Spin Seebeck mechanical force

Electric current has been used to send electricity to far distant places. On the other hand, spin current, a flow of electron spin, can in principle also send angular momentum to distant places. In a magnet, there is a universal spin carrier called a spin wave, a wave-type excitation of magnetization. Since spin waves exhibit a long propagation length, it should be able to send angular momentum that can generate torque and force at a distant place: a new function of magnets. Here we observe mechanical angular momentum transmission and force generation due to spin waves injected into Y$$_3$$Fe$$_5$$O$$_{12}$$ by the spin-Seebeck effect. The spin-wave current, transmitted through a Y$$_3$$Fe$$_5$$O$$_{12}$$ micro cantilever, was found to create a mechanical force on the cantilever as a non-local reaction of the spin-Seebeck effect. Spin-wave current can be generated remotely even in open circuits, and it can be used to drive micro mechanical devices.

Observation of gyromagnetic reversal

We report direct observation of gyromagnetic reversal, which is the sign change of gyromagnetic ratio in a ferrimagnet Ho$$_3$$Fe$$_5$$O$$_{12}$$, by using the Barnett effect measurement technique at low temperatures. The Barnett effect is a phenomenon in which magnetization is induced by mechanical rotation through the coupling between rotation and total angular momentum $$J$$ of electrons. The magnetization of Ho$$_3$$Fe$$_5$$O$$_{12}$$ induced by mechanical rotation disappears at 135 K and 240 K. The temperatures correspond to the magnetization compensation temperature $$T_{rm M}$$ and the angular momentum compensation temperature $$T_{rm A}$$, respectively. Between $$T_{rm M}$$ and $$T_{rm A}$$, the magnetization flips over to be parallel against the angular momentum due to the sign change of gyromagnetic ratio. This study provides an unprecedented technique to explore the gyromagnetic properties.

Dirac surface state-modulated spin dynamics in a ferrimagnetic insulator at room temperature

This work demonstrates markedly modified spin dynamics of magnetic insulator (MI) by the spin momentum-locked Dirac surface states of the adjacent topological insulator (TI). As the Bi concentration $$x$$ is systematically tuned in 5-nm-thick (Bi$$_{x}$$Sb$$_{1-x}$$)$$_{2}$$Te$$_{3}$$ TI films, the weight of the surface relative to bulk states peaks at $$x$$ = 0.32 when the chemical potential approaches the Dirac point. At this concentration, the Gilbert damping constant of the precessing magnetization in 10-nm-thick Y$$_{3}$$Fe$$_{5}$$O$$_{12}$$ MI films in the MI/TI heterostructures is enhanced by an order of magnitude, the largest among all concentrations. In addition, the MI acquires additional strong magnetic anisotropy that favors the in-plane orientation with similar Bi concentration dependence. These extraordinary effects of the Dirac surface states distinguish TI from other materials such as heavy metals in modulating spin dynamics of the neighboring magnetic layer.

Magnetic anisotropy by Rashba spin-orbit coupling in antiferromagnetic thin films

Magnetic anisotropy in an antiferromagnet (AFM) with inversion symmetry breaking (ISB) is investigated. The magnetic anisotropy energy (MAE) resulting from the Rashba spin-orbit and $$s$$-$$d$$ type exchange interactions is determined for two different models of AFMs. The global ISB model, representing the effect of a surface, an interface, or a gating electric field, results in an easy-plane magnetic anisotropy. In contrast, for a local ISB model, i.e., for a noncentrosymmetric AFM, perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) arises. Both results differ from the ferromagnetic case, in which the result for PMA depends on the band structure and dimensionality. These MAE contributions play a key role in determining the direction of the N$'{e}$el order parameter in antiferromagnetic nanostructures, and reflect the possibility of electrical-field control of the N$'{e}$el vector.

Magnetic phase diagram of a frustrated spin ladder

Frustrated spin ladders show magnetization plateaux depending on the rung-exchange interaction and frustration defined by the ratio of first and second neighbor exchange interactions in each chain. This paper reports on its magnetic phase diagram. Using the variational matrix-product state method, we accurately determine phase boundaries. Several kinds of magnetization plateaux are induced by the frustration and the strong correlation among quasiparticles on a lattice. The appropriate description of quasiparticles and their relevant interactions are changed by a magnetic field. We find that the frustration differentiates the triplet quasiparticle from the single tone in kinetic energy.

