Time-evolution of oxidation states at the Ni(111) surface; O$$_{2}$$ incident translational energy dependence

In this study, the oxidation states of Ni(111) surface, which were made by irradiation of supersonic O$$_{2}$$ molecular beam (SSOMB), were analyzed by synchrotron radiation photoemission spectroscopy (SR-XPS). Especially, the initial sticking probability dependence on the O$$_{2}$$ translational energy is discussed. The initial sticking rate increased as translational energy increased from 0.3 eV to 1.0 eV, slightly decreased toward 2.2 eV, and a remarkable re-increase was observed in the region around 2.3 eV. These results reveal that activated adsorption of O$$_{2}$$ molecules takes place with at least two potential energy barriers of 1 eV and larger than 2.3 eV.
