CeドープGd$$_{3}$$Al$$_{2}$$Ga$$_{3}$$O$$_{12}$$(Ce:GAGG)シンチレーターにおける陽イオン空孔の存在を明らかにするために、ガンマ線誘起陽電子消滅寿命測定(GiPALS)法による測定を行った。GAGGおよびCe:GAGGのGiPALSスペクトルに現れる成分は、バルク中と欠陥に捕獲された状態の陽電子消滅であり、その結果2つの指数減衰成分で構成されている。Ce:Y$$_{3}$$Al$$_{5}$$O$$_{12}$$に関する研究から、欠陥に関連する構造はAl/Ga-Oの複空孔に起因するものであることが示唆された。この成分は、Ce, Mg:GAGGの方が小さくなり、その傾向はリン光の原因である浅い電子トラップの抑制と相関していた。酸素空孔は、Al/Ga空孔の電荷を補う役割をしている。欠陥に関連した構造における寿命は、Mg共ドーピングによって大幅に変化し、これは、酸素空孔とともに、Al/GaサイトでのMg$$^{2+}$$イオンとの集合体を考慮することで理解され、その結果、空孔クラスターが形成された。

Ablation dynamics of tungsten irradiated with a 70-fs laser pulse is investigated with X-ray interferometry and X-ray imaging using 13.9 nm soft X-ray laser of 7 ps pulse duration. The evolution of high density ablation front of tungsten is presented. The ablation front expands to around 120 nm above the original target surface at 160 ps after fs-laser irradiation with the expansion speed of approximately 750 m/s. These results will provide important data for understanding ablation properties of W, which is a candidate material of the first wall of magnetic confinement fusion reactors.

In this study, visualization experiment for the bubbly flow in a horizontal pipe excited by oscillation acceleration was performed to understand bubbly flow behavior under earthquake acceleration. Liquid pressure was also measured at upstream and downstream of the test section. In addition, to consider detailed effects of pressure gradient on bubble motion, numerical simulation of two-phase flow in horizontal pipe with vibration was performed by a detailed two-phase flow simulation code with an advanced interface tracking method: TPFIT. Based on observed images and calculated results, bubble velocity was evaluated. It was confirmed that the pressure gradient amplitude increased with the increase of the frequency of the table. In addition, it was observed that the bubble velocity amplitude also increases with the increase of the frequency of the table. It was concluded that the bubble motion was strongly affected by the pressure gradient in the test section.


High order harmonics from relativistic electron spikes

We provide a description of experiments performed with the J-KAREN and Astra Gemini lasers where we discovered a new regime of relativistic high-order harmonic generation by multi-terawatt femtosecond lasers in gas targets. The results were explained using particle-in-cell simulations and catastrophe theory. Our work paves the way towards a bright coherent X-ray source based on compact lasers and accessible, repetitive, and debris-free gas jet targets. Such a source will be crucial for fundamental research and numerous applications requiring pumping, probing, imaging of microscopic objects and for attosecond science.

We present a detailed description of our discovery of a new regime of high-order harmonic generation, including experimental data, simulations, and description of new harmonic generation mechanism. The harmonics are generated by multi-terawatt relativistic-irradiance ($$>$$ 10$$^{18}$$ W/cm$$^2$$) femtosecond ($$approx$$ 30-50 fs) lasers focused to gas jet targets. According to our model, the harmonics are produced by sharp, structurally stable, oscillating electron spikes at the joint of boundaries of wake and bow waves excited by the laser pulse.

本研究では、イオン注入と電気化学エッチングを組合せて、グラッシーカーボン基板上に炭化タングステン(WC)のナノ微粒子を作製した。実験では、100keV W$$^+$$をグラッシーカーボン基板に照射して注入試料を作製した後、水酸化ナトリウム水溶液中で注入試料の表面をアノード酸化によりエッチングした。試料の分析にはX線光電子分光(XPS), ラザフォード後方散乱分析(RBS), 透過型電子顕微鏡(TEM)を用いた。XPS, RBSの結果から、試料中でWCが形成されていたことと、電気化学エッチングによってその高濃度導入面が表面に露出したことが確認できた。断面TEMによって直径約10nmのナノ微粒子が表層に存在している様子が観察された。

