Also, Radiological technologists across Japan were dispatched to the affected area to conduct an essential procedure-screening the belongings and body surfaces of evacuees for contamination at the nuclear disaster at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant operated by Tokyo Electric Power Company in March 2011. In this study, we conducted a fact-finding survey on knowledge and awareness of radiation disasters among radiological technologists at National Hospital Organization facilities in Japan to reveal their literacy and competencies regarding radiation disasters. Also, we compared the knowledge and awareness of radiation disasters among Japanese radiological technologists between nuclear power station areas and non-nuclear power station areas and discuss ideal human resource development for radiological technologists to be ready to serve during a radiation disaster.

JAEA and NUMO have conducted a collaborative research work which is designed to enhance the methodology of repository design and post-closure performance assessment in preliminary investigation stage. With regard to (1) study on rock suitability in terms of hydrology, based on some examples of developing method of hydro-geological structure model, acquired knowledge are arranged using the tree diagram, and model uncertainty and its influence on the evaluation items were discussed. With regard to (2) study on scenario development, the developed approach for "defining conditions" has been reevaluated and improved from practical viewpoints. In addition, the uncertainty evaluation for the effect of use of cementitious material, as well as glass dissolution model, was conducted with analytical evaluation. With regard to (3) study on setting radionuclide migration parameters, based on survey of precedent procedures, multiple-approach for distribution coefficient of rocks was established, and the adequacy of the approach was confirmed though its application to sedimentary rock and granitic rock. Besides, an approach for solubility setting was developed including the procedure of selection of solubility limiting solid phase. The adequacy of the approach was confirmed though its application to key radionuclides.

The AVF cyclotron was operated from May 9th in fiscal 2011 and all the planned experiments on April were cancelled due to scheduled blackouts originated from the Great East Japan Earthquake. The total operation time amounted to 3,038.4 hours. The extended operation from Friday evening to Saturday evening was carried out eight times in order to supply the cancellation on April. The regular yearly overhaul and maintenance were carried out.

Probabilistic safety assessment (PSA) has been applied to nuclear plants as a method to achieve effective safety regulation and safety management. In order to establish the PSA standard for fast breeder reactor (FBR), the FBR-PSA for internal events in rated power operation is studied by Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA). The level1 PSA on the experimental fast reactor Joyo was conducted to investigate core damage probability for internal events with taking human factors effect and dependent failures into account. The result of this study shows that the core damage probability of Joyo is 5.010 per reactor year (/ry) and that the core damage probability is smaller than the safety goal for existed plants (10 ry) and future plants (10/ry) in the IAEA INSAG-12 (International Nuclear Safety Advisory Group) basic safety principle.
