Acoustically driven magnon-phonon coupling in a layered antiferromagnet

Harnessing the causal relationships between mechanical and magnetic properties of van der Waals materials presents a wealth of untapped opportunity for scientific and technological advancement, from precision sensing to novel memories. This can, however, only be exploited if the means exist to efficiently interface with the magnetoelastic interaction. Here, we demonstrate acoustically-driven spin-wave resonance in a crystalline antiferromagnet, chromium trichloride, via surface acoustic wave irradiation. The resulting magnon-phonon coupling is found to depend strongly on sample temperature and external magnetic field orientation, and displays a high sensitivity to extremely weak magnetic anisotropy fields in the few mT range. Our work demonstrates a natural pairing between power-efficient strain-wave technology and the excellent mechanical properties of van der Waals materials, representing a foothold towards widespread future adoption of dynamic magneto-acoustics.

Valley-selective phonon-magnon scattering in magnetoelastic superlattices

Phonons and magnons are engineered by periodic potential landscapes in phononic and magnonic crystals, and their combined studies may enable valley phonon transport tunable by the magnetic field. Through nonreciprocal surface acoustic wave transmission, we demonstrate valley-selective phonon-magnon scattering in magnetoelastic superlattices. The lattice symmetry and the out-of-plane magnetization component control the sign of nonreciprocity. The phonons in the valleys play a crucial role in generating nonreciprocal transmission by inducing helical strains that couple with the magnons. The transmission spectra show a nonreciprocity peak near a transmission gap, matching the phononic band structure. Our results open the way for manipulating valley phonon transport through periodically varying magnon-phonon coupling.

Coherent coupling in magnon based hybrid system has many potential applications in quantum information processing. Magnons can propagate in magnetically ordered materials without any motion of electrons, offering a unique method to build low-power-consumption devices and information channels free of heat dissipation. In this article, we demonstrate the coherent propagation of hybridized modes between spin waves and Love surface acoustic waves in a multiferroic BiFeO$$_{3}$$ and ferromagnetic La$$_{0.67}$$Sr$$_{0.33}$$MnO$$_{3}$$ based heterostructure. The magneto-elastic coupling enables a giant enhancement of strength of the hybridized mode by a factor of 26 compared to that of the pure spin waves. A short wavelength down to 250 nm is demonstrated for the hybridized mode, which is desirable for nanoscale acousto-magnonic applications. Our combined experimental and theoretical analyses represent an important step towards the coherent control in hybrid magnonics, which may inspire the study of magnon-phonon hybrid systems for coherent information processing and manipulation.

Nonlinear magnon polaritons

We experimentally and theoretically demonstrate that nonlinear spin-wave interactions suppress the hybrid magnon-photon quasiparticle or "magnon polariton" in microwave spectra of an yttrium iron garnet film detected by an on-chip split-ring resonator. We observe a strong coupling between the Kittel and microwave cavity modes in terms of an avoided crossing as a function of magnetic fields at low microwave input powers, but a complete closing of the gap at high powers. The experimental results are well explained by a theoretical model including the three-magnon decay of the Kittel magnon into spin waves. The gap closure originates from the saturation of the ferromagnetic resonance above the Suhl instability threshold by a coherent back reaction from the spin waves.

Magnetostatic field induced by mechanical deformations

We derive a general expression for the magnetostatic field generated by mechanical deformations to a ferromagnetic material in the continuum description. Linearization with respect to the displacement vector is shown to be well defined. To demonstrate the use of the formulation, we discuss two examples. Firstly, a complete derivation of the magneto-rotation coupling for a uniformly magnetized film is given. Secondly, the lowest asymmetric mode of Lamb waves propagating through a magnetic vortex is shown to induce in-plane magnetostatic field localized around the vortex core.

二酸化炭素地中貯留のキーマテリアルである非晶質炭酸マグネシウムの構造とその特性

二酸化炭素の地中貯蔵法として鉱物トラップが注目されている。二酸化炭素を含んだ地下水と玄武岩を反応させてマグネサイトを形成させる。形成される炭酸マグネシウム相は多様に変化するが、そのすべてがアモルファス炭酸マグネシウムを経るためその構造を明らかにすることを試みた。高エネルギーX線回折を用いた2体相関分布関数からアモルファス炭酸マグネシウムはハイドロマグネサイトと同様の構造を持つことが明らかとなり、長期的にも安定な構造であることからマグネシウムを含んだ炭酸塩化は二酸化炭素貯留技術として安全な隔離法と言える。

Interaction between surface acoustic waves and spin waves in a ferromagnetic thin film

We present a theoretical description of magnon-phonon interactions in a multi-layer structure containing a ferromagnetic thin film. The formalism is applicable to an arbitrary direction of external magnetic field and various types of acoustic waves including Rayleigh and Love surface modes. A particular attention is paid to the spatial profile of the acoustic wave modes and analytical expressions for the effective coupling coefficients are derived taking into account the degree of mode profile overlap between spin waves and acoustic waves. The results are applied to reproduce a strongly anisotropic and non-reciprocal linewidth of acoustic ferromagnetic resonance reported in a recent experiment.

