Study of quasielastic barrier distributions as a step towards the synthesis of superheavy elements with hot fusion reactions

The excitation functions for quasielastic scattering of $$^{22}$$Ne+$$^{248}$$Cm, $$^{26}$$Mg+$$^{248}$$Cm, $$^{48}$$Ca+$$^{238}$$U are measured using a gas-filled recoil ion separator The quasielastic barrier distributions are extracted for these systems and are compared with coupled-channel calculations. The results indicate that the barrier distribution is affected dominantly by deformation of the actinide target nuclei, but also by vibrational or rotational excitations of the projectile nuclei, as well as neutron transfer processes before capture. From a comparison between the experimental barrier distributions and the evaporation residue cross sections for Sg (Z=106), Hs (108), Cn (112), and Lv (116), it is suggested that the hot fusion reactions take advantage of a compact collision, where the projectile approaches along the short axis of a prolately deformed nucleus. A new method is proposed to estimate the optimum incident energy to synthesize unknown superheavy nuclei using the barrier distribution.

We summarized temporal changes in air dose rates and radionuclide deposition densities over five years in the 80 km zone based on large-scale environmental monitoring data obtained continuously after the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) accident. The air dose rates in environments associated with human lives decreased at a considerably faster rate than expected for radioactive decay. The average air dose rate originating from the radiocesium deposited in the 80 km zone was lower than that predicted from radioactive decay by a factor of 2-3 at five years after the accident. The causes of this rapid reduction were discussed quantitatively considering the characteristics of radiocesium migration in the environment.

Current industrial practices to extract rhodium from virgin ores carry a heavy environmental burden. Improving the efficiency of the hydrometallurgical processes to separate and recover rhodium from other precious metals provides an opportunity to improve the materials and energy balances, but the presence of mixed chloride-rhodium species following leaching by acid chloride media complicates the recovery process. In this work we have applied a broad range of analytical techniques (FT-IR spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, EXAFS, water-transfer analysis, small-angle neutron scattering, NMR spectroscopy, and electrospray mass spectrometry), which together show that the amino-amide reagent preferentially transports chlorido-rhodium species as a 1:2 neutral assembly from aqueous 2.0 M HCl phase into an organic phase. The extractants then ligate in the outer coordination shell of the chloride-rhodium anion, making this an efficient separation process. In this study, we found that protonation to the extractants induced to form a proton chelate ring, which pre-organises the ligand to present an array of charge diffuse C-H bonds. This templated arrangement of positive dipoles favors complexation to the charge diffuse chloride-rhodium anion over the more charge-dense chloride anion.

準単色線形偏向光子ビームを用いた核共鳴蛍光散乱実験によって、$$^{52}$$Crの低エネルギー双極子強度を測定した。励起状態のパリティは、入射光子ビームの偏極面における共鳴散乱$$gamma$$線の非対称性により決定した。励起エネルギー7.5MeVから12.1MeVまでの磁気双極子(M1)強度の総和は$$sum B(M1)uparrow=5.64(34) mu_N^2$$、電気双極子(E1)強度は$$sum B(E1)uparrow=73.7(23) times 10^{-3} e^2$$ fm$$^2$$という結果が得られた。観測されたM1とE1強度はSkyrme力を用いた乱雑位相近似法計算と比較を行い、双極子強度分布に対する2粒子2空孔状態とテンソル力の影響を調べた。この結果、2粒子2空孔状態とテンソル力の効果がともに、実験データの遷移強度の和を説明するために必要であることが分かった。

Low-lying states in neutron-rich $$^{81,82.83.84}$$Zn nuclei were measured for the first time via in-beam $$gamma$$-ray spectroscopy at RIKEN. These include the 4$$_1^+$$ to 2$$_1^+$$ in $$^{82}$$Zn and the 2$$_1^+$$ to 0$$_1^+$$ and 4$$_1^+$$ to 2$$_1^+$$ in $$^{84}$$Zn. The reduced E($$2^+$$) energies and increased E(4$$^+$$)/E(2$$^+$$) ratios at $$N$$=52,54 compared to $$^{80}$$Zn attest that the magicity is confined just on the neutron number $$N$$=50 only. The levels observed in $$^{84}$$Zn suggest the onset of deformation towards heavier Zn isotopes. The data were compared to state-of-the-art shell model calculations.

高レベル廃液中のPd, Zr, Se, Csは長半減期核種のPd-107, Zr-93, Se-79, Cs-135を有している。高レベル廃液から除去し、核変換により処分することで、環境負荷低減に役立てることができる。これら元素について、PdはMIDOA, NTAアミド、Csはクラウンエーテル、ZrはTODGA, HDEHP, Seはフェニレンジアミンで抽出可能である。それぞれ元素の回収条件について検討した成果について述べる。

硝酸溶液からオクタノールまたはドデカン溶媒へのSe, Zr, Pd, Csの溶媒抽出を行った。これら元素は長半減期の核種を含み、高レベル廃液の処理にとってこれら元素の簡便な分離方法の開発が不可欠である。Seはフェニレンジアミン、ZrはHDEHP又はTODGA、PdはMIDOA又はNTAアミドで抽出可能である。CsはDtBuDB18C6を用いて、抽出溶媒を水相の10倍を用いることで90%回収を達成できることを確認した。

At the Japan Atomic Energy Agency, long-term prediction models have been developed to assess how ambient dose equivalent rates might change in the future and to analyze radiological situations within the 80 km radius of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant. In the present study, uncertain predictions of future ambient dose equivalent rates arising from variability in model parameters were assessed using Monte Carlo simulations. It was found that ambient dose equivalent rates for the next 5-30 years after the accident would be predicted within a factor of approximately 2. The long-term prediction models would be useful for a better understanding of the radiological situation since they provide information on the time variation of the ambient dose equivalent rates in inhabited areas.

Changes in ambient dose equivalent rates through the vehicle-borne surveys have elucidated ecological half-lives of radioactive caesium in the environment. To confirm that the ecological half-lives are appropriate for predicting ambient dose equivalent rates within living areas, it is important to ascertain ambient dose equivalent rates on/around roads. In this present study, radiation monitoring on/around roads at Kawamata town located about 37km northwest of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant was performed using monitoring vehicles and survey meters. It was found that the ambient dose equivalent rates around roads were higher than those on roads as of October of 2012. And withal the ecological half-lives on roads were essentially consistent with those around roads. As basis of dose predictions using ecological half-lives on roads, it is necessary to make corrections to ambient dose equivalent rates through the vehicle-borne surveys against those within living areas.
