A fibrous adsorbent for arsenic(V) was synthesized by radiation-induced emulsion graft polymerization of 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate phosphoric acid monomer which composed of phosphoric acid mono (50%) and di (50%) ethyl methacrylate ester onto nonwoven cotton fabric and subsequent chemical modification. The graft polymerization was carried out by contacting the nonwoven cotton fabric at absorbed 20 kGy with 5% monomer solution for 1 h at 40 $$^{circ}$$C. The resulting grafted phosphoric acid onto nonwoven cotton fabric (FPC) had 110% grafting degree that corresponded to 2 mol-phosphoric acid per 1 kg of FPC. The following next reaction for making adsorbent, zirconium(IV) was loaded onto FPC by contacting with zirconium solution adjusted to pH2. To evaluate the adsorption ability for arsenic(V), adsorption test was tested with 10 ppm of arsenic solution at pH2. A total amount of arsenic adsorption was 1,500 mg per 1 kg of adsorbent.
