The rational for geological disposal of higher activity radioactive wastes has been extensively developed over the last 4 decades, but has not been widely accepted out with the "radwaste community". The difficulties of communicating safety to the general public in any nuclear topic is well known, but even non-specialist scientists and engineers are often unconvinced - particularly for disposal in a seismically active country like Japan. In this paper, we will discuss on what and how geoscientific knowledge and evidence are used to provide the safety case of a repository and, on how this can be communicated with a range of the interested people.
