In this paper, recent developments are briefly presented.

Quantum critical behavior of the hyperkagome magnet Mn$$_3$$CoSi

$$beta$$-Mn-type family alloys Mn$$_3$$$$TX$$ have three-dimensional antiferromagnetic (AFM) corner-shared triangular network. The antiferromagnet Mn$$_3$$RhSi shows magnetic short-range order (SRO) over a wide temperature range of approximately 500 K above the N$'{e}$el temperature $$T_{rm N}$$ = 190 K. Mn$$_3$$CoSi has the smallest lattice parameter and the lowest $$T_{rm N}$$ in the family compounds. The quantum critical point (QCP) from AFM to the quantum paramagnetic state is expected near a cubic lattice parameter of 6.15 $AA. Although $T_N$$ of Mn$$_3$$CoSi is only 140 K, quantum critical behavior is observed in Mn$$_3$$CoSi as the enhancement of the electronic specific heat coefficient $$gamma$$. We study how the magnetic SRO appears in Mn$$_3$$CoSi by using neutron scattering, $$mu$$SR, and physical property measurements. The experimental results show that the neutron scattering intensity of the magnetic SRO does not change much regardless of the suppressed magnetic moment in the long-range magnetic ordered state compared to those of Mn$$_3$$RhSi. The initial asymmetry drop ratio of $$mu$$SR above $$T_{rm N}$$ becomes small, and the magnetic SRO temperature $$T_{SRO}$$ is suppressed to 240 K. The results suggest that the Mn$$_3$$CoSi is close to the QCP in the Mn$$_3$$$$TX$$ system.

最近発見された塩化ナトリウムの超水和物(NaCl$$cdot$$ 13H(D)$$_{2}$$O)の構造を1.7GPa, 298Kでのその場単結晶中性子回折によって決定した。この物質は大きな水素結合ネットワークを持ち、いくつかの水分子は分岐水素結合や5配位水分子のような歪んだ結合の特徴を持つ。水素結合ネットワークは、ネットワークトポロジーと水素結合の無秩序性という点で、氷VIと類似している。擬似対称性によって接続されたネットワークの構成要素を区別しなければ、このハイドレートの全体的なネットワーク構造は、氷VIのネットワーク構造に対応する小さな構造単位に分解することで表現できる。この水素結合ネットワークは、既知の塩水和物とは対照的に、水分子の配向の乱れを含んでいる。ここでは、イオン種を含む水素結合ネットワークに関するさらなる洞察のための例を示す。

In structural biology, peptide bonds, fundamental linkages between hundreds of amino acids, of which a protein molecule is composed, have been commonly treated as a plane structure just as Linus Pauling et al. proposed. In this paper, a site-specific peptide bond relaxation mechanism by deuterons whose localization has been suggested by neutron crystallography is proposed. A comprehensive study using X-ray and neutron diffraction and $$^{15}$$N chemical shifts of individual amide nitrogen atoms within the same peptide bond strongly suggests the relaxation of the electronic resonance structure because of site-specific modulation by protons/deuterons localized on the electron orbital of the carbonyl oxygen.

Atomic reconstruction induced by uniaxial stress in MnP

圧力は、電子状態と原子配列の両方に作用し、物性を劇的に変化させる可能性を持つ。リン化マンガンMnPでは、約8GPaの等方圧力下において、Mn化合物で初めて、超伝導状態が観測された。本研究では、一軸応力がMnPの磁性および結晶構造に及ぼす影響を調査した。磁化測定と中性子回折実験により、0.04GPaという極めて低い一軸応力で、不可逆的な磁化応答が観測され、同時に、MnP型構造に特有の擬回転対称性を満たす結晶ドメインが誘起されることがわかった。不可逆的な磁化応答は、誘起された新たなドメインの構造により説明できることが判明した。一軸応力によって誘起される結晶ドメインに関する研究は過去に例がなく、我々はこの新現象を「原子再構成(AR)」と名付けることとした。我々は、AR現象に対する理解の深化は、誘電性、弾性、電気伝導、磁性、超伝導を含む物質の異方性を制御する結晶ドメイン工学の創出につながると期待している。

Magnetic ordering and structural phase transitions of Nd$$_{3}$$$$T$$$$_{4}$$Sn$$_{13}$$ ($$T$$ = Rh and Ir)

