Understanding of long-term history of water-conducting features such as flow-path fractures is key issue to evaluate deep geological environment for geological disposal of high-level radioactive waste (HLW). Thus, we conducted study on the geological features and the long-term behavior of flow-path fractures based on the data obtained at -300m levels in the Mizunami Underground research laboratory (MIU), central Japan. Total 1670 fractures were mapped in underground gallery at the -300m levels. Flow-path fractures occupy about 11% of all fractures. The flow-path fractures are divided into grout filling fractures and low inflow-rate fractures. All of the grout filling fractures is filled with calcite as fracture filling minerals without conspicuous host rock alteration around fractures. The low inflow-rate fractures possessed similar geological character with the sealed fractures which are not acted as flow-path. The geological character of fracture filling and host tock alteration around fractures indicates the history of the formation at the time of intrusion and emplacement of host granite (Stage I), then filling at hydrothermal event (Stage II), and finally opening and elongation during exhumation stage (Stage III). In conclusion, the present flow-path fractures were formed by opening and/or elongation of pre-existed fractures, which were filled at the hydrothermal event, at the time of exhumation.

An event, in which one of WRMs were disabled to detect the neutron flux in the reactor core, occurred during the period of reactor shut down of HTTR in March, 2010. The actual life time of WRM was unexpectedly shorter than the past developed life time. Investigation of the cause of the outage of WRM toward the recovery of the life time up to the developed life is one of the issues to develop the technology basis of High Temperature Gas cooled Reactor (HTGR). Then, a post irradiation examination was planned to specify the damaged part causing the event in the WRM was also planned. For the investigation, the X-ray computed tomography scanner in Fuels Monitoring Facility (FMF). This report describes the preliminary investigation on the cause of outage of the WRM. The results of study for transportation method of the irradiated WRM from HTTR to FMF is also reported with the record to complete the transport operation.

Future synchrotron light source using a 5-GeV energy recovery linac (ERL) is under proposal by our Japanese collaboration team, and we are conducting R&D efforts for that. We are developing high-brightness DC photocathode guns, two types of cryomodules for both injector and main superconducting (SC) linacs, and 1.3 GHz high CW-power RF sources. We are also constructing the Compact ERL (cERL) for demonstrating the recirculation of low-emittance, high-current beams using above-mentioned critical technologies.

In-pile functional tests of breeding blankets have been planned by Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA), using a test blanket module (TBM) which will be loaded in the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER). In preparation for the in-pile functional tests, JAEA has been being performed irradiation experiments of lithium titanate (LiTiO), which is the first candidate of solid breeder materials for the blanket of the demonstration reactor (DEMO) under designing in Japan. The present report describes (1) results of a detailed design and trial fabrication tests of a dismantling apparatus for irradiation capsules which were used in irradiation experiments by the Japan Materials Testing Reactor (JMTR) of JAEA, and (2) results of a preliminary investigation of a glove box facility for post-irradiation examinations (PIEs). In the detailed design of the dismantling apparatus, datailed specifications and the installation methods were examined, based on results of a conceptual design and basic design. In the trial fabrication, cutting tests were curried out by making a mockup of a cutting component. Furthermore, a preliminary investigation of a glove box facility was carried out in order to secure a facility for PIE work after the capsule dismantling, which revealed a technical feasibility.

CFD simulation using the Reynolds stress model was performed to evaluate turbulence-induced forces on the piping. The turbulence energy with the CFD simulation was compared with pressure fluctuation distributions obtained by the test with a 1/3 scale elbow simulating the JSFR hot-leg piping. The profile of turbulence energy was good agreement with that of the pressure fluctuation. The magnitude of pressure fluctuation can also be estimated from calculated turbulence energy multiplied by a certain coefficient. In the vibration analysis, the power spectrum density (PSD) of the pressure fluctuation was derived from the measured normalized PSD multiplied by the coefficient. The vibration analysis method was proposed based on the PSDs derived by the above procedure and correlation lengths. The analysis results of vibration response showed good agreement with the flow-induced-vibration test results, thereby it can be said that the vibration analysis method developed in this study is valid.

In-pile functional tests of breeding blankets for fusion reactors have been planned by Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA), using a test blanket module (TBM) which will be loaded in ITER. The present report describes a conceptual investigation and a basic design of the dismantling process for irradiation capsules which were used in irradiation experiments by the Japan Materials Testing Reactor (JMTR) of JAEA. In the present design, the irradiation capsule is cut by a band saw; the released tritium is recovered safely by a purge-gas system, and is consolidated into a radioactive waste form. Furthermore, adoption of the inner-box enclosing the dismantling apparatus has brought a prospect to be able to utilize an existing hot cell (beta- cell) equipped with usual wall material permeable to tritium, without extensive refurbishing of the cell. Thus, the present study has indicated the feasibility of the present dismantling process for the irradiated JMTR capsules containing tritium.

The distributed material database system named 'Data-Free-Way' has been developed by four organizations (the National Institute for Materials Science, the Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute, the Japan Nuclear Cycle Development Institute, and the Japan Science and Technology Corporation) under a cooperative agreement. In order to create additional values of the system, knowledge base system, in which knowledge extracted from the material database is expressed, is planned to be developed for more effective utilization of Data-Free-Way. XML (eXtensible Markup Language) has been adopted as the description method of the retrieved results and the meaning of them. This paper will describe the description method of knowledge extracted from the material database with XML and the distributed material knowledge base system.

The many-peak structures which are clearly observed in the Co 2p-3d XAS-MCD spectra cannot be well explained by atomic multiplet calculations but are better explained by the Co 3d unoccupied states predicted by linear muffin-tin orbital atomic sphere approximation band structure calculations. The MCD spectra show an obvious contribution of the orbital angular momentum component to the magnetic moment in these alloys. The ratio between the orbital angular momentum and spin derived from the MCD spectra varies by more than a factor of 2 within these alloys. The mechanism of this variation is discussed in comparison with the band structure calculations.