Spin current noise of the spin Seebeck effect and spin pumping

常磁性金属と強磁性体の二層系におけるスピンゼーベック効果及びスピンポンピングによって生成された純スピン流の揺らぎを理論的に調べた。スピンの保存と非保存の過程を考慮した強磁性体/金属の単純な界面のモデルから出発し、強磁性体/金属の結合強度について2次の摂動の範囲で、界面におけるスピン流とスピン流ノイズの一般的な式を導出した。また、イットリウム鉄ガーネットと白金の二層系を想定し、スピン流とスピン流ノイズを見積もった。その結果、界面におけるスピン非保存過程によって変調された、マグノンが運ぶ有効スピンを、スピン流ノイズを用いて決定できることを示した。加えて、スピン流ノイズによって、マグノンの有効スピン、スピンポンピングにおいて発生する界面での発熱量、常磁性金属のスピンホール角に関する情報が得られることを示した。

Enhanced magneto-optical Kerr effect at Fe/insulator interfaces

Using density functional theory calculations, we have found an enhanced magneto-optical Kerr effect in Fe/insulator interfaces. The results of our study indicate that interfacial Fe atoms in the Fe films have a lowdimensional nature, which causes the following two effects: (1) The diagonal component $$sigma_{xx}$$ of the optical conductivity decreases dramatically because the hopping integral for electrons between Fe atoms is suppressed by the low dimensionality. (2) The off-diagonal component $$sigma_{xy}$$ of the optical conductivity does not change at low photon energies, but it is enhanced at photon energies around 2 eV, where we obtain enhanced orbital magnetic moments and spin-orbit correlations for the interfacial Fe atoms. A large Kerr angle develops in proportion to the ratio $$sigma_{xy}$$/$$sigma_{xx}$$. Our findings indicate an efficient way to enhance the effect of spin-orbit coupling at metal/insulator interfaces without using heavy elements.

Enhanced orbital magnetic moment in FeCo nanogranules observed by Barnett effect

The gyroscopic g factor, $$g'$$, of FeCo nanogranules embedded in a matrix of MgF$$_2$$ (FeCo-MgF$$_2$$) was determined by measuring the magnetic-field generation from a rotating sample due to the Barnett effect. The $$g'$$ value of the FeCo-MgF$$_2$$ is estimated to be 1.76 $$pm$$ 0.11. The orbital contribution to the magnetic moment in the FeCo nanogranules was found to be quite large compared with that in bulk FeCo, being consistent with a density-functional-theory calculation that shows that the orbital magnetic moment may increase at the FeCo/MgF$$_2$$ interfaces. The result suggests that the orbital magnetic moment is enhanced by symmetry breaking at the surface of the FeCo nanogranules.

この章では、磁気伝導体のスピン流と電圧を発生させる新しい概念であるスピン起電力(SMF)について概説する。SMFは、伝導スピンと磁化の間の交換相互作用を介して磁気ナノ構造に誘起され、断熱的,非断熱的、およびそれらのスピン-軌道結合等価物の様々なタイプのスピン電界が見出されている。実験では、スピン軌道結合の寄与を含め断熱的SMFが観察されているが、非断熱効果の検出はいまだ困難である。SMFは、磁化ダイナミクスの電気的検出を提供するため、通常の方法では困難であった反強磁性体のダイナミクスを検出することができるなど様々な応用につながると期待される。

Theory of the spin Peltier effect

常磁性金属と強磁性絶縁体の接合系におけるスピンペルチェ効果の微視的理論を非平衡グリーン関数法に基いて構築した。温度勾配とスピン蓄積によって生成されるスピン流と熱流を、常磁性金属と強磁性絶縁体のスピン帯磁率を用いて定式化した。また、スピン流と熱流がオンサーガーの相反関係を満たすことを確認した。このように導いたスピン流と熱流の式を用いて、常磁性金属から強磁性絶縁体へのスピンを介した熱流注入に伴う、接合界面における発熱量と吸熱量を見積もった。

Spin current generation using a surface acoustic wave generated via spin-rotation coupling

We demonstrate the generation of alternating spin current (SC) via spin-rotation coupling (SRC) using a surface acoustic wave (SAW) in a Cu film. Ferromagnetic resonance caused by injecting SAWs was observed in a Ni-Fe film attached to a Cu film, with the resonance further found to be suppressed through the insertion of a SiO$$_{2}$$ film into the interface. The intensity of the resonance depended on the angle between the wave vector of the SAW and the magnetization of the Ni-Fe film. This angular dependence is explicable in terms of the presence of spin transfer torque from a SC generated via SRC.

Theory of spin hydrodynamic generation

流体運動によるスピン流生成現象を理論的に調べた。量子運動論的理論に基いて流体の渦度と結合するスピン拡散方程式を導き、層流及び乱流の渦度勾配からスピン流が生成されることを示した。また、生成されたスピン流は逆スピンホール電圧の測定から検出されることと、層流及び乱流における電圧が、それぞれ流速及び流速の二乗に比例するという理論予測を示した。本研究は、流体スピントロニクスという分野を切り拓くと期待される。

New p- and n-type ferromagnetic semiconductors; Cr-doped BaZn$$_{2}$$As$$_{2}$$

We find new ferromagnetic semiconductors, Cr-doped BaZn$$_{2}$$As$$_{2}$$, by employing a combined method of the density functional theory and the quantum Monte Carlo simulation. Due to a narrow band gap of 0.2 eV in host BaZn$$_{2}$$As$$_{2}$$ and the different hybridization of 3d orbitals of Cr impurity, the impurity bound states have been induced both below the top of valence band and above the bottom of conduction band. The long-range ferromagnetic coupling between Cr impurities is obtained with both p- and n-type carriers.