Synchrotron X-ray diffraction study revealed that Nd$$_{3}$$$$T$$$$_{4}$$Sn$$_{13}$$ ($$T$$ = Rh and Ir) undergo structural phase transitions characterized by the wave vector $$q$$$$_{rm L}$$=(1/2,1/2,0). Neutron diffraction study revealed antiferromagnetic ordering below $$T$$$$_{rm N}$$ = 1.65 and 1.42 K for Nd$$_{3}$$Rh$$_{4}$$Sn$$_{13}$$ and Nd$$_{3}$$Ir$$_{4}$$Sn$$_{13}$$, respectively, which is similar to that previously reported for Nd$$_{3}$$Co$$_{4}$$Sn$$_{13}$$. These compounds show a magnetic susceptibility saturation behavior below approximately 3 K. The results indicate emergence of anomalous electronic correlation in Nd$$_{3}$$$$T$$$$_{4}$$Sn$$_{13}$$ ($$T$$ = Co, Rh, and Ir) above $$T$$$$_{rm N}$$.

Automated pulsed magnet system for neutron diffraction experiments at the Materials and Life Science Experimental Facility in J-PARC

J-PARC物質・生命科学実験施設において、ユーザーが使いやすく、かつ新しい試料環境装置として35Tまで発生可能なパルスマグネットシステムを開発した。これは、真空チャンバー、GM冷凍機、小型ソレノイドコイルを挿入したSUS管で構成されている。コイルは液体窒素自動供給装置から供給される液体窒素で冷却され、試料はGM冷凍機で冷却される。この組み合わせにより、ユーザー操作のための自動運転可能な強磁場回折測定が容易になる。散乱角は最大42度で、これまでの装置よりも大幅に広くなっている。中性子回折実験は、マルチフェロイック物質(TbMnO$$_{3}$$)を用いて、回折ピークの磁場依存性が明確に観察された。このようにユーザープログラム用の実用的な強磁場回折のための、新しいパルスマグネットシステムが確立された。

The fifth version of Japanese Evaluated Nuclear Data Library, JENDL-5, was developed. JENDL-5 aimed to meet a variety of needs not only from nuclear reactors but also from other applications such as accelerators. Most of the JENDL special purpose files published so far were integrated into JENDL-5 with revisions. JENDL-5 consists of 11 sublibraries: (1) Neutron, (2) Thermal scattering law, (3) Fission product yield, (4) Decay data, (5) Proton, (6) Deuteron, (7) Alpha-particle, (8) Photonuclear, (9) Photo-atomic, (10) Electro-atomic, and (11) Atomic relaxation. The neutron reaction data for a large number of nuclei in JENDL-4.0 were updated ranging from light to heavy ones, including major and minor actinides which affect nuclear reactor calculations. In addition, the number of nuclei of neutron reaction data stored in JENDL-5 was largely increased; the neutron data covered not only all of naturally existing nuclei but also their neighbor ones with half-lives longer than 1 day. JENDL-5 included the originally evaluated data of thermal scattering law and fission product yield for the first time. Light charged-particle and photon induced reaction data were also included for the first time as the JENDL general purpose file.

体内にアクチニドなどの放射性物質が取り込まれると、生体内配位子がアクチニドと化合物を生成し、体内滞留の原因となりうる。本研究では、アクチニドを体外に排出させるためのキレート剤の結合性評価を行うため、キレート剤と結合した元素の局所構造をX線吸収分光法によって解析し結合力を評価した。プルトニウム模擬元素としてジルコニウム(Zr),キレート剤として、EHBP(1-hydroxyethylidene-1,1-diphosphonate)およびDTPA (diethylenetriaminepentaacetate)を用いた。ZrはEHBPと八面体構造の錯体を形成するとともに、Zr-EHBP錯体はZr-DTPA錯体より強い結合を有することが分かった。これらの知見は、放射性元素による内部被ばく線量評価や、放射性元素を体外に取り除くための適切な除染方法の提案につながる。

We improved diamond anvil cells with a tubular frame made of Zr-based bulk metallic glass and nano-polycrystalline diamond anvils for single-crystal neutron diffraction. The thicker tubular frame was confirmed through experimentation as stably generating 4.5 GPa. Its feasibility for neutron diffraction was assessed at the Laue-TOF diffractometer at the BL18 (SENJU) beamline in the MLF J-PARC using time-resolved two-dimensional detectors covering wide solid angles. In addition to ambient-pressure measurements of NH$$_{4}$$Cl, diffraction patterns of a high-pressure phase of ice were also collected in-situ. The obtained intensities are of refinable quality sufficient for structure analysis.

$$^{149}$$Sm synchrotron-radiation-based M$"{o}$ssbauer spectroscopy was performed in Sm-based intermetallics having a cubic crystal structure, Sm$$_{3}Tr_{4}$$Ge$$_{13}$$, SmB$$_{6}$$, SmBe$$_{13}$$, and Sm$$Tr_{2}$$Al$$_{20}$$ ($$Tr$$ = transition metals). In spite of the difference of the local structure around the Sm sites, the observed M$"{o}$ssbauer spectra consist of a single line at 300 K. On the other hand, Sm L$$_{rm III}$$-edge X-ray absorption spectra consist of two components, suggesting Sm$$^{2+}$$ and Sm$$^{3+}$$ states. Difference of the number of the spectral components between the M$"{o}$ssbauer spectroscopy and X-ray absorption spectroscopy is caused by the difference of the time window in the scattering process of these measurements. Correlation between the isomer shifts in the M$"{o}$ssbauer spectroscopy and average Sm valence states estimated from the X-ray absorption spectroscopy exhibits a linear correlation.

