The JAEA-AMS-TONO facility was established in 1997 at the Tono Geoscience Center, Japan Atomic Energy Agency. Our AMS system has been made available for $$^{14}$$C- and $$^{10}$$Be-AMS. At present, the development of $$^{26}$$Al-AMS has been conducted to enhance the capability for multi-nuclide AMS. In this presentation, we report the progress on multi nuclide AMS in addition to the status of our facility.

The Tono Geoscience center of JAEA installed the JAEA-AMS-TONO system at 1997. Since 1998, the system has routinely used for $$^{14}$$C-AMS. Recently, about 800 samples/y have been measured mainly for studies of neotectonics and hydrogeology in relation to research of geosphere stability for long-term Isolation of high-level radioactive waste. Under the common-use facility program, the system has also been used by researchers of universities and other institutes. In addition, $$^{10}$$Be-AMS has been developed for geochronological study. A gas ionisation detector was exchanged. As the detector has a gas absorber cell which has larger volume than the previous one, it is possible to remove $$^{10}$$B efficiently. Test measurement by using several standard samples supplied from University of California, Berkeley was performed. Ratios of $$^{10}$$Be/$$^{9}$$Be were comparable to the certified values, indicating that our system has sufficient ability to be useful to $$^{10}$$Be-AMS.

In the "Plan for meeting the midterm goal (Midterm plan, April 1st, 2010 to March 31st, 2015)" by JAEA, it is planned that the closure activities of the Tono Mine will be started during the period of the Midterm plan. The closure activities at the Tono Mine were reviewed and "Plan for Closure Activities of the Tono Mine; Mine Closure Activities under Review" was developed in June 2010. This report presents detailed closure activities of the facilities and equipment of the Tono Mine.

Current status of JAEA-AMS-TONO, the Japan Atomic Energy Agency

Matsubara, Akihiro; Kokubu, Yoko; Nishizawa, Akimitsu*; Owaki, Yoshio*; Nishio, Tomohiro*; Ishimaru, Tsuneari; Hanaki, Tatsumi

Proceedings of 4th East Asian Symposium on Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (EA-AMS-4), p.147 - 150, 2011/12

The JAEA-AMS-TONO at Tono Geoscience Center, Japan Atomic Energy Agency has provided rare isotope concentrations in sample materials for studies of geological environments of deep underground for development of the geological disposal of high-level radioactive waste. The core facility is a versatile AMS system based on National Electrostatics Corporation Moldel 15SDH-2 (5 MV) Pelletron Accelerator installed in 1997. This system was designed for the determination of the isotopic ratios of beryllium, carbon, aluminium, chlorine, etc. We have also developed $$^{10}$$Be-AMS in order to further expand the system utilization for applications such as estimation of the exposure age of basement rocks and the sedimentation rates. In this article, the current status of $$^{14}$$C-AMS and $$^{10}$$Be-AMS in the JAEA-AMS-TONO are described.

Dai-13-Kai AMS Shimpojiumu Hokokusho, p.120 - 123, 2011/01

In Tono Geoscience Center, $$^{10}$$Be measurement has been developed for geochronological study such as estimation of sedimentation rate and exposure age of rocks by using 15SDH-2 Pelletron accelerator (NEC, US). Fundamental technology for $$^{10}$$Be measurement has been developed through buildup of test measurements to optimize the parameter of the gas discharge box. We will present typical results obtained by test measurements with both standard samples having different values of $$^{10}$$Be/$$^{9}$$Be ratio and unknown samples.

The JAEA-AMS-TONO facility was established in 1997 at the Tono Geoscience Center, Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA). Our AMS system is a versatile system based on a 5MV tandem Pelletron type accelerator (National Electrostatic Corporation, US) and has been made available for $$^{14}$$C-, $$^{10}$$Be- and $$^{26}$$Al-AMSs. These multi-nuclide AMSs have been mainly applied to neotectonics and hydrogeology, in support of our research on geosphere stability applicable to the long-term isolation of high-level radioactive waste. Furthermore, the $$^{14}$$C- and $$^{10}$$Be-AMSs are used for geoscience, environmental science and archaeology by researchers of universities and other institutes under the JAEA's common-use facility program. In this presentation, we introduce dating of $$^{14}$$C and $$^{10}$$Be through our AMS to geoscience studies. Moreover we report development of $$^{26}$$Al-AMS.
