In 2017, a research project entitled "Study on accuracy improvement of fast-neutron capture reaction data of long-lived MAs for development of nuclear transmutation systems" started as a joint collaboration, including Tokyo Tech, Japan Atomic Energy Agency and Kyoto University. This project focuses on neutron capture reaction of MAs, especially $$^{237}$$Np, $$^{241}$$Am and $$^{243}$$Am, in the fast neutron energy region. The final goal of this project is to improve the neutron capture cross sections of $$^{237}$$Np, $$^{241}$$Am and $$^{243}$$Am employing a high-intensity neutron beam from a spallation source of the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC) that reduces uncertainties of measurement. In this contribution, the overview of the project and the current progress will be presented.

EuPtSi with the cubic chiral structure exhibits a skyrmion phase under magnetic field. We succeeded in growing high-quality single crystals by the Bridgman method. Fermi surface splitting reflecting the noncentrosymmetric structure was successfully observed experimentally.

We have succeeded in growing a new heavy fermion compound YbNi$$_2$$Si$$_3$$ by the flux method. From electrical resistivity, magnetization, specific heat, magnetic torque and X-ray photoemission measurements concluded that this compound is a heavy fermion compound exhibiting an antiferromagnetic order at 0.35 K.

The neutron capture cross-section of $$^{237}$$Np has been measured in the neutron energy region of 10 meV to 500 eV. A neutron time-of-flight method was employed using the NaI(Tl) spectrometer in the ANNRI beam-line at the Japanese Proton Accelerator Re-search Complex (J-PARC). The experimental capture yield was derived using the pulse-height weighting technique and an energy dependent cross-section was obtained relative to the incident neutron spectrum derived from a $$^{10}$$B(n, $$alpha$$)$$^{7}$$Li reaction yield. The absolute cross-section was determined by normalizing the results to JENDL-4.0 cross-section data at the first resonance of $$^{237}$$Np. The thermal cross-section was measured to be 177.6 $$pm$$ 3.8 b. The resolved resonance region was analyzed with the REFIT code.

Dc magnetization measurements have been performed on the orthorhombic Ising ferromagnet Urge. We observed a clear first-order reorientation transition with a small hysteresis and estimated the tricritical point to be around 4 K. The magnetization and the thermal expansion data indicate the presence of a characteristic temperature of about 1 K.

核変換システムを開発する上で長寿命MA核種の高速領域における高精度中性子捕獲断面積データが必要とされている。2017年より、東京工業大学, 原子力機構, 京都大学の共同プロジェクトとして、長寿命MAの高速中性子捕獲反応データの高精度化研究が始まった。今回、本プロジェクトの内容をシリーズ発表として報告する。本発表は、シリーズ発表の始めとしてプロジェクトの背景、狙い、全体計画について説明する。

High-energy measurement of the neutron capture cross-section of $$^{237}$$Np

The neutron capture cross section of $$^{237}$$Np was measured at the ANNRI beamline of J-PARC. A final value for the capture cross section of $$^{237}$$Np is presented using two normalization techniques. The capture data was normalized at the first resonance using JENDL-4.0 and also using the total neutron flux obtained from a $$^{197}$$Au sample measurement in which the first resonance was completely saturated. This measurement results were complemented with calculations using CCONE code to estimate the PH spectrum under the detection threshold. Alongside these results, an analysis of the high-energy capture cross-section with CCONE was performed. An evaluated cross-section is presented using the experimental results.