FeSi is a nonmagnetic narrow-gap insulator, exhibiting peculiar charge and spin dynamics beyond a simple band structure picture. Those unusual features have been attracting renewed attention from topological aspects. Although the surface conduction was demonstrated according to size-dependent resistivity in bulk crystals, its topological characteristics and consequent electromagnetic responses remain elusive. Here, we demonstrate an inherent surface ferromagnetic-metal state of FeSi thin films and its strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC) properties through multiple characterizations of two-dimensional conductance, magnetization, and spintronic functionality. Terminated covalent bonding orbitals constitute the polar surface state with momentum-dependent spin textures due to Rashba-type spin splitting, as corroborated by unidirectional magnetoresistance measurements and first-principles calculations. As a consequence of the spin-momentum locking, nonequilibrium spin accumulation causes magnetization switching. These surface properties are closely related to the Zak phase of the bulk band topology. Our findings propose another route to explore noble metal-free materials for SOC-based spin manipulation.

Dynamics of water in a catalyst layer of a fuel cell by quasielastic neutron scattering

The catalyst layer (CL) in polymer electrolyte fuel cells (PEFCs) plays a critical role in the performance of a PEFC. In this study, we investigate the water dynamics in the CL using quasielastic neutron scattering (QENS) and small-angle neutron scattering. The temperature dependence of the mean square displacement $$<$$u$$^{2}$$$$>$$ shows that the freezing of water does not occur at a melting temperature in the Nafion thin film of the CL, suggesting that the water is confined in a smaller region than $$sim$$15 ${AA}$. The QENS measurements established three kinds of water in the CL: immobile water tightly connected to a sulfonic group, water in a fast mode assigned to free diffusion restricted in a sphere, and water in a slow mode described by a jump diffusion model. Assuming that these three modes were independent, the number of water molecules in each mode was estimated. On discussing the structure and dynamics elucidated in the study, we finally conclude that the coupled model of the fast and slow modes is plausible for describing the diffusion of water confined in the thin Nafion film of the CL.

Charge-density-wave order and multiple magnetic transitions in divalent europium compound EuAl$$_4$$

Multiple transition phenomena in divalent Eu compound EuAl$$_4$$ with the tetragonal structure were investigated via single crystal time-of-flight neutron Laue technique. At 30 K below a charge-density-wave (CDW) transition, superlattice peaks emerge near nuclear Bragg peaks described by an ordering vector $$q_{rm CDW}$$ = (0 0 $${delta}_c$$). In contrast, magnetic peaks appear at $$q_2 = ({delta}_2 {delta}_2 0)$$ with $${delta}_2$$ = 0.09 below $$T_{N1}$$ = 15.4 K, and moves to $$q_1 = ({delta}_1 0 0)$$ with $${delta}_1$$ = 0.19 below $$T_{N3}$$ =12.2 K, whereas no distinct change in the magnetic Bragg peak was detected at $$T_{N2}$$ and $$T_{N4}$$. The structural modification with $$q_{rm CDW}$$ is characterized by an absence of the superlattice peak in (0 0 $$l$$). Considering an absence of splitting in magnetic peaks along $$l$$, the structural transition is mainly ascribed to a displacement of Al ions within the tetragonal $$ab$$-plane. Complex incommensurate magnetic transitions are in stark contrast to a simple collinear commensurate structure in isovalent EuGa$$_4$$. This could stem from incompatible electronic structures with the CDW transition between two compounds.

Programmable synthesis of silver wheels

The synthesis of sandwich-shaped multinuclear silver complexes with planar penta- and tetranuclear wheel-shaped silver units and a central anion is reported, along with complete spectroscopic and structural characterization. An NMR mechanistic study reveals that silver complexes were formed in the following order: 2Ag $$rightarrow$$ 3Ag$$^{rm H2O}$$ $$rightarrow$$ 5Ag$$^{rm OH}$$ $$rightarrow$$ 4Ag$$^{rm OH}$$. The central hydroxides in 4Ag$$^{rm OH}$$ and 5Ag$$^{rm OH}$$ exhibit exotic physical properties due to the confined environment inside the complex. The size of these silver wheels can be tuned by changing the central anion or extracting/adding one silver atom. This study provides the facile way to synthesize discrete wheel-shaped multinuclear silver complexes and provides valuable insights into the dynamics of the self-assembly process.

