層状酸化物ペロブスカイト構造を持つSr$$_2$$RuO$$_4$$の超伝導は長年にわたり議論がなされており、その理解のために背景となる常伝導状態の振る舞いは極めて重要となる。本研究では低エネルギーミュオンを用いることで、表面における磁性の存在を見出した。この磁性は50Kよりも高い温度から見られており、他の物質の状態とも深い関連があるものと考えられる。

The layered oxide perovskite Sr$$_2$$RuO$$_4$$, which has been intensively investigated due to its unusual properties. Whilst the debate on the symmetry of the superconducting state in Sr$$_2$$RuO$$_4$$ is still ongoing, a deeper understanding of the Sr$$_2$$RuO$$_4$$ normal state appears crucial as this is the background in which electron pairing occurs. Here, by using low-energy muon spin spectroscopy we discover the existence of surface magnetism in Sr$$_2$$RuO$$_4$$ at an onset temperature higher than 50 K. Our observations set a reference for the discovery of the same magnetic phase in other materials.
