Effect of sludge behavior on performance of centrifugal contactor

The effects of sludge behavior on performance of centrifugal contactor were investigated. The sludge accumulation in the centrifugal contactor was observed only in the rotor during the operation. Based on the sludge accumulation behavior, the effects of sludge accumulation in the rotor on performance of phase separation and of extraction were investigated using several types of rotors which simulated the different sludge accumulation levels in the separation area. It was confirmed that sludge accumulation in the rotor would affect the phase separation performance, but not affect the extraction performance. This tendency can be explained by the structure of the centrifugal contactor, in which extraction reaction and phase separation proceed mainly in the housing and rotor, respectively.
