Although considerable progress has been made in the theoretical understanding of the low-dimensional frustrated quantum magnets, experimental realizations of a well-established scaling analysis are still scarce. This is particularly true for the two-dimensional antiferromagnetic triangular lattices. Owing to the small exchange strength, the newly discovered compound Na$$_{2}$$BaCo(PO$$_{4}$$)$$_{2}$$ provides a rare opportunity for clarifying the quantum criticality in an ideal triangular lattice with quantum spin S=1/2. In addition to the establishment of the complete phase diagrams, the spin Hamiltonian with a negligible interplane interaction has been determined through the spin wave dispersion in the polarized state, which is consistent with the observation of a two-dimensional quantum critical point with the Bose-Einstein condensation of diluted free bosons.

異なる粒径のマイクロプラスチックを淡水性の真菌である${it Acremonium strictum}$ KR21-2株とともに培養し、マイクロプラスチック表面にバイオフィルムを形成させた。それらの物理化学的特性を調べた結果、バイオフィルムによる被覆により表面への重金属元素の吸着容量が高くなり、その程度はマイクロプラスチックの粒径に関係していることが明らかとなった。このことは、マイクロプラスチックがバイオフィルム形成を通じて環境中における重金属の重要なキャリアとなり得ることを示している。

Fine structure in the $$alpha$$ decay of $$^{223}$$U was observed in the fusion-evaporation reaction $$^{187}$$Re($$^{40}$$Ar,p3n) by using fast digital pulse processing technique. Two $$alpha$$-decay branches of $$^{223}$$U feeding the ground state and 244 keV excited state of $$^{219}$$Th were identified by establishing the decay chain $$^{223}$$U$$rightarrow$$$$^{219}$$Th$$rightarrow$$$$^{215}$$Ra$$rightarrow$$$$^{211}$$Rn. The $$alpha$$-particle energy for the ground-state to ground-state transition of $$^{223}$$U was determined to be 8993(17) keV, 213 keV higher than the previous value, the half-life was updated to be 62$$^{+14}_{-10} mu$$s. Evolution of nuclear structure for $$N$$=131 even-$$Z$$ isotones from Po to U was discussed in the frameworks of nuclear mass and reduced $$alpha$$-decay width, a weakening octupole deformation in the ground state of $$^{223}$$U relative to its lighter isotones $$^{219}$$Ra and $$^{211}$$Th was suggested.

Mn酸化物の多くは微生物起源であり、Csを吸着することが知られている。本研究では、微生物起源Mn酸化物形成時に環境中の微量元素が取り込まれることによるMn酸化物の構造変化とCsの吸着挙動の関係を調べた。微生物起源Mn酸化物が金属イオン(Zn, Ni等)を取り込んで形成すると、取り込まれた金属イオンはpHが低下すると溶出し、Mn酸化物に空孔が生じる。この空孔がCsの吸着サイトとなることがわかった。

As a generic property, all substances transfer heat through microscopic collisions of constituent particles. A solid conducts heat through both transverse and longitudinal acoustic phonons, but a liquid employs only longitudinal vibrations. As a result, a solid is usually thermally more conductive than a liquid. In canonical viewpoints, such a difference also serves as the dynamic signature distinguishing a solid from a liquid. Here, we report liquid-like thermal conduction observed in the crystalline AgCrSe$$_{2}$$. The transverse acoustic phonons are completely suppressed by the ultrafast dynamic disorder while the longitudinal acoustic phonons are strongly scattered but survive, and are thus responsible for the intrinsically ultralow thermal conductivity. This scenario is applicable to a wide variety of layered compounds with heavy intercalants in the van der Waals gaps, manifesting a broad implication on suppressing thermal conduction. These microscopic insights might reshape the fundamental understanding on thermal transport properties of matter and open up a general opportunity to optimize performances of thermoelectrics.