Magnons can transfer information in metals and insulators without Joule heating, and therefore are promising for low-power computation. The on-chip magnonics however suffers from high losses due to limited magnon decay length. In metallic thin films, it is typically on the tens of micrometre length scale. Here, we demonstrate an ultra-long magnon decay length of up to one millimetre in multiferroic/ferromagnetic BiFeO$$_{3}$$(BFO)/La$$_{0.67}$$Sr$$_{0.33}$$MnO$$_{3}$$ (LSMO) heterostructures at room temperature. This decay length is attributed to a magnon-phonon hybridization and is more than two orders of magnitude longer than that of bare metallic LSMO. The long-distance modes have high group velocities of 2.5 km$$^{-1}$$ as detected by time-resolved Brillouin light scattering. Numerical simulations suggest that magnetoelastic coupling via the BFO/LSMO interface hybridizes phonons in BFO with magnons in LSMO. Our results provide a solution to the long-standing issue on magnon decay lengths in metallic magnets and advance the bourgeoning field of hybrid magnonics.

Non-reciprocal pumping of surface acoustic waves by spin wave resonance

We predict that surface acoustic waves are generated preferentially in one direction in a heterostructure of a thin magnetic film on a non-magnetic substrate. The non-reciprocity arises from magneto-elastic coupling and magneto-rotation coupling, the former being dominant for YIG/GGG heterostructures. For YIG films thinner than about 100 nm, the surface acoustic wave amplitude is nearly unidirectional at certain angles of the in-plane equilibrium magnetisation. We compute the full magnetic field dependence of the effect for a selected device.

One of the most fundamental forms of magnon-phonon-interaction is an intrinsic property of magnetic materials, the "magnetoelastic coupling." This particular form of interaction has been the basis for describing magnetic materials and their strain related applications, where strain induces changes of internal magnetic fields. Different from the magnetoelastic coupling, more than 40 years ago, it was proposed that surface acoustic waves may induce surface magnons via rotational motion of the lattice in anisotropic magnets. However, a signature of this magnon-phonon coupling mechanism, termed magneto-rotation coupling, has been elusive. Here, we report the first observation and theoretical framework of the magneto-rotation coupling in a perpendicular anisotropic ultra-thin lim Ta/CoFeB/MgO, which consequently induces nonreciprocal acoustic wave attenuation with an unprecedented ratio up to 100% rectification at a theoretically predicted optimized condition. Our work not only experimentally demonstrates a fundamentally new path for investigating magnon-phonon coupling, but also justifies the feasibility of the magneto-rotation coupling based application.

Acoustic ferromagnetic resonance and spin pumping induced by surface acoustic waves

Voltage induced magnetization dynamics of magnetic thin films is a valuable tool to study anisotropic fields, exchange couplings, magnetization damping and spin pumping mechanism. A particularly well established technique is the ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) generated by the coupling of microwave photons and magneti- zation eigenmodes in the GHz range. Here we review the basic concepts of the so-called acoustic ferromagnetic resonance technique (a-FMR) induced by the coupling of surface acoustic waves (SAW) and magnetization of thin films. Interestingly, additional to the benefits of the microwave excited FMR technique, the coupling be- tween SAW and magnetization also offers fertile ground to study magnon-phonon and spin rotation couplings. We describe the in-plane magnetic field angle dependence of the a-FMR by measuring the absorption / trans- mission of SAW and the attenuation of SAW in the presence of rotational motion of the lattice, and show the consequent generation of spin current by acoustic spin pumping.

The emerging field of magnonics employs spin waves and their quanta, magnons, to implement wave-based computing on the micro- and nanoscales. Multi-frequency magnon networks would allow for parallel data processing within single logic elements whereas this is not the case with conventional transistor-based electric logic. However, a lack of experimental proven solutions to efficiently combine and separate magnons of different frequencies has impeded the intensive use of this concept. In this Letter, the experimental realization of a spin-wave demultiplexer enabling frequency-dependent separation of magnetic signals in the GHz range is demonstrated. The device is based on two-dimensional magnon transport in the form of spin-wave beams in unpatterned magnetic films. The intrinsic frequency-dependence of the beam direction is exploited to realize a passive functioning obviating an external control and additional power consumption. This approach paves the way to magnonic multiplexing circuits enabling simultaneous information transport and processing.

