For studying the effect of spin and orbital ordering patterns on the charge excitations in YVO, we have observed charge excitations across the Mott-Hubbard gap by means of resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) at BL11XU/SPring-8 with a synchrotron radiation source. The RIXS in the hard X-ray regime is a powerful experimental method to probe the momentum dependence of the excitations. We can utilize the element selectivity of the excitation process as provided by the tuned photon energy of the incident beam with respect to the absorption edge process of the 3d metal cation under investigation. The temperature and momentum dependences of the data allow first-hand insight into the anisotropic behavior of the Mott gap excitations.
