An in-flight separator, BigRIPS, at RIBF in RIKEN provides each experiment with specific nuclides separated from many nuclides produced by projectile fragmentation or in-flight fission. In this process, nuclides other than separated ones are discarded on the slits in BigRIPS, although they include many nuclides interested from the view point of nuclear structure. In order to extract these nuclides for parasitic experiments, we are developing a method using laser ion-source (PALIS). A test experiment with $$^{78}$$Se beam from RIBF has been performed by using a gas cell set in BigRIPS. Unstable nuclides around $$^{67}$$Se were stopped in the gas cell in accordance with a calculation using LISE code. The stopping efficiency has been estimated to be about 30%. As a next step, we will establish the technique for extracting reaction products from the gas cell.

In order to produce low-energy RI beams at RIKEN RIBF, a laser ion source, PALIS, is under construction. This ion source is based on resonance ionization of RI atoms captured in Ar gas. Because the ion source is located 70m away from lasers, we have developed an optical system for laser beam transport. This system can be controlled remotely when the ion source is not accessible because of high radiation level. The position of laser beam after transport is reasonably stable, and the transport efficiency is about 50%.

Change in corrosion potential of SUS304 in natural river water

Proceedings of 2014 Nuclear Plant Chemistry Conference (NPC 2014) (USB Flash Drive), 6 Pages, 2014/10

In the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant, seawater and natural river water were poured for emergency cooling. Corrosion of materials was worried because of high chloride ion concentration from seawater. The chloride ion concentration was decreased by de-chlorination operation. However, the water was not treated in the viewpoint of microbial breeding, so that many microbes could be alive and microbially induced corrosion (MIC) was worried. So, we attempted to examine the ability of MIC occurrence by using of corrosion potential analysis. Corrosion potentials of samples rose to about 300 mV nobler than the initial values in the NB added solution. The potentials of the welded samples more easily rose than the simple plate. These potential changes are attributed to the biofilms formed on the sample surface. After about 100 days' immersion, evidence of localized corrosion was not observed. More immersion time is needed to clarify the MIC ability.

Mass production results of superconducting cables for CS and EF coils of JT-60SA

Proceedings of 24th International Cryogenic Engineering Conference (ICEC 24) and International Cryogenic Materials Conference 2012 (ICMC 2012) (CD-ROM), p.799 - 802, 2012/05

We have successfully manufactured all superconducting cables for CS and EF coils of JT-60SA. The low temperature performance of superconducting wires satisfied the specifications under sufficiently low deviations and high production yields. Ni-plated strands of EF cables having the larger sliding friction between strands than that of Cr-plated strands of CS cable caused difficulties on the cabling without any defects. Consequently, the newly developed cabling techniques with the original inspection apparatus significantly enhanced the manufacturability and were effective for guarantee of the quality.
