Strong flux pinning by columnar defects with directionally dependent morphologies in GdBCO-coated conductors irradiated with 80 MeV Xe ions

We show that Xe ion irradiation with 80 MeV to GdBa$$_{2}$$Cu$$_{3}$$Oy-coated conductors creates different morphologies of columnar defects (CDs) depending on the irradiation angles relative to the c-axis: continuous CDs with a larger diameter are formed for oblique irradiation at $$theta_{rm i}$$ = 45$$^{circ}$$, whereas the same ion beam at a different angle ($$theta_{rm i}$$ = 0$$^{circ}$$) induces the formation of discontinuous CDs. The direction-dependent morphologies of CDs significantly affect the angular behavior of the critical current density $$J_{rm c}$$.

Based on detailed geochemical and paleontological analyses for lowland sediments in the Miyazaki Plain, southwest Japan, we clearly identified environmental change from the lower terrestrial sediments to the upper shallow marine sediments. Radiocarbon ages and tephra data suggest that the environmental change is attributed to local subsidence due to the 1662 Kanbun Hyuganada Sea Earthquake shown in historical records. This findings are important for historical earthquake studies because the study area is a part of the expected focal region of megathrust earthquakes along the Nankai Trough.

Diffusion behavior of D$$_{2}$$O in Fe$$_{3}$$O$$_{4}$$ film on Fe formed in an NaOH solution containing oxidants

This research aimed to confirm the formation of Fe$$_{3}$$O$$_{4}$$ film on Fe immersed in aqueous 45 mass% NaOH solution containing some oxidants at the boiling temperature, to recognize the optimum immersion time for the formation of thick and protective film, and to reveal the absorption behavior of D$$_{2}$$O in the Fe$$_{3}$$O$$_{4}$$ film at room temperature. The results were obtained as follows. It was confirmed that Fe$$_{3}$$O$$_{4}$$ film was formed on Fe immersed in the NaOH solution for a time more than 0.6 ks, and the film thickness increased parabolically with an increase in the immersion time. D$$_{2}$$O absorption test was carried out to the films formed in the NaOH solution for immersion times of 1.2 and 3.6 ks. An amount of D$$_{2}$$O absorbed into the film increased with an increase in an absorption time up to 1000 ks, and an absorption time more than 1000 ks made an amount of D$$_{2}$$O constant. The constant amount of D$$_{2}$$O was larger for the film formed on Fe immersed in the NaOH solution for 3.6 ks than that for 1.2 ks. The transient of the amount of D$$_{2}$$O absorbed into the film was analyzed on the basis of Fick's law for diffusion, and diffusion coefficients of D$$_{2}$$O were obtained to be 5.1$$times$$10$$^{-15}$$ cm$$^{2}$$ s$$^{-1}$$ and 9.9$$times$$10$$^{-15}$$ cm$$^{2}$$ s$$^{-1}$$ for the films formed for 1.2 and 3.6 ks, respectively. Therefore it was estimated that the diffusion coefficient of the Fe$$_{3}$$O$$_{4}$$ film was in the region from 5.1$$times$$10$$^{-15}$$ cm$$^{2}$$ s$$^{-1}$$ to 9.9$$times$$10$$^{-15}$$ cm$$^{2}$$ s$$^{-1}$$.

3D crash calculation of stack and reactor building of HTTR

Integrity confirmation of building against the crash of flying object due to the tornado was carried out by formulas which calculate by simple shape. However, there was no study on crash calculation using complex shape such as the stack and reactor building. In this study, the crash calculation was carried out by a real shape model of High Temperature Engineering Test Reactor (HTTR) stack and reactor building using three-dimensional analysis code (VPS: Virtual Performance Solution). In the calculation, parameters of VPS were conservatively set in accordance with the formulas, which are formulated based on results of crash experiments and approved by the Nuclear Regulatory Authority. The crash calculation of stack and reactor building of HTTR was carried out using VPS. As a result, the integrity of building against the crash by stack was confirmed.

The forerunner of JAEA, found a smelter in 1964 to do industrialization tests of hydrometallurgical extraction process from domestic uranium ore to uranium tetrafluoride, extracted at Ningyo-toge. Yotsugi Mill Tailings Pond was constructed for the purpose of depositing slag and other things generated due to the operation of the smelter. Furthermore supernatant water from the deposition field had been treated appropriately at wastewater treatment facilities, which has been provided in the downstream site of the pond. We have been utilizing the Yotsugi Mill Tailings Pond as a temporary storage field of mine water generated from the old mining gallery, mainly. After filing an abolition report of facilities of the smelter, with the completion of industrial trials of refinery in 1982. Ningyo-toge environmental engineering center has studied for processing uranium and radium, in wastewater, which must be reduced more safely by advancing these processing technical development. Supernatant water of The Pond is treated at the wastewater treatment facilities before discharging to Ikegogawa-river. And those collateralize the emission standards to discharge to the river set at the Center with continuing stable processing. This document summarized the history of the wastewater treatment, technical development for the water treatment, and the current situation of the water treatment.

