Japan Atomic Energy Agency has been investigating groundwater chemistry to understand the influence of excavation and maintenance of underground facilities as part of the Mizunami Underground Research Laboratory (MIU) Project in Mizunami, Gifu, Japan. In this report, we compiled data of groundwater chemistry and microbiology obtained at the MIU in the fiscal year 2018. In terms of ensuring traceability of data, basic information (e.g. sampling location, sampling time, sampling method and analytical method) and methodology for quality control are described.

Hard X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy study of Pt/Y$$_{3}$$Fe$$_{5}$$O$$_{12}$$

High energy X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (HAXPES) measurements were carried out for the Spin Seebeck system Pt/Y$$_{3}$$Fe$$_{5}$$O$$_{12}$$(YIG). This system was found to show anomalous Hall effect, possible due to the formation of intermetallic compounds between Fe$$^{3+}$$ and Pt. To reveal this possibility, we have measured the Fe 1s photoelectron peaks by using HAXPES. It was found that the Fe ions consist of Fe$$^{3+}$$ in YIG and metallic Fe. The formation of the metallic state is consistent with the proposed origin of the anomalous Hall effect. Other spectra such as Pt 4f will be presented at the conference.

In order to clarify the influence of shotcrete in the underground facility on the groundwater chemistry, an in-situ closed test was conducted in the mock-up tunnel at the depth of 500 m. Brucite, Ettringite, Ca(OH) $$_{2}$$, Gibbsite, K$$_{2}$$CO$$_{3}$$, Na$$_{2}$$CO$$_{3}$$ $$cdot$$ 10H$$_{2}$$O, SiO$$_{2}$$ (a) and Calcite were identified as the dominant minerals affecting the water chemistry. Furthermore, the shotcrete constructed in the tunnel has a reaction capacity which can produce about 570 m$$^{3}$$ of alkaline groundwater (pH12.4) saturated with Ca(OH)$$_{2}$$. The estimation would improve the accuracy of prediction analysis of the long-term chemical influence of cement materials after the closure of the tunnel.

An innovative electro-thermodynamic cycle based on temporal temperature variations using pyroelectric effect has been presented. Practical energy is successfully generated in both $textit{in-situ}$ synchrotron X-ray diffraction measurements under controlled conditions and $textit{Operando}$ real engine dynamometer experiments. The main generating origin is revealed as a combination of a crystal structure change and dipole change phenomenon corresponds to the temperature variation. In particular, the electric field induced 180$$^circ$$ domain switching extremely improves generating power, and the true energy breakeven with temperature variation is firstly achieved.

We have studied the electronic properties of ferroelectric BaTiO$$_{3}$$ using two complementary bulk-sensitive spectroscopic probes, resonant X-ray emission spectroscopy (RXES) and X-ray absorption spectroscopy in the partial fluorescence mode (PFY-XAS). Contrary to a previous study, we found no temperature change of a PFY-XAS spectrum at the Ba L$$_{3}$$ edge between room temperature and 150$$^{circ}$$C. This result is not supportive of the possible presence of the displacement around Ba$$^{2+}$$ at the Curie temperature. RXES spectra were measured at the Ti K edge for BaTiO$$_{3}$$, along with SrTiO$$_{3}$$ and La-doped metallic SrTiO$$_{3}$$. The photon energy of the emission peak is found to be nearly constant throughout the absorption edge for all three compounds. We deduce the Ti 3d states to have a delocalized character, in contrast with the Ba 5d states, a property which is consistent with the proposed scenario of the formation of electric dipoles in BaTiO$$_{3}$$.

We have investigated the magnetic properties of R$$_{2}$$Fe$$_{3}$$O$$_{7}$$ (R=Yb and Lu), which belongs to the homologous family of electronic ferroelectric RFe$$_{2}$$O$$_{4}$$. Magnetization measurements show ferrimagnetic ordering at the Neel temperature (T$$_{N}$$) of about 270 K, which is slightly higher than that of RFe$$_{2}$$O$$_{4}$$ (T$$_{N}$$ about 230-250 K). Observation of spin glass and exchange bias shows a coexistence of ferromagnetic and antiferromagneticinteractions, similarly to RFe$$_{2}$$O$$_{4}$$. This situation gives rise to a complex magnetic change and a broad peak of magnetic entropy change. Some characteristics, such as refrigeration temperatures higher than in RFe$$_{2}$$O$$_{4}$$, seem to offer a possibility of this system to applications.

