Nanoscopic structure of borosilicate glass with additives for nuclear waste vitrification

We investigated the nanoscopic structure of borosilicate glasses as a host for high-level radioactive liquid waste (HLLW) in the presence of the additives Na$$_{2}$$O and CaO/ZnO with and without Li$$_{2}$$O. These additives have been practically used to lower the glass melting point, suppress the macroscopic phase separation, and increase the chemical durability of glasses. Small-angle neutron scattering was used to elucidate the effect of the additives on the nanoscopic structure along with macro- and atomic-scale observations obtained using neutron imaging and X-ray diffraction, respectively. The borosilicate glass formed a microphase-separated structure of SiO$$_{2}$$- and B$$_{2}$$O$$_{3}$$-rich domains approximately 100 nm in size in the absence of Na$$_{2}$$O, even in a structure homogeneous on a millimeter scale, and the domain spacing decreased with increasing Na$$_{2}$$O content rate. The CaO/ZnO additives induced inhomogeneities, such as void structures several nanometers in size, although the inhomogeneity was suppressed by the coaddition of Li$$_{2}$$O. These results provide insights into the performance of host glasses for HLLW vitrification; incorporating HLLW into glasses is likely to cause changes in the nanoscopic structure of host glasses similar to those revealed here.

The nanostructure produced by heavy cold rolling provides tensile strength of 1.9 GPa in SUS316LN austenitic stainless steel, which is further raised up to 2.2 GPa by peak aging at 748 K. Nanostructural observations using electron microscopes, small-angle scattering, and atom probe tomography revealed segregation of solute elements of Mo, Si, and so on at twin and low-angle lamellar boundaries. Finite element calculation demonstrates that this grain-boundary segregation can increase the mechanical strength.

Magnetism in EuNiIn$$_4$$ has been studied by specific heat, magnetic susceptibility, magnetization, $$^{151}$$Eu M$"o$ssbauer spectroscopy, and neutron diffraction experiments. The specific heat shows two magnetic transitions at $$T_{rm N1}$$ and $$T_{rm N2}$$ at zero magnetic field. An antiferromagnetic ground state of EuNiIn$$_4$$ has a uniaxial magnetic anisotropy along the b-axis, revealed by the magnetic susceptibility and the M$"o$ssbauer spectroscopy. Single crystal neutron diffraction experiments clarify that this antiferromagnetic structure in the ground state is characterized by the commensurate propagation vector $$q$$ = (1/2, 1/2, 1/2) which reveals no distinct anomaly at $$T_{rm N2}$$. The magnetization curve along the b-axis at 2 K shows four successive magnetic field-induced transitions up to 50 kOe and, reaches 7 $${mu}_{rm B}$$/f.u. above 190 kOe, The magnetic phase diagram in EuNiIn$$_4$$ has unique characteristics with five magnetic states in low magnetic field.

Excited configurations of hydrogen in the oxyhydride BaTiO$$_{3-x}$$H$$_x$$ ($$x=0.1-0.5$$), which are considered to be involved in its hydrogen transport and exchange processes, were investigated by $$mu^+$$SR spectroscopy using muonium (Mu) as a pseudoisotope of hydrogen. Muons implanted into BaTiO$$_{3-x}$$H$$_x$$ were mainly found in two metastable states. One was assigned to a highly mobile interstitial protonic state, which is commonly observed in perovskite oxides. The other was found to form an entangled two spin-$$frac{1}{2}$$ system with the nuclear spin of an H$$^-$$ ion at the anion site. The structure of the (H,Mu) complex agrees well with that of a neutralized center containing two H$$^-$$ ions at a doubly charged oxygen vacancy, which was predicted to form in SrTiO$$_{3-delta}$$ by a computational study. Above 100 K, interstitial Mu$$^+$$ diffusion and retrapping to a deep defect were observed, which could be a rate-limiting step of macroscopic Mu/H transport in BaTiO$$_{3-x}$$H$$_x$$.

With ion-beam irradiation, one can introduce an inhomogeneous depth distribution of functional groups due to the variation of the ion energy deposition as a function of depth. Ion-beam irradiation effects for polymers by such inhomogeneous energy deposition are important for evaluating polymer degradation, developing new materials, micromachining, and so on. In this work, the local transformations of the chemical structure induced in polymer by irradiation with various ion-beams are investigated.