We propose a topological characterization of Hamiltonians describing classical waves. Applying it to the magnetostatic surface spin waves that are important in spintronics applications, we settle the speculation over their topological origin. For a class of classical systems that includes spin waves driven by dipole-dipole interactions, we show that the topology is characterized by vortex lines in the Brillouin zone in such a way that the symplectic structure of Hamiltonian mechanics plays an essential role. We define winding numbers around these vortex lines and identify them to be the bulk topological invariants for a class of semimetals. Exploiting the bulk-edge correspondence appropriately reformulated for these classical waves, we predict that surface modes appear but not in a gap of the bulk frequency spectrum. This feature, consistent with the magnetostatic surface spin waves, indicates a broader realm of topological phases of matter beyond spectrally gapped ones.

Spin caloric effects in antiferromagnets assisted by an external spin current

反強磁性体における新奇スピン熱現象開拓のため、本稿では印可されたスピン流の存在下における熱励起されたマグノンの性質を調べる。まずスピン蓄積による熱流の生成、すなわちスピンペルチエ効果が立方晶、あるいは一軸結晶の対称性を持つ反強磁性体で生じることを予言する。この効果はマグノン緩和時間がスピン流によってマグノンのスピン分極方向に対する依存性を獲得することに由来する。このペルチエ効果は反強磁性磁壁の運動を駆動し、その駆動力は物質の温度が上昇するにつれて大きくなる。またスピン流がマグノンスピンゼーベック効果を誘起することも示す。

Spin transfer torques and spin-dependent transport in a metallic F/AF/N tunneling junction

We study spin-dependent electron transport through a ferromagnetic-antiferromagnetic-normal metal tunneling junction, in the absence of spin-orbit coupling. We derive microscopic formulas for various types of spin torque acting on the antiferromagnet as well as for charge and spin currents flowing through the junction. The obtained results are applicable in the limit of slow magnetization dynamics. We identify a parameter regime in which an unconventional damping-like torque can become comparable in magnitude to the conventional Slonczewski's torque familiar from ferromagnets. Moreover, we show that the antiferromagnetic sublattice structure opens up a channel of electron transport which does not have a ferromagnetic analog and that this mechanism leads to a pronounced field-like torque. Both charge conductance and spin current transmission through the junction depend on the relative orientation of the ferromagnetic and the antiferromagnetic order parameters.

Spin colossal magnetoresistance in an antiferromagnetic insulator

巨大磁気抵抗とは導体絶縁体相転移の近傍で磁場により電気抵抗が大幅に変化する現象を指す。これは磁気構造と電気伝導の強い相関に由来し、数十年にわたって盛んに研究されてきた。本稿では、反強磁性絶縁体であるCr$$_{2}$$O$$_{3}$$が室温においてスピン流についての明確な導体不導体を起こすことを報告する。スピン流透過率はネール温度近傍の14度の間で2桁変化する。このスピン流についての導体不導体転移は磁場によって制御可能であり、定温で最大500%透過率が変化し事実上のスピン流透過不透過切り替えのスイッチとなる。

Tunable sign change of spin hall magnetoresistance in Pt/NiO/YIG structures

Spin Hall magnetoresistance (SMR) has been investigated in Pt/NiO/YIG structures in a wide range of temperature and NiO thickness. The SMR shows a negative sign below a temperature that increases with the NiO thickness. This is contrary to a conventional SMR theory picture applied to the Pt/YIG bilayer, which always predicts a positive SMR. The negative SMR is found to persist even when NiO blocks the spin transmission between Pt and YIG, indicating it is governed by the spin current response of the NiO layer. We explain the negative SMR by the NiO "spin flop" coupled with YIG, which can be overridden at higher temperature by positive SMR contribution from YIG. This highlights the role of magnetic structure in antiferromagnets for transport of pure spin current in multilayers.

ERL実証機となるコンパクトERL(cERL)の建設準備がKEK東カウンターホールにて進められている。cERL早期運転実現のため、開発要素の多い電子銃部については実機開発の他、バックアップ及びR&D機として原子力機構及び高エネルギー加速器研究機構それぞれにおいて同時に開発を進めることとなった。現在原子力機構で先行して立上げが行われている1号機に対し、今後高エネルギー加速器研究機構にて立上げる2号機では、1号機との互換性を持たせつつも、(1)透過型光陰極の採用,(2)光陰極複数同時活性化及びその保存機能を持つ準備システムの開発,(3)電子銃の極高真空化のための真空系及び600kV絶縁セラミック管の開発・改良に力点を置き、現在設計を進めている。

Transport properties of antiferromagnetic tunneling junctions

本研究では、強磁性体-反強磁性体-常磁性金属からなるトンネル接合を非平衡グリーン関数の方法を用いて調べ、種々のスピントルクおよび電荷とスピンの伝導度に対する微視的な公式を導出する。異なるタイプのトルクの間の大小関係とそのトンネル確率依存性を発表する。またこれらのトルクが磁化の運動に及ぼす影響も議論する。さらに電荷とスピンの透過率が強磁性体と反強磁性体の秩序変数の間の角に依存することを示し、その応用可能性について議論する。