Relativistic high harmonic generation in gas jet targets

We experimentally demonstrate new regime of high-order harmonic generation by relativistic-irradiance lasers in gas jet targets. Bright harmonics with both the odd and even orders are emitted in the forward direction, while the base harmonic frequency is downshifted. The harmonics are generated by linearly as well as circularly polarized pulses. With the 9 TW laser, the harmonics reach 360 eV, within the "water window" spectral region. Using 120 TW laser producing 40 uJ/sr per harmonic at 120 eV, we demonstrate the photon number scalability. The experimentally demonstrated harmonics cannot be explained by previously known mechanisms. We introduce a novel high-order harmonics generation mechanism, which explains our experimental findings.

We report on novel method to generate ultra-short coherent X-rays using a laser-plasma interaction. Nonlinear interaction of intense laser pulses with plasma creates stable, specific structures such as electron cusps. For example wake waves excited in an underdense plasma by the laser become dense and propagate along with the laser pulse (Flying Mirror). The flying mirror can reflect a counter-propagating laser pulse and directly convert it into high-frequency radiation and compress the pulse. We have conducted experimental results using 9 TW laser with a He gas target. We observed 10$$^{10}$$ photons in the extreme ultra-violet region (12.8-22.0 nm).

It was shown experimentally the possibility of nanostructuring (about 20 nm) of gold surface by picosecond soft X-ray single pulse with low fluence of 20 mJ/cm$$^{2}$$. The nanometer-scale changes of the surface structure are due to the splash of molten gold under fluence gradient of the laser beam. In addition, the ablation process occurs at slightly higher fluence of 50 mJ/cm$$^{2}$$. The atomistic model of ablation is developed that reveals that the low threshold fluence of this process is due to the build-up of the high electron pressure and the comparatively low electron-ion energy relaxation rate in gold.

Evaluation of the relative biological effectiveness of carbon ion beams in the cerebellum using the rat organotypic slice culture system

To clarify the relative biological effectiveness (RBE) values of carbon ion (C) beams in normal brain tissues, a rat organotypic slice culture system was used. The cerebellum was dissected from 10-day-old Wistar rats, cut parasagittally into approximately 600-$$mu$$m-thick slices and cultivated using a membrane-based culture system with a liquid-air interface. Slices were irradiated with 140 kV X-rays and 18.3 MeV/amu C-beams (linear energy transfer = 108 keV/$$mu$$m). After irradiation, the slices were evaluated histopathologically using hematoxylin and eosin staining, and apoptosis was quantified using the TdT-mediated dUTP-biotin nick-end labeling (TUNEL) assay. Disorganization of the external granule cell layer (EGL) and apoptosis of the external granule cells (EGCs) were induced within 24 h after exposure to doses of more than 5 Gy from C-beams and X-rays. In the early postnatal cerebellum, morphological changes following exposure to C-beams were similar to those following exposure to X-rays. The RBEs values of C-beams using the EGL disorganization and the EGC TUNEL index endpoints ranged from 1.4 to 1.5. This system represents a useful model for assaying the biological effects of radiation on the brain, especially physiological and time-dependent phenomena.

原子力機構ではAmやNpのようなMAを含有したMOX燃料の開発を行っている。本研究では特に、MAを微量に添加した場合におけるMOX燃料の酸素ポテンシャルに着目した。1473, 1573及び1623Kにおける(Am$$_{0.024}$$Pu$$_{0.311}$$U$$_{0.665}$$)O$$_{2-x}$$及び(Am$$_{0.01}$$Np$$_{0.12}$$Pu$$_{0.29}$$U$$_{0.58}$$)O$$_{2-x}$$の定比組成近傍の酸素ポテンシャルについて熱重量法により測定した。(Am$$_{0.024}$$Pu$$_{0.311}$$U$$_{0.665}$$)O$$_{2-x}$$及び(Am$$_{0.01}$$Np$$_{0.12}$$Pu$$_{0.29}$$U$$_{0.58}$$)O$$_{2-x}$$はMAを含まない(Pu$$_{0.30}$$U$$_{0.70}$$)O$$_{2-x}$$の酸素ポテンシャルに比べてわずかに高くなった。本研究から、MOXの酸素ポテンシャルはAmの影響によりわずかに高くなり、Npの影響はほとんど受けないことがわかった。
