Towards observation of magnetic excitation in organic conductor

分子性導体における磁気励起の観測に向けて

今日まで分子性導体の磁性研究に中性子非弾性散乱が適用された報告はない。これは、分子性導体の単結晶試料の量産が困難なためである。最近、$$beta^{prime}$$-(BEDT-TTF)$$_2$$ICl$$_2$$の巨大(数mm級)単結晶の作製の成功が報告された。そこでわれわれは、分子性導体における磁気励起観測に向けた第一歩として、この系に対する中性子散乱実験を行った。測定はJ-PARCに設置された冷中性子ディスクチョッパー型分光器アマテラスを用いて行った。約230個(1.5g)の単結晶が試料ホルダーに並べられた。結晶からのブラッグ回折が、2次元面に垂直な[100]方向について指数づけされた。磁気ブラッグに関しては、形状因子の急激な減衰のため観測されなかった。

There is no report of application of inelastic neutron scattering on organic conductors until today because of the tiny size and amount of their crystals. Recently, it was reported that synthesis of huge single crystal (a few mm class) of $$beta^{prime}$$-(BEDT-TTF)$$_2$$ICl$$_2$$ had been succeeded. The system exhibits an antiferromagnetic order below 22 K. We performed a neutron scattering experiment on this system as the first step toward observation of the magnetic excitation in the organic conductor. The measurement was carried out using a cold-neutron disk-chopper spectrometer AMATERAS installed in J-PARC. About 230 pieces of the single crystals (1.5 g) was aligned to mount onto a sample holder. Bragg diffractions from the crystal were indexed along the [100] direction, which is perpendicular to the two-dimensional (2D) plane. Magnetic Bragg peak was not observed in this direction because of rapid damping of the magnetic form factor.
