Times Cited Count:9 Percentile:87.04(Agriculture, Dairy & Animal Science)We have established an archive system of livestock and wild animals from the surrounding ex-evacuation zone. Wildlife within the alert zone have been exposed to low-dose-rate (LDR) radiation for a long and continuous time. In this study, we analysed the morphological characteristics of the testes and in vitro fertilization (IVF) capacity of cryopreserved sperm of raccoons from the ex-evacuation zone of the FDNPP accident. This study revealed that the chronic and LDR radiation exposure associated with the FDNPP accident had no adverse effect on the reproductive characteristics and functions of male raccoons.

The Horonobe Underground Research Center carried out surface hydrological investigation as a part of Horonobe Underground Research Laboratory project. This report describes the examination, was additional selection of everpotranspiration and precipitation measurement points in surface hydrological investigation. In this study, characteristic analysis of catchment carried out Shimizu River catchment and divided into three catchments of Penke-Ebekorobetu River catchment. Consequently, in surrounding catchment of the Horonobe Underground Research Laboratory site, it became clear that topography is low relief and highest forest type is broadleaf tree stands. The result which examined the applicability of the Everpotranspiration calculation method, applicability of profile method and Bowen's ratio thermal balance method in broadleaf tree forest, and applicability of Penman method in pastureland were high. Moreover, three additional everpotranspiration measurement sites and three additional precipitation measurement sites is selected using these results, in surrounding catchment of the Horonobe Underground Research Laboratory site.

In the spallation neutron source at the J-PARC, the mercury target vessel incorporates several countermeasures against cavitation erosion, which reduces the vessel's lifetime. Anomaly detection and diagnosis of the vessel will play an increasingly important role in long-term operation under increased proton beam powers. A laser Doppler vibrometer and a microphone are employed in an attempt to evaluate the correlation of anomalies with the vibration and sound that are excited on the vessel by the incident proton beams, generated by the mercury flow running through the double-wall structure, and caused by the microbubble generator. An overview of the development plan of anomaly detection and diagnosis for the target vessel using vibration and sound measurement is presented and discussed based on preliminary results obtained in water-loop experiments.

Characteristics of sound field measurement using a laser Doppler vibrometer (LDV) have been investigated with the aim of evaluating the applicability of the optical measurement method of sound fields to a diagnostic technique for equipment abnormality in high radiation environments. Important aspects of sound measurement using a LDV are discussed based on its dependence on optical path length and sound frequency in terms of anomaly detection and diagnosis in terms of anomaly detection and diagnosis.

Vibration and sound have been used in diagnosis of mechanical structures in a variety of industries. Under high radiation environments, however, conventional electric sensors such as an accelerometer and a microphone are not suitable especially for in-situ diagnostic systems in nuclear reactors, spallation neutron source systems, etc. since electric signals become degraded by background radiation noise. In this study, the applicability of the optical sound measurement using an laser Doppler vibrometer was investigated through the comparison between fundamental experimental results and 3D FEM analyses (LS-DYNA) for the purpose of developing an in-situ diagnostic system of a mercury target.
