The previous work suggested that the system without the ring exchange interaction has a spin excitation gap between the singlet ground state and the triplet excitation, because a spontaneous dimerization occurs in the ground state. The present study indicates that as the ring exchange increases, a quantum phase transition occurs at some critical value to another spin gap phase where the pattern of the dimerization is different from the initial one.

The matrix elements proportional to the intensity of the singlet-triplet ESR transition are calculated in the presence of the Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interaction. Some angle-dependent selection rules is also proposed.

Released radiation sources still remain too high to permit entry into some areas of the RBs to allow the damage to be assessed and to allow carrying out the restoration of lost safety functions, decommissioning activities, etc. In order to clarify the situation of this contamination in the RBs, 18 samples were subjected to analyses to determine the surface radionuclide concentrations and to characterize the radionuclide distributions in the samples. Decontamination tests on the sample of Unit 2 were conducted to reduce the levels of radioactivity present near the sample surface. As a result of the tests, the level of radioactivity of the sample was reduced with the removal of 97% of the contamination present near the sample surface.

The financial accounting and contract management system of JAEA, built on a commercial ERP package, had suffered from serious problems of high lifecycle cost, poor response, and lack of extensibility, due to the too much customization to the ERP package, and disorganized software structure. To solve those problems, three approaches were applied; (1) conducting thorough analysis of business flow and fit/gap, which enabled removing all customization brought to the ERP package; (2) dividing the system into subsystems, and clearly defining interfaces between the subsystems, which increases the transparency, extensibility and performance of the system; (3) outsourcing the development of the subsystems to multiple venders to reduce the development cost. Those approaches can be useful for developing business information systems using commercial software to save time and cost, while meeting the unique requirements of an organization.

In order to observe the detailed information about the water distribution in MEA and GDL in fuel cells, a high spatial resolution and high sensitivity neutron imaging system are required. We developed an imaging system using the neutron color imaging intensifier and continuously observed water distribution in operating a fuel cell. By using the system, a small type fuel cell under operation was continuously observed at the TNRF in every 20 sec. In the results, the water area was appeared from GDL and MEA, and expanded to the channel of the cathode side. On the other hand, voltage was gradually reduced with the operation time, and steeply dropped. It is considered that voltage drop was caused by blockage of gas flow due to the piling up water in the channel of the cathode side.

Two human esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) cell lines, TE-2 and TE-13, were examined for their response to cisplatin using MTT assay, flow cytometry and DNA fragmentation assays. Real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction was also used to evaluate the mRNA expression of multidrug resistance protein 2 (MRP2) in both cell lines. Platinum localizations of intracellular and intranuclear were measured using in-air micro-PIXE. TE-2 cells were more sensitive to cisplatin than TE-13 cells. The results of this study suggest that in-air micro-PIXE could be a useful quantitative method for evaluating the cisplatin sensitivity of individual cells. Finally, we speculate that MRP2 in the cell membrane may play an important role in regulating cisplatin sensitivity of ESCC cells.

The beam from the moderator is deflected by multi-channel supermirrors and split into three branches for individual experiments. In this study, we have optimized the design of the beam optics and shields using the Monte Carlo simulation package PHITS. The neutron fluxes of beams are expected to be cmstrsMW, cmsMW, cmsMW, with polarization of 99.8%.

In KEK, the new Superconducting RF Test Facility(STF) is being constructed, including the electro-polish system (EP), the high pressure rinsing system (HPR), the clean-room, the refrigerator system, the high power RF source system, and the vertical test system. The cavity is generally measured in the vertical cryostat for the performance test. The new vertical test facility was constructed since the last year, and completed at the beginning of March. The first test was done for the total system check at the beginning of July.

A new program was started out to create a new medical scientific field, which is consisting of radiation oncology and nuclear medicine, utilizing the advanced accelerator and ion beam technology. An in-air micro-PIXE analyzer system, which is among the most important technical basis of the program, was upgraded to improve accuracy of elemental mapping for samples having thickness variation in a scope of microbeam scanning. In the program, on the other hand, in order to approach important bio-medical problems on cancer, intracellular dynamics of the trace elements according to mechanism of development of diseases were studied using this system. This paper outlines this program and shows the system upgraded, and results of preliminary studied about the problems.

Neutron radiography is an effective water diagnostic tool for fuel cells. We continuously observed water behavior in a small type fuel cell under operation by high performance neutron radiography system using Neutron image intensifier. Water generated in the cell was initially accumulated in region of MEA and GDL, extending to a channel gradually. We will report and discuss about relationship between voltage drop and the water behavior in presentation.
