The synergistic extraction of trivalent lanthanide ions (Ln(III)) with benzoylacetone (Hba) and trioctyphosphine oxide (TOPO) in an ionic liquid (IL), 1-butyl-3-methyl-imidazolium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide ([Bmim][Tf$$_{2}$$N]), has been investigated. The extractability of Ln(III) with Hba was significantly enhanced in the presence of TOPO. The composition and extraction constants of the extracted species for each Ln(III) were determined by 3-dimensional equilibrium analysis. It was found that all Ln(III) were extracted as cationic ternary complexes such as Ln(ba)$$_{2}$$(TOPO)$$_{2}$$$$^{+}$$ or Ln(ba)(TOPO)$$_{4}$$$$^{2+}$$ with Hba and TOPO. Furthermore, the formation constants of the cationic ternary complexes in the IL indicate that Lu(ba)(TOPO)$$_{4}$$$$^{2+}$$ is the most stable complex in the IL.

JMTR secondary cooling system piping and a cooling tower were inspected from the view point of long term utilization before the renewal work for the secondary cooling system of the JMTR on FY 2008. As the result, it was confirmed that crack, swelling, and exfoliations in inner of piping lining, and decay and dryness of wood in the upper part of the cooling tower. From the result of this inspection some facilities and machinery were repaired or replaced from the view point of preventive maintenance.

The condition of facilities and machinery used continuously were investigated before the renewal work of JMTR on FY 2007. The subjects of investigation were reactor building, primary cooling system tanks, secondary cooling system piping and tower, emergency generator and so on. As the result, it was confirmed that some facilities and machinery were necessary to repair and others were used continuously for long term by maintaining on the long-term maintenance plan. JMTR is planed to renew by the result of this investigation.

Zero- and longitudinal-field muon-spin rotation (ZF-$$mu$$SR and LF-$$mu$$SR) measurements were carried out on a multi-layered HgBa$$_2$$Ca$$_4$$Cu$$_5$$O$$_y$$ (Hg-1245) superconductor with $$T$$$$_{rm c}$$ of 108 K. With decreasing temperature, the observed ZF-$$mu$$SR function changed from a Gaussian-type to an exponential-type below 60 K and zero field muon precession was also observed below 45 K. These $$mu$$SR signals are attributed to the development of the antiferromagnetic ordering in inner CuO$$_2$$planes with a low carrier concentration. These results seem to indicate clear evidence that antiferromagnetism microscopically coexists with superconductivity in the Hg-1245 superconductor below 60 K.

The spin dynamics of the Heisenberg kagom$'e$ lattice antiferromagnet, potassium jarosite KFe$$_{3}$$(OH)$$_{6}$$(SO$$_{4}$$)$$_{2}$$, have been investigated by means of NMR. The spin-lattice relaxation rate, 1/${it T}$$$_{1}$$, in the ordered phase decreases sharply with lowering temperature. The experimental rate is well explained by the two-magnon process of the spin waves having an energy gap of 15 K. The temperature dependence of the sublattice magnetization also supports the existence of the spin wave. These are the first experimental evidence that the low-energy excitation in the frustrated classical kagom$'e$ lattice antiferromagnet is described by the spin wave. We calculate the spin wave in the q = 0 type 120 $$^{circ}$$ spin structure with weak single-ion-type anisotropy, and discuss the characteristics of the spin fluctuations in the Heisenberg kagom$'e$ lattice antiferromagnet.

In the separation of lanthanoids (Lns), the synergistic extraction systems have been widely investigated to enhance the extractability and separability. Recently, a method of extraction equilibrium analysis for Ln(III) in the ionic liquid (IL) synergistic extraction system with 2-thenoyltrifluoroacetone (Htta)-trioctylphosphine oxide (TOPO) in 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide was reported. In this study, the extraction equilibrium of Ln in the benzoylacetone (Hba)-TOPO system exhibiting higher Ln separability than the Htta-TOPO system was investigated. The effect of $$beta$$-diketones on the extracted species and the relationship between the extracted species and Ln separability were clarified. A three-dimensional non-linear analysis of log ${it D}$-log [ba$$^{-}$$]$$_{aq}$$-log [TOPO]$$_{IL}$$ was applied in the Hba-TOPO synergistic extraction system, and both Ln(ba)$$_{2}$$(TOPO)$$_{2}$$$$^{+}$$ and Ln(ba)(TOPO)$$_{4}$$$$^{2+}$$ were found as the extracted species. The formation of 1:1:4 dicationic complex was not observed in the Htta-TOPO synergistic extraction system, indicating that the extracted species is dependent on the acidity of $$beta$$-diketone. Consequently, it was suggested that the formation of the highly hydrophobic 1:1:4 complex is a factor of higher Ln separability.