We have directly probed the Ba 5d states in the ferroelectric barium titanate BaTiO$$_{3}$$ using resonant X-ray emission spectroscopy (RXES) and X-ray absorption spectroscopy in the partial fluorescence mode (PFY-XAS) at the Ba-L$$_{3}$$ edge. The results are compared with those of the non-ferroelectric BaSO$$_{4}$$. While the RXES spectra point to a localized character for the Ba 5d states in both compounds, the main peak of the PFY-XAS spectrum, corresponding to the dipolar transitions from 2p to 5d, is found to be significantly broader for BaTiO$$_{3}$$ than for BaSO$$_{4}$$. On the basis of band structure calculations, this broadening is ascribed to strong hybridization between the unoccupied Ba 5d and O 2p states in the ferroelectric. This suggests that the hybridization between the conduction states of the Ba$$^{2+}$$ and O$$^{2-}$$ ions, and not only Ti$$^{4+}$$ and O$$^{2-}$$, plays a central role in determining the electronic structure of BaTiO$$_{4}$$.

We report the first observation by momentum-resolved resonant inelastic X-ray scattering of charge excitations in an iron-based superconductor and its parent compound, PrFeAsO$$_{0.7}$$ and PrFeAsO respectively, with two main results. First, using calculations based on a 16 band $$dp$$ model, we show that the energy of the lowest-lying excitations, identified as $$dd$$ interband transitions of dominant $$xz$$, $$yz$$ orbital character, exhibits a dramatic dependence on electron correlation. This enables us to estimate the Coulomb repulsion $$U$$ and Hund's coupling $$J$$, and to highlight the role played by $$J$$ in these peculiar orbital-dependent electron correlation effects. Second, we show that short-range antiferromagnetic correlations, which are a prerequisite to the occurrence of these excitations at the $$Gamma$$ point, are still present in the superconducting state.

Metal-Oxide (SiO$$_{2}$$)-Semiconductor (MOS) structures fabricated on Silicon Carbide (SiC) were studied using Electrically Detected Magnetic Resonance technique (EDMR). The residual Carbons are expected to be near the interface between SiC and SiC-SiO$$_{2}$$SiO$$_{2}$$, which is different from Si-SiO$$_{2}$$ interface. By the EDMR measurements at 50K, a defect center related to C dangling bonds which is called P$$_{H1}$$ center and also a center related to C dangling bonds terminated by hydrogens or nitrogens (Ns) which is called P$$_{H1}$$ were observed. In addition, a center related to N donor which is called Nh exist near the interface from N-treatment samples. This suggests that carrier concentration increases near the interface due to the introduction of donors, and as a result, the channel conductance increases.

Magnetic and dielectric study of Bi$$_{2}$$CuO$$_{4}$$

We have investigated the magnetic and dielectric properties of Bi$$_{2}$$CuO$$_{4}$$, which has the same chemical formula as that of the parent materials of high-Tc superconductors, R$$_{2}$$CuO$$_{4}$$ (R: rare earths). Magnetic measurements showed that this oxide exhibits an antiferromagnetic transition at around 40 K, owing to the localized Cu$$^{2+}$$ spins. Dielectric constants were found to be about 100 at room temperature, which are smaller than those of R$$_{2}$$CuO$$_{4}$$ (about 10000 at room temperature). The imaginary part of dielectric response showed the activation energy of about 0.1 eV, suggesting that the dielectric response is brought about by a transfer of Cu-3d electrons.

To clarify this behavior, a series of experiments have been performed in which nitrogen gas has been percolated uniformly through a particle bed. In these experiments, solid particles and water contained in a rectangular tank simulate respectively fuel debris and coolant. Based on the data obtained, an empirical model was developed to describe the transient variation in the bed inclination angle during the self-leveling process. Good agreement has been obtained between calculated and experimental values. Verification of the model has been confirmed through detailed analysis of the effects of experimental parameters such as particle size, particle density, and gas flow rate. Its applicability to extended conditions was further discussed by performing modeling simulations and comparing results against experimental data obtained from a larger-scale experimental system that employed a conventional boiling method.

Pb(In$$_{1/2}$$Nb$$_{1/2}$$)O$$_{3}$$ (PIN) can be antiferroelectric (AFE), ferroelectric (FE) or a relaxor depending upon the perovskite B-site randomness. Orderd PIN (O-PIN, without B-site randomness) is supposed to be an ideal system of lead-based complex perovskite Pb(B'B'')O$$_{3}$$ and expected to give us a clear picture of the AFE/relaxor nature of the ground state by the B-site randomness. We studied the dynamics of O-PIN by inelastic X-ray scattering. The quasielastic (QE) scattering shows the critical slowing down and the transverse acoustic (TA) mode shows the softening towards $$T_{rm N}$$. On the other hand, the transverse optic (TO) mode shows the softening toward low temperature with no clear anomaly at $$T_{rm N}$$. These results represent that the antiferroelectric (AFE) phase transition is associated with the TA and the origin of the QE scattering, while ferroelectric correlation does exist behind the AFE ordering. The effect of B-site randomness is finally discussed on the basis of the results.
