The PSTEP is a nationwide research collaboration in Japan and was conducted from April 2015 to March 2020, supported by a Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research on Innovative Areas from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan. It has made a significant progress in space weather research and operational forecasts, publishing over 500 refereed journal papers and organizing four international symposiums, various workshops and seminars, and summer school for graduate students at Rikubetsu in 2017. This paper is a summary report of the PSTEP and describes the major research achievements it produced.

Characteristics of beta reference radiation fields at the Facility of Radiation Standards (FRS), JAEA for their practical applications in beta dosimetry

Yoshitomi, Hiroshi; Kowatari, Munehiko; Suzuki, Takashi

Proceedings of 4th Asian and Oceanic Congress on Radiation Protection (AOCRP-4) (CD-ROM), 4 Pages, 2015/07

The Facility of Radiation Standards (FRS) in the Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) provides beta-ray calibration fields for the customers to calibrate dosemeters. Two different types of beta-ray irradiation systems, so called BSS2 and JBS, have been installed and operated in the FRS. They have quite different types of the beta-ray radiation sources, which might be attributed to variations in dosimetric quantities. Variations in these quantities would affect the calibration factor of a dosemeter. A comparison of dosimetric quantities for beta reference radiation fields of both beta-ray irradiation systems was made, in order to investigate how these quantities differ between them and how much differences affect calibration results. With regard to the depth dose curve which is one of the key dosimetric quantities, it was found that they showed different profiles between both systems reflecting their characteristics. This implies that the difference between two systems might affect the calibration of dosemeters, especially one with more than 400 mg/cm$$^2$$ thickness or one made of high-Z materials for $$^{90}$$Sr/$$^{90}$$Y field.

To evaluate the corrosion resistance due to fuel-cladding chemical interaction (FCCI), corrosion tests of an advanced austenitic stainless steel of French manufacture and modified SUS316 stainless steel fabricated by air melting method and doble vacuum melting method with CsOH-CsI mixture, tellurium and iodine were conducted at 700$$^{circ}$$C for 100 hours. The result were summarized as follows. (1)The CsOH-CsI mixture (CsOH-CsI=1) produced intergranular attack, (2)Tellurium and iodine produced matrix attack. (3)There were little difference in corrosion morphology between three alloys. (4)Advanced austenitic stainless steel and modified SUS316 stainless steel farbricated by air melting method had almost same corrosion resistances to CsOH-CsI mixtures and iodine as modified SUS316 stainless steel farbricated by double vacuum melting method.

Structure analysis of resin-filler compounds by small-angle neutron scattering

Yamaguchi, Daisuke; Koizumi, Satoshi; Ojima, Hitoshi*; Isoyama, Ryo*; Ishiwatari, Yoshiyuki*; Kodama, Hiroto*; Takeda, Hisanori*; Fukita, Hitoshi*; Takashima, Yoshiyuki*

Resin-filler composites were investigated by small-angle neutron scattering (SANS). Two types of fillers, talc and TiO$$_{2}$$, were employed and compounded with polypropylene in this study. The dispersion state of the fillers was examined by SANS measurements. In addition, the size distribution of the fillers was separately measured through the laser right scattering and SEM. The calculated scattering function including the polydispersity of fillers whose size distribution reflects the results of laser right scattering and SEM consistently reproduced the experimental SANS scattering profiles.

In a fusion demo reactor, a rump-up scenario of the plasma is studied. The plasma is growing up and contacting on the first wall surface (limiter-phase) before shifting to diverter phase. Heat load of this time is a transient thing of the dozens seconds. However, it is bigger than the heat load which the first wall receives at the steady state. Therefore there are two idea to be taken with a demo reactor for this heat load. One is that addition a function of limiter to blanket oneself. Another one is design limiter as the independent structure. It is necessary to finally compare the superiority and inferiority of both in TBR (Tritium Breeding ratio) influenced by thickness of the surface tungsten layer and occupation area. This study perform conceptual design of independent limiter.
