Development status on high-temperature gas-cooled reactor system at JAEA, Japan

JAEAにおける高温ガス炉システム開発の現状

日本原子力研究開発機構(JAEA)は、原子力エネルギーを工業用の熱源として利用することを目的とした高温ガス冷却炉(HTGR)、及び原子力水素製造技術に関する研究開発を、高温工学試験研究炉(HTTR)計画の中で進めてきた。JAEA大洗研究開発センターに設置されたHTTRは、熱出力30MWの現時点で世界で最も高出力なHTGR炉であり、現在も運転中である。HTTRは、原子炉からの高温の熱(950度)の取り出し、50日間の全出力運転、及び受動的な安全性の実証試験に成功してきた。これらのHTTRの実績値は、VHTR(超高温ガス炉)とも呼ばれる第4世代HTGRの重要な技術的な要件の幾つかを満足するものであった。また、JAEAで行われている熱化学ISプロセスによる水素製造の開発は、原子力水素の研究開発の進展において世界をリードするものである。本発表では、新しいエネルギー源である水素の必要性、HTGRを用いた水素製造とその研究開発の世界の現状、水素製造システムの開発にかかわるHTTR計画の概要、そしてこの分野における国際協力の可能性について述べる。

To enable nuclear energy application to a wide range of heat process industries, Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) has continued extensive efforts for the development of high-temperature gas-cooled reactor (HTGR) and nuclear hydrogen production technologies in the framework of the High Temperature Engineering Test Reactor (HTTR) project. The 30 MWt HTTR, currently the world's largest HTGR reactor, is developed and operated by JAEA on the site of the JAEA's Oarai Research & Development Center. The HTTR has successfully derived the high temperature (950 C) heat output, completed the 50-day full-power heat production test, and carried out the nuclear passive safety demonstration. The HTTR performance records fulfill some of the important technological requirements for the Generation-IV HTGR, also known as VHTR (Very High Temperature Reactor). In addition, development of hydrogen production by a thermochemical IS process carried out at JAEA leads the world's R&D progress on nuclear hydrogen. In the presentation, the necessity of the new energy source of hydrogen and its production using HTGR is briefly explained as well as world-wide status of its development study, and the overview of the HTTR project is given with emphasis on the hydrogen production system development, followed by proposal of possible international cooperation in this field.
