Magnets are important for studying magnetism and are commonly used as sample environment devices of neutron scattering instruments. However, the use of magnets was prevented at the time-of-flight direct-geometry neutron spectrometer 4SEASONS in Materials and Life Science Experimental Facility (MLF) at J-PARC, because the instrument is surrounded by iron components, and it is equipped with a piece of equipment operated with magnetic bearings. In the present work, we investigate the influence of stray magnetic fields from a superconducting magnet which is shared among neutron scattering instruments in MLF. Based on the investigation, we modified 4SEASONS such that it can be used with the magnet. Finally, we successfully performed the first inelastic neutron scattering experiments with applied magnetic fields using this sample environment.

4SEASONS is a medium-resolution thermal neutron chopper spectrometer in the Materials and Life Science Experimental Facility (MLF) at J-PARC. Although 4SEASONS is routinely used for many experiments by internal and external users, upgrading and maintenance work is still underway. This paper reviews the recent improvements of the instrument.

We report recent issues that have been encountered by AMATERAS, which is a cold-neutron disk-chopper spectrometer installed at the Materials and Life Science Experimental Facility at J-PARC. After the last ICANS meeting held in 2014, AMATERAS has continued its user program. On the other hand, the spectrometer has faced several problems, such as a weak shield at the beam dump, failure of one of the chopper disks and many such problems, which we are currently investigating. Further, several instrumental improvements have been performed, such as background reduction, fixing badly designed parts and other such improvements. Our extensive experience obtained in the period of more than 7 years on one of the world's first pulse-shaping chopper spectrometers may help other researchers who are operating or planning to construct similar spectrometers.

LaOBiS$$_{2-x}$$Se$$_x$$の低エネルギーフォノンを中性子非弾性散乱によって調べた。主にBi原子の振動に関連すると思われる分散のないフラットなフォノンが、比較的低いエネルギー$$E = 6 sim 6.7$$meVに観測された。このフォノンは、S原子よりも原子質量の大きいSeをドープし格子が膨張することによってソフト化する。同時に、Seドープにより格子熱伝導率が減少する。これらの結果は、LaOBiS$$_{2-x}$$Se$$_x$$が籠状構造を持たないにもかかわらず、Bi原子のラットリングが籠状化合物のラットリングのようにフォノンを散乱しうるということを示唆しており、それが熱電特性を向上させるのに寄与していると考えられる。

J-PARC MLFにおける試料環境(SE)チームは、ユーザー実験のためのSE機器の運用や開発を行っている。メンバーは、低温マグネット、高温、高圧、ソフトマター、光照射、水素環境、$$^3$$He偏極フィルターといったサブチームに所属している。現在は、数台の冷凍機と、マグネット、高温炉、高圧実験用パリエジンバラプレス、偏極中性子実験のためのSEOPシステムが運用中で、ユーザー実験への提供、運転を行っているほか、パルス磁場システムの汎用化に向けた開発も行っている。またJ-PARC研究棟では、レオメーター、ガス蒸気吸着量測定装置などのソフトマター研究に必要な機器類も整備している。

The magnetic structure and spin wave excitations in the quasi-square-lattice layered perovskite compound La$$_5$$Mo$$_4$$O$$_{16}$$ were studied by a combination of neutron diffraction and inelastic neutron scattering techniques using polycrystalline sample. Neutron powder diffraction refinement revealed that the magnetic structure is ferrimagnetic in the $$ab$$ plane with antiferromagnetic stacking along the $$c$$-axis. The inelastic neutron scattering results display strong easy-axis magnetic anisotropy along the $$c$$-axis due to the spin-orbit interaction in Mo ions. The model Hamiltonian consisting of in-plane anisotropic exchange interactions, the interlayer exchange interaction, and easy-axis single-ion anisotropy can explain our inelastic neutron scattering data well. Strong Ising-like anisotropy and weak interlayer coupling compared with the intralayer exchange interaction can explain both the high-temperature magnetoresistance and long-time magnetization decay recently observed in La$$_5$$Mo$$_4$$O$$_{16}$$.

$$^{98}$$Mo($$n,gamma$$)$$^{99}$$Mo反応で生成する$$^{99}$$Moから高放射能濃度の$$^{rm 99m}$$Tc溶液を得る方法として、$$^{99}$$Mo/$$^{rm 99m}$$Tcのアルカリ溶液からの$$^{rm 99m}$$TcのMEKによる溶媒抽出、塩基性アルミナカラムによる精製、酸性アルミナカラムによる吸着、溶離により$$^{99}$$Tc溶液を製品とする方法を提案した。本研究では、その基礎的検討として、$$^{rm 99m}$$Tcの放射能として2.5$$sim$$36.7TBqに相当する量の非放射性Reを代替元素として用い、Reの酸性アルミナカラムへの吸着およびその溶離特性について調べた。その結果、本試験条件のRe量において、短時間の操作時間で高い回収率を示し、JMTRで生成する15TBq規模での高濃度$$^{rm 99m}$$Tcの製造でも、酸性アルミナカラムは十分適用可能であることが明らかになった。

4SEASONS ($textit{SIKI}$) is one of the three chopper spectrometers operating in MLF at J-PARC, and covers thermal neutron region ($$10^0$$ - $$10^2$$ meV) with relaxed resolution and high flux. The repetition rate multiplication by the Fermi chopper on this short length (18 m between the source and the sample) spectrometer enables wide-band multiple-incident-energy (multi-$$E_mathrm{i}$$) measurements, which proved to be useful in observing hierarchical structures in excitations over a large energy scale. On the other hand, the upgrading work of the spectrometer has been continued since the first inelastic scattering experiment in 2009. For examples, we took several measures to suppress background, installed new detectors recently, and are developing a new Fermi chopper now. In the presentation, we show examples of scientific outputs from the spectrometer which benefit from the multi-$$E_mathrm{i}$$ measurements, and recent or planned upgrades of the instrument.

In the neutron scattering facility, sample environment is one of the important factor. In Materials and Life Science Experimental Facility (MLF) of J-PARC, sample environment team has been officially organized with succeeding the previous ad hoc sample environment team, aiming to measure safety on sample environment in MLF comprehensively and to perform efficient user support in sample environment. In MLF, each beamline (BL) has its own sample environment equipment that is dedicated for the instrument, while some pieces of BL-common sample environment equipment are prepared by the sample environment team. MLF users can also carry in their own equipment or devices for their experiment. All the equipment and devices are allowed to be introduced after passing the safety examination in MLF.


X-ray absorption spectroscopy in the heavy Fermion compound $$alpha$$-YbAlB$$_4$$ at high magnetic fields

$$alpha$$-YbAlB$$_4$$ shows strong valence fluctuation as well as heavy fermion behavior at low temperatures. It has been theoretically suggested that the quantum criticality owing to the valence fluctuation found in Yb ions plays an important role in the peculiar properties of this material. In this work, we measured the X-ray absorption spectra (XAS) and X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) at the L3 edge of Yb ions in high magnetic fields of up to 40 T. It is found that the XAS are almost independent of the magnetic field at 2 K, which proves that there is no significant valence change in this field range. The XMCD spectrum exhibits a distinct negative peak at the low-energy side of the L3 edge as well as the main positive peak near the white line. The negative XMCD peak is attributed to the quadrupole transition between the 2p and 4f states, and gives us microscopic information on the 4f state. This finding supports the recent theoretical proposal that $$|J_Z=pm5/2rangle$$ is the ground state of the localized Yb magnetic moment, where $$J_Z$$ is the z-component of the total angular momentum of Yb$$^{3+}$$.
