SENJU, a time-of-flight Laue-type single-crystal neutron diffractometer, was developed at the Materials and Life Science Experimental Facility (MLF) of the Japan Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC). Molecular structure analysis of a sub-millimeter taurine crystal and magnetic structure analysis of a MnF$$_{2}$$ crystal were performed to evaluate its performance.

In this study, visualization experiment for the bubbly flow in a horizontal pipe excited by oscillation acceleration was performed to understand bubbly flow behavior under earthquake acceleration. Liquid pressure was also measured at upstream and downstream of the test section. In addition, to consider detailed effects of pressure gradient on bubble motion, numerical simulation of two-phase flow in horizontal pipe with vibration was performed by a detailed two-phase flow simulation code with an advanced interface tracking method: TPFIT. Based on observed images and calculated results, bubble velocity was evaluated. It was confirmed that the pressure gradient amplitude increased with the increase of the frequency of the table. In addition, it was observed that the bubble velocity amplitude also increases with the increase of the frequency of the table. It was concluded that the bubble motion was strongly affected by the pressure gradient in the test section.

A Multi Venturi Scrubber System (MVSS) is one of the filtered venting devices, and used for existing reactors in Europe. One of the main components of the MVSS is a self-priming Venturi Scrubber (VS). It is considered that a dispersed or dispersed annular flow is formed in the VS by a self-priming phenomena. In the self-priming phenomena, the liquid was suctioned from a surrounding region to the inside of the VS. And a part of the radioactive materials in the gas are eliminated to the liquid through the gas-liquid interface of the dispersed or annular dispersed flow. Therefore, to consider the MVSS operation characteristics, it is important to evaluate the liquid flow rate of the self-priming of the VS including the occurrence condition of the self-priming. In this paper, to understand the self-priming phenomena of the VS for the filtered venting, theoretical preliminary analysis for evaluating liquid flow rate of the self-priming of the VS and experiment to observe self-priming phenomena and measure the liquid flow rare of the self-priming were performed. By comparing these results, we discussed about the mechanism of the self-priming phenomena. As a result, the self-priming phenomena in the VS was observed. In addition, at a higher gas mass flux, the suspension of the self-priming phenomena was confirmed both experimentally and theoretically.


Field-induced order in heavy-fermion compound YbCo$$_2$$Zn$$_{20}$$

YbCo$$_2$$Zn$$_{20}$$ has a heavy-fermion ground state with an enormously large Sommerfeld coefficient of 8 J/molK$$^2$$, and that is sensitive to external fields. Whereas pressure induces antiferromagnetic order, magnetic field induces metamagnetic transitions around 0.5 T, and new ordered state appears above 6 T for $$B{parallel}{langle}111{rangle}$$. In order to get insights into electronic states and its magnetic field response, neutron scattering experiments on single crystalline samples were carried. In a field-induced phase, magnetic reflections were successfully observed, which has a different propagation vector to that of pressure induced phase. Inelastic neutron scattering probes a crystal-field excitation at a low excitation energy which overlaps to quasielastic response. The results suggest degenerated energy scale, and that leads to variety of external response in YbCo$$_2$$Zn$$_{20}$$.

The effect of magnetic field on the static and dynamic spin correlations in the non-centrosymmetric heavy-fermion superconductor CePt$$_3$$Si was investigated by neutron scattering. The application of a magnetic field B increases the antiferromagnetic (AFM) peak intensity. This increase depends strongly on the field direction: for $$B{parallel}c$$ the intensity increases by a factor of 4.6 at a field of 6.6T, which corresponds to more than a doubling of the AFM moment, while the moment increases by only 10% for $$B{parallel}a$$ at 5T. This is in strong contrast to the inelastic response near the antiferromagnetic ordering vector, where no marked field variations are observed for $$B{parallel}c$$ up to 3.8T. The results reveal that the AFM state in CePt$$_3$$Si, which coexists with superconductivity, is distinctly different from other unconventional superconductors.

The discovery of heavy-fermion superconductivity in non-centrosymmetric compound CePt$$_3$$Si, and subsequent findings of Ce$$TX_3$$ (T: transition metal, X: Si, Ge) bring a new essence in the condensed matter physics, since a novel type of superconducting properties is expected to come out. In CePt$$_3$$Si, the compound shows an antiferromagnetic (AFM) order at $$T_{rm N }$$=2.2 K and enters into a heavy-fermion superconducting state below $$T_{rm SC}{sim}$$ 0.5 K. Through neutron scattering experiments under external magnetic field, we identified anomalous field response in CePt$$_3$$Si in the AFM state; AFM intensity showed enormous enhancement with increasing an applied field. The intensity kept increasing up to 7 T with the kink at around the additional phase boundary. These features suggest that the magnetic order in CePt$$_3$$Si is not a simple AFM one, and imply that large fraction of magnetic response could be still missing in this compound.

We measured the electrical resistivity, specific heat, magnetic susceptibility, high-field magnetization, neutron scattering and electrical resistivity under pressure for CeRhGe. The anisotropy of the magnetic susceptibility and magnetization are very large, reflecting the orthorhombic crystal structure. The magnetic easy-axis is found to be oriented along the $$a$$-axis. From the neutron scattering experiment, the magnetic structure is, however, not simple, indicating an incommensurate antiferromagnetic structure. The magnetic susceptibility and magnetization were analyzed on the basis of the crystalline electric field scheme of localized-4$$f$$ energy levels, indicating a very large splitting energy of the 4$$f$$ levels.

反強磁性と超伝導の共存が期待される重い電子系超伝導体CePt$$_{3}$$Siの中性子散乱による研究を行った。c面に平行かつ強磁性的に配列したCeの磁気モーメントがc軸方向に反強磁性的に積層した磁気構造を示すことを明らかにした。磁気モーメントは0.3$$mu$$$$_{B}$$と近藤効果のためかなり縮んでいる。この磁気構造はスピン一重項及び三重項状態が共存しているとする主張と矛盾しない。1.4meV及び24meVに明確な結晶場励起を観察し、この物質が4f電子の局存的性格と重い電子系超伝導が共存する非常に興味深い系であることを明らかにした。帯磁率の異方性と合わせて考えると、結晶場順位は$$Gamma$$$$_{7}$$基底状態,$$Gamma$$$$_{6}$$, $$Gamma$$$$_{7}$$が第一及び第二励起状態であると決定された。このうち基底状態を第一励起状態は立方晶$$Gamma$$$$_{8}$$四重項が弱い正方晶対称性によって1.4meVとわずかに分裂したと理解される。
