Nitridation on Al(111) by an energetic N$$_2$$ beam

超音速の窒素分子ビームをAl(111)表面に照射した。窒素のアップテークは放射光X線光電子分光法を用いて測定した。反応閾値の1.8eVより高い2.0eVのビームを利用した時のアップテークカーブはリニアな形を示したので窒素がバルクの中に入ることがわかった。角度分解光電子分光スペクトルから深さ方向の元素分布を計算した。

A supersonic N$$_{2}$$ molecular beam was used to irridate a clean Al(111) surface, and nitrogen uptake monitored using synchrotron-radiation X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Previous work showed that the threshold kinetic energy for reaction was 1.8 eV. The uptake curve for a 2.0 eV beam was nearly linear, indicating that a protective nitride layer is not formed, and suggesting that nitrogen penetrates into the bulk. A depth-profile generated from angular-specific spectra reveals that this is indeed the case.
