilities by choosing the appropriate machine parameters. However, we require other high-intensity and high-quality smaller emittance beams (than the 1 MW beam) for the Main Ring (MR). Hence, we proposed a scheme for suppressing the kicker-impedance by using prototype diodes and resistors, thereby demonstrating the effect on the kicker impedance reduction. However, the J-PARC RCS must be operated with a repetition rate of 25 Hz, which urged us to consider special diodes that are tolerant to heating. After developments, we have demonstrated that the special diodes with resistors can suppress the beam instability by reducing the kicker impedance. Enhanced durability of the prototype diodes and resistors for the 25 Hz operation was also realized. Moreover, the new diodes and the resistors have negligible effect on the extracted beam from the RCS. From a simulation point of view, the scheme can be employed for at least 5 MW beam operation within the stipulated specifications.

Hydrogen occupation and hydrogen-induced volume expansion in Fe$$_{0.9}$$Ni$$_{0.1}$$D$$_x$$ at high $$P-T$$ conditions

The phase relation and crystal structure of Fe$$_{0.9}$$Ni$$_{0.1}$$H$$_x$$ (D$$_x$$) at high pressures and temperatures up to 12 GPa and 1000 K were clarified by in-situ X-ray and neutron diffraction measurements. Under $$P-T$$ conditions of the present study, no deuterium atoms occupied tetragonal ($$T$$) sites of face-centered cubic (fcc) Fe$$_{0.9}$$Ni$$_{0.1}$$D$$_x$$ unlike fcc FeH$$_x$$(D$$_x$$). The deuterium-induced volume expansion per deuterium $$v_mathrm{D}$$ was determined as 2.45(4) $AA$^3$$ and 3.31(6) $AA$^3$$ for fcc and hcp phases, respectively, which were significantly larger than the corresponding values for FeD$$_x$$. The $$v_mathrm{D}$$ value slightly increased with increasing temperature. This study suggests that only 10% of nickel in iron drastically changes the behaviors of hydrogen in metal. Assuming that $$v_mathrm{D}$$ is constant regardless of pressure, the maximum hydrogen content in the Earth's inner core is estimated to be one to two times the amount of hydrogen in the oceans.
