Soybean is an important crop in terms of production of food, oil, and forage. In this study, we examine whether ion beam irradiation is effective in producing a mutant in soybean. Soybean dried seeds were irradiated with 320 MeV carbon ions with the range of 0.2-25 Gy. Plants from irradiated seeds were grown to obtain a population of M2 seeds. The harvested M2 seeds were sown in the field and generation of individuals with visibly altered phenotypes was examined. An observed striking change was unscheduled generation of stem(s) from the node where cotyledons were formed. Another observed change was yellowish green-colored leaves. We confirmed that this phenotypic change was heritable. We are currently working on screening more mutants as well as producing more M2 populations.
