JRR-3 has not been in operation since the end of 2010, because of the new regulatory requirement established after the large earthquake and the concomitant accident at the nuclear power plant. Japan Atomic Energy Agency submitted an application document for the restart of JRR-3 in 2014 which is still under the review. A latest official announcement by JAEA tells an expected restart of JRR-3 in the late of 2020. While this review process, there is continuing development in the field of sample environment towards restart, and its application to J-PARC MLF. One of which is dynamic nuclear polarization applied to SANS and neutron reflectometer. Another key development is an anvil-type pressure cell. Highest pressure is 10 GPa, and used in neutron scattering experiment not only in Japan at J-PARC, but also in ISIS and ILL.