本研究では、2種類のMn酸化物(トドロカイトとバーネサイト)が持つCs保持能を評価した。トドロカイトには、Csの吸着選択性がバーネサイトよりも高いサイトがあることがわかった。Cs初期濃度10$$^{-9}$$mol/Lで吸着させた後、吸着したCsを1M NaClとNH$$_{4}$$Clで脱離させたところ、約34%のCsが脱離せずにトドロカイトに残った。この値はバーネサイトに残ったCsの割合よりもずっと多かった。これらの結果は、トドロカイトが土壌中の放射性Csの固定に寄与することを強く示唆する。

微生物細胞には希土類に対する高い吸着能がある。しかし、環境中での希土類の移行挙動に微生物がどのように影響するのかはわかっていない。本研究では、希土類元素の化学状態に及ぼす微生物活動の影響を調べた。Mn(II)酸化菌であるAeremonium strictumとMn(II)を含む水溶液に希土類元素を入れた。Mn(II)酸化菌からCe(IV)と特異的に結合する生体分子が放出され、その結果、Mn酸化物からのCe(IV)が脱離した。この生体分子は、3価の希土類元素や鉄とは結合しなかったので、休眠細胞から放出されることが知られている、金属に非特異的な有機物とは異なる。

Microbial catalysis, a primary pathway for the generation of Mn oxides in most natural environments, provides potential to fabricate new materials. A microtube-type lithium manganese oxide (LMO-MT) was synthesized through a solid-state transformation using Mn-oxidizing fungus, Paraconiothyrium sp. WL-2. Compared with abiotic precursors, the lithium-ion sieve microtube (HMO-MT) showed better performance for Li+ recovery. In order to clarify the formation process of LMO-MTs, in situ high-temperature X-ray diffraction was used to compare with three synthetic references. The effects of calcination temperature on crystal phase, composition, particle size and lattice parameters of the LMO-MTs were systematically discussed. It was found that the poorly crystalline structure of biogenic precursor as well as high content of organic matter facilitated the formation of highly crystalline LMO-MTs at low temperature. The unique structural properties of LMO-MTs, including high crystallinity and small lattice constant, are attributed to the high Li$$^{+}$$ sorption capacity of HMO-MTs.

Adsorption of Cs$$^{+}$$ on biogenic birnessite was investigated and compared with (ad)sorption of other heavy metals and also with (ad)sorption on chemically synthesized birnessite. The adsorption density of Cs$$^{+}$$ on biogenic birnessite was smaller than that on chemically synthesized birnessite; however, the (ad)sorption densities of Co$$^{2+}$$ and Ni$$^{2+}$$ on biogenic birnessite were larger than on chemically synthesized birnessite. These phenomena can be interpreted by considering the distinctive nano-structure of biogenic birnessite, which is not only poorly crystalline and includes organic matter but also according to EXAFS contains a greater proportion of vacant central metal sites than is found in synthetic birnessite. Adsorbed Cs$$^{+}$$ ions on both birnessites were mainly in the form of outer sphere complexes, which cannot easily occupy vacant central metal sites in biogenic birnessite. Biogenic birnessite has a greater specific surface area and more fine pores than synthetic birnessite, but these factors do not necessarily lead to more adsorption sites for Cs$$^{+}$$ ions.

We report the discovery of a diluted magnetic semiconductor, Li(Zn,Mn)P, in which charge and spin are introduced independently via lithium off-stoichiometry and the isovalent substitution of Mn$$^{2+}$$ for Zn$$^{2+}$$, respectively. Isostructural to (Ga,Mn)As, Li(Zn,Mn)P was found to be a ${it p}$-type ferromagnetic semiconductor with excess lithium providing charge doping. First-principles calculations indicate that excess Li is favored to partially occupy the Zn site, leading to hole doping. Ferromagnetism with Curie temperature up to 34 K is achieved while the system still shows semiconducting transport behavior.

Development of negative Ce anomalies in biogenic Mn oxide; The Role of microorganism on REE mobility during the bio-oxidation of Mn$$^{2+}$$

Bio-oxidation of Mn$$^{2+}$$ is ubiquitously occurring in most aquatic and terrestrial environments, which strongly affected the migration of trace elements as well as radionuclides under environmental condition. In the present work, sorption of REEs during bio-oxidation and precipitation of Mn$$^{2+}$$ was investigated using Acremonium sp. strain KR21-2 under neutral pH conditions. The sorption ratio of REE decreased with increasing citrate concentration, but more negative Ce anomaly was observed for the sample without citrate, and in citrate concentration higher than 0.4 mM. In both cases, the oxidation of Mn$$^{2+}$$ was suppressed. The analysis of HPLC showed that additional organic molecules were released from hyphae when Mn$$^{2+}$$ bio-oxidation was suppressed. This observation suggests that, microbe activity strongly influences oxidation state as well as chemical speciation of Ce, which consequently affect the migration of Ce in waters system.