Magnetization dynamics and its scattering mechanism in thin CoFeB films with interfacial anisotropy

Studies of magnetization dynamics have incessantly facilitated the discovery of fundamentally novel physical phenomena, making steady headway in the development of magnetic and spintronics devices. The dynamics can be induced and detected electrically, offering new functionalities in advanced electronics at the nanoscale. However, its scattering mechanism is still disputed. Understanding the mechanism in thin films is especially important, because most spintronics devices are made from stacks of multilayers with nanometer thickness. The stacks are known to possess interfacial magnetic anisotropy, a central property for applications, whose influence on the dynamics remains unknown. Here, we investigate the impact of interfacial anisotropy by adopting CoFeB/MgO as a model system. Through systematic and complementary measurements of ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) on a series of thin films, we identify narrower FMR linewidths at higher temperatures. We explicitly rule out the temperature dependence of intrinsic damping as a possible cause, and it is also not expected from existing extrinsic scattering mechanisms for ferromagnets. We ascribe this observation to motional narrowing, an old concept so far neglected in the analyses of FMR spectra. The effect is confirmed to originate from interfacial anisotropy, impacting the practical technology of spin-based nanodevices up to room temperature.

Gyroscopic $$g$$ factor of rare earth metals

We develop the $$in$$ $$situ$$ magnetization measurement apparatus for observing the Barnett effect consisting of a fluxgate sensor, high speed rotor with frequencies of up to 1.5 kHz, and magnetic shield at room temperature. The effective magnetic field (Barnett field) in a sample arising from rotation magnetizes the sample and is proportional to the rotational frequency. The gyroscopic $$g$$ factor, $$g'$$, of rare earth metals, in particular, Gd, Tb and Dy were estimated to be 2.00$$pm$$0.08, 1.53$$pm$$0.17, and 1.15$$pm$$0.32, respectively, from the slopes of the rotation dependence of the Barnett field. This study provides a technique to determine the $$g'$$ factor even in samples where the spectroscopic method may not be available.

Skew scattering from correlated systems; Impurities and collective excitations in the spin Hall effect

We examine the enhancement of the spin Hall effect due to resonant skew scattering induced by electron correlations. For single-impurity scattering, local Coulomb correlations may significantly change the observed spin Hall angle. There may be additional effects because of the special atomic environment close to a surface: extra degeneracies compared to the bulk, enhanced correlations that move the relative $$d$$- or $$f$$-levels, and interference effects coming from the lower local dimension. Our results may explain the very large spin Hall angle observed in CuBi alloys. We discuss the impact on the spin Hall effect from cooperative effects, firstly in an itinerant ferromagnet where there is an anomaly near the Curie temperature originating from high-order spin fluctuations. The second case considered is a metallic spin glass, where exchange via slowly fluctuating magnetic moments may lead to the precession of an injected spin current.

Quantum spin fluctuation in a low-dimensional or frustrated magnet breaks magnetic ordering while keeping spin correlation. Such fluctuation has been a central topic in magnetism because of its relevance to high-Tc superconductivity and topological states. However, utilizing such spin states has been quite difficult. In a one-dimensional spin-1/2 chain, a particle-like excitation called a spinon is known to be responsible for spin fluctuation in a paramagnetic state. Spinons behave as a Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid at low energy, and the spin system is often called a quantum spin chain. Here we show that a quantum spin chain generates and carries spin current, which is attributed to spinon spin current. This is demonstrated by observing an anisotropic negative spin Seebeck effect along the spin chains in Sr$$_{2}$$CuO$$_{3}$$. The results show that spin current can flow even in an atomic channel owing to long-range spin fluctuation.

Spin transport in half-metallic ferromagnets

本論文では、有限温度におけるハーフメタル強磁性体のスピン伝導を理論的に調べた。サイドジャンプ機構とスキュー散乱機構から得られるスピンホール伝導度を、久保公式を用いて導出した。その結果、電子マグノン相互作用によって、マイノリティ電子スピンのバンドギャップ中に有限の状態密度が現れ、これによってスピンホール伝導度が得られることを示した。また、スピンホール伝導度が温度の$${3/2}$$乗に比例するため温度変化に敏感であること、それによってスピンホール伝導度がハーフメタル強磁性体のマイノリティスピン状態を調べる手法になりうることを提案した。
