JAEA participated in the Fault Slip Experiment of Mont Terri Project which aims at understanding (1) the conditions for slip activation and stability of clay faults, and (2) the evolution of the coupling between fault slip, pore pressure and fluids migration. The experiment uses SIMFIP probe to estimate (1) the hydraulic and elastic properties of fault zone elements, (2) the state of stresses across the fault zone and (3) the fault zone apparent strength properties (friction coefficient and cohesion). To elaborate on the Fault Slip Experiment, JAEA performed friction experiment of borehole cores of depths 47.2m and 37.3m using a rotary-shear low to high-velocity friction apparatus at Institute of Geology, China Earthquake Administration.