Flux pinning properties in YBCO films with growth-controlled nano-dots and heavy-ion irradiation defects

In order to clarify the influence of size and spatial distribution of three-dimensional pinning centers (3D-PCs) on hybrid flux pinning, columnar defects (CDs) were installed by using 200 MeV Xe ions along the $$c$$-axis direction into quasi-multilayered films consisting of YBa$$_{2}$$Cu$$_{3}$$Oy layers and pseudo layers of BaSnO$$_{3}$$. The positive effect of the BaSnO$$_{3}$$ doping on the hybrid flux pinning stands out for the critical current density $$J_{rm c}$$ around $$B parallel c$$ in high magnetic field and/or inclined magnetic field off the $$c$$-axis, whereas there is little difference in the $$J_{rm c}$$ at $$B parallel c$$ among the same growth temperature samples for low magnetic field. In the case of the in-plane distributed BaSnO$$_{3}$$ nano-dots, the Jc around $$B parallel ab$$ is remarkably enhanced, whereas there is a detrimental effect on the Jc around $$B parallel c$$. These imply that the tuning of 3D-PCs is one of the keys to improve the $$J_{rm c}$$ at all magnetic field orientations for the hybrid flux pinning.

State-of-the art dispersion models were applied to simulate $$^{137}$$Cs dispersion from Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant disaster fallout in the Baltic Sea and from Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Plant releases in the Pacific Ocean after the 2011 tsunami. Models were of different nature, from box to full three-dimensional models, and included water/sediment interactions. Agreement between models was very good in the Baltic. In the case of Fukushima, results from models could be considered to be in acceptable agreement only after a model harmonization process consisting of using exactly the same forcing (water circulation and parameters) in all models. It was found that the dynamics of the considered system (magnitude and variability of currents) was essential in obtaining a good agreement between models. The difficulties in developing operative models for decision-making support in these dynamic environments were highlighted.

Environmental remediation for the upstream of Yotsugi Mill Tailings Pond, Ningyo-toge Uranium Mine

Ningyo-toge Environmental Engineering Center has been conducting environmental remediation of the Ningyo-toge Uranium Mine, after decades of mine-related activities were terminated. Its purposes are to take measures to ensure safety and radiation protection from the exposure pathways to humans in future, and to prevent the occurrence of mining pollution. As part of the remediation, upstream part of the Yotsugi Mill Tailings Pond, the highest prioritized facility, has been remediated to fiscal year 2012. Multi-layered capping has been constructed using natural material, after specifications and whole procedure being examined in terms of long-term stability, radiation protection, economics, etc. Monitoring has been carried out to confirm the effectiveness of the capping, in terms of settlement, dose and radon exhalation rates, etc. Monitoring of drainage volume of penetrated rainwater is planned. Accumulated data will be examined and used for remediation of downstream part of the Pond.

We carried out mineral composition analysis, morphological classification of volcanic glass shards and refractive index measurements of the glass shards and orthopyroxene from the eruption products from Sakurajima volcano. In this study, refractive indexes of hydrated and non-hydrated parts within each individual glass shard were measured separately. This measurements in consideration of hydration in glass shards made possible distinct discrimination of the pumice samples from the three eruption events of Bunmei, An-ei, and Taisho. Pumice layers in the core samples obtained from the southern part of the Miyazaki Plain were also identified as the Sakurajima-Bunmei tephra by the above mentioned analyses, and also by the data of radiocarbon dating for coaly materials included in the pumice layers. Occurrences of the pumice layers suggest that the Sakurajima-Bunmei tephra could have reached the southern part of Miyazaki Plain as pumice falls.

A detailed intercomparison of marine dispersion models applied to the releases from Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant has been carried out in the frame of MODARIA program, of the IAEA. Models have been compared in such a way that the reasons of the discrepancies between them can be assessed. The overall idea is to harmonize models, making them run with the same forcing in a step-by-step procedure, in such a way that the main agent in producing discrepancy between models can be found. It has been found that the main reason of discrepancies between models is due to the description of the hydrodynamics. However, once this has been suppressed, some variability between model outputs remains due to intrinsic differences between models. The numerical experiments have been carried out for a perfectly conservative radionuclide and for $$^{137}$$Cs. Model outputs for this radionuclide have also been compared with measurements in water and sediments.

Revealing the second harmonic generation in a femtosecond laser-driven cluster-based plasma by analyzing shapes of Ar XVII spectral lines

We present experiments dealing with a femtosecond laser-driven cluster-based plasma, where by analyzing the nonlinear phenomenon of satellites of spectral lines of Ar XVII, we revealed the nonlinear phenomenon of the generation of the second harmonic of the laser frequency. For performing this analysis we developed new results in the theory of satellites of spectral lines. From such lineshape analysis we found, in particular, that the efficiency of converting the short (40 fs) intense (3$$times$$10$$^{18}$$ W/cm$$^2$$) incident laser light into the second harmonic was 2%. This result is in the excellent agreement with the 2-Dimensional Particle-In-Cell (2D PIC) simulation that we also performed. There is also an order of magnitude agreement between the thresholds for the SHG found from the line shape analysis and from the 2D PIC simulations.

To investigate the effect of discontinuity of 1-D pinning centers on the flux pinning in a wide range of magnetic field directions, discontinuous columnar defects (CDs) and continuous CDs were formed in GdBCO coated conductors using Xe-ion irradiations with 80 and 270 MeV, respectively. An overall shift upward in Jc, for the 80-MeV-irradiated sample compared to the 270-MeV-irradiated one, can be observed in every direction of magnetic field, which is more remarkable as temperature decreases. This implies a synergetic effect of the pinning interaction between the linearity and the discontinuity for the discontinuous CDs.