Correlated Li-ion migration in the superionic conductor Li$$_{10}$$GeP$$_{2}$$S$$_{12}$$

Herein, we studied the crystalline compound Li$$_{10}$$GeP$$_{2}$$S$$_{12}$$ with the largest Li-ion conductivity thus far via a novel route based on a combination of single-crystal neutron diffraction experiments at low temperature and first-principles calculations, and found that a correlated migration of the densely packed Li ions governs the overall Li-ion conduction. The correlated migration mechanism provides us with guidelines on how to design efficient superionic conductors for more efficient batteries.

Absence of ferromagnetism in MnBi$$_2$$Te$$_4$$/Bi$$_2$$Te$$_3$$ down to 6 K

We successfully fabricated a MnBi$$_2$$Te$$_4$$/Bi$$_2$$Te$$_3$$ heterostructure by incorporating Mn and Te inside the topmost quintuple layer of Bi$$_2$$Te$$_3$$, as unambiguously confirmed by LEED I-V scanning transmission electron microscopy measurements. The surface-state Dirac cone of the heterostructure showed little change compared to that of the pristine Bi$$_2$$Te$$_3$$ and X-ray magnetic circular dichroism measurements showed that the system was paramagnetic down to 5.6 K. These results are in contrast to the previous works on related materials that showed magnetic order around 10 K as well as theoretical predictions and suggests the intricacy of the magnetic properties of two-dimensional van der Waals magnets.

Radioactivity and radionuclides in deciduous teeth formed before the Fukushima-Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident

The Fukushima-Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (FNPP) accident released substantial amounts of radionuclides into the environment. We collected 4,957 deciduous teeth, from children living in Fukushima and reference prefectures. Radioactivity was detected in most of the teeth examined and was attributed to the presence of natural radionuclides, including $$^{40}$$K and daughter nuclides in $$^{238}$$U and $$^{232}$$Th series. Additionally, artificial radionuclides, $$^{90}$$Sr and $$^{137}$$Cs, were detected in the teeth obtained from children from Fukushima and the reference prefectures. However, these radionuclides were not believed to have originated from the FNPP accident. Because the teeth examined in the present study were formed before the FNPP accident occurred, the aforementioned findings may serve as important control data for future studies regarding the radioactivity of teeth formed after the FNPP accident.

To properly decommission the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant, the contamination levels and mechanisms for the concrete structures must be assessed. In this review, we outline the results of this study and present the objectives of a future study called "Quantitative Evaluation of Contamination in Reinforced Concrete Members of Fukushima Daiichi NPP Buildings Considering the Actual Environment Histories for Legitimate Treatments", which will run from October 2020 to March 2023. The experimental results from the first project indicate that concrete carbonation, Ca leaching, and drying conditions affected the adsorption of Cs and Sr and their penetration depths. Additionally, the studies showed that $$alpha$$-nuclides precipitated on the surface of the samples because of the high pH of concrete. A reaction transfer model was developed to further assess the adsorption characteristics of Cs and Sr in carbonated cement paste and concrete aggregates. The model used real concrete characteristics from the FDNPP materials and historical boundary conditions at the site, including radionuclide concentrations and penetration profiles within the turbine pit wall. The water suction by dried concrete was evaluated with the consideration of the structure change of cement hydrates by X-ray CR and $$^{1}$$H-NMR relaxometry. In the new project, the studies will also include concrete cracks for more realistic contamination estimations.

Magnetically induced electric polarization in Ba$$_{3}$$Fe$$_{2}$$O$$_{5}$$Cl$$_{2}$$ with tunable direction in three dimensions

The correlation between magnetism and electric polarization in a chiral insulating magnet Ba$$_{3}$$Fe$$_{2}$$O$$_{5}$$Cl$$_{2}$$ has been investigated. The temperature dependence of magnetic susceptibility shows an anomaly at 564 K, suggesting the onset of antiferromagnetic order of Fe$$^{3+}$$ moments. Electric polarization appears in a magnetic field below TN due to the spin-direction-dependent metal-ligand hybridization. The direction of the electric polarization can be controlled in three-dimensional space by changing the direction of an external magnetic field. This compound also shows an antiferromagnetic-to-weak-ferromagnetic transition accompanied by a structural phase transition at 140 K.
