High-field depinned phase and planar Hall effect in the skyrmion host Gd$$_2$$PdSi$$_3$$

For the skyrmion-hosting intermetallic Gd$$_2$$PdSi$$_3$$ with centrosymmetric hexagonal lattice and triangular net of rare earth sites, we report a thorough investigation of the magnetic phase diagram. Our work reveals a magnetic phase with an isotropic value of the critical field for all orientations, where the magnetic ordering vector ${bf q}$ is depinned from its preferred directions in the basal plane. The bulk nature of the skyrmion lattice and of other magnetic phases was evidenced by specific-heat measurements. Resistivity anisotropy, likely originating from partial gapping of the density of states along ${bf q}$ in this Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yoshida magnet, is picked up via the planar Hall effect (PHE). The PHE confirms the single-${bf q}$ nature of the magnetic order when the field is in the hexagonal plane, and allows one to detect the preferred directions of ${bf q}$. Several scenarios for the depinned phase are discussed on the basis of the data.

Successive phase transitions of $$R_{3}$$Ir$$_{4}$$Sn$$_{13}$$ ($$R$$: La and Ce) were studied using neutron and X-ray diffraction techniques. A semimetal Ce$$_{3}$$Ir$$_{4}$$Sn$$_{13}$$ undergoes three phase transitions: an antiferromagnetic ordering characterized by a propagation vector $$q_{rm M}$$ = (1/2, 1/2, 2/5) below 0.6 K, a structural transformation with $$q_{rm S2}$$= (1/4, 1/4, 1/4) at 2.0 K, and another structural transformation with $$q_{rm S1}$$ = (1/2, 1/2, 0) above room temperature. La$$_{3}$$Ir$$_{4}$$Sn$$_{13}$$ was confirmed to be a superconductor below 2.5 K under the $$q_{rm S1}$$ = (1/2, 1/2, 0) structure that also appears above room temperature.

原子核が熱外中性子を共鳴吸収する反応において、弱い相互作用起因のパリティ対称性の破れが核子間相互作用の最大10$$^{6}$$倍増幅される現象が観測されている。この反応では時間反転対称性の破れにも同様の増幅効果があることが理論的に予言されており、全く新しい手法で未知の時間反転対称性の破れを世界最高感度で探索できる可能性がある。しかし、その増幅率は全ての核種で未知であり、この手法がもつ可能性を具体的に議論できていなかった。本研究ではJ-PARC, MLF, BL04のGe検出器群を用いて、$$^{139}$$La(n,$$gamma$$)反応の角度分布測定を行い、世界で初めて$$^{139}$$Laで時間反転対称性の破れの増幅率を求めることに成功した。この結果を用いて、実験に必要な測定時間を見積もると、偏極率40%のLa核偏極技術、偏極率70%, 79atm・cmの$$^3$$He Spin Filterを用意すれば、1.4日の測定で世界最高感度で時間反転対称性の破れ探索実験が可能であることが判明した。現在原子力機構では高性能な$$^3$$He Spin Filterの開発を行なっており、本発表では$$gamma$$線の角度分布測定の結果、及び共用ビームラインに適用するための$$^3$$He Spin Filterの開発の現状について発表する。

Neutron total and capture cross sections of $$^{243}$$Am have been measured in Accurate Neutron Nucleus Reaction measurement Instrument at Materials and Life Science Experimental Facility of Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex with a neutron TOF method. The neutron capture cross section in the energy region from 10 meV to 100 eV was determined using an array of Ge detectors. Three samples with different activities were used for measurements of the capture cross section. The neutron total cross section in the energy region from 4 meV to 100 eV was measured using Li-glass detectors. Derived cross-section value at neutron energy of 0.0253 eV is 87.7$$pm$$5.4 b for the capture cross section and 101$$pm$$11 b for the total cross section.

Neutron total and capture cross sections of $$^{241}$$Am have been measured with a new data acquisition system and a new neutron transmission measurement system installed in Accurate Neutron Nucleus Reaction measurement Instrument (ANNRI) at Materials and Life Science Experimental Facility (MLF) of Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC). The neutron total cross sections of $$^{241}$$Am were determined by using a neutron time-of-flight method in the neutron energy region from 4 meV to 2 eV. The thermal total cross section of $$^{241}$$Am was derived with an uncertainty of 2.9%. A pulse-height weighting technique was applied to determine neutron capture yields of $$^{241}$$Am. The neutron capture cross sections were determined by the time-of-flight method in the neutron energy region from the thermal to 100 eV, and the thermal capture cross section was obtained with an uncertainty of 4.1%. The evaluation data of JENDL-4.0 and JEFF-3.2 were compared with the present results.


Angular distribution of $$gamma$$ rays from neutron-induced compound states of $$^{140}$$La

The angular distribution of individual $$gamma$$ rays, emitted from a neutron-induced compound-nuclear state via radiative capture reaction of $$^{139}$$La$$(n,gamma)$$ has been studied as a function of incident neutron energy in the epithermal region by using germanium detectors. An asymmetry $$A_{LH}$$ was defined as $$frac{N_{L}-N_{H}}{N_{L}+N_{H}}$$, where $$N_L$$ and $$N_H$$ are integrals of low- and high-energy region of a neutron resonance respectively, and we found that $$A_{LH}$$ has the angular dependence of $$(A cos theta_{gamma} + B)$$, where $$theta_{gamma}$$ is the emitted angle of $$gamma$$ rays, with $$A =- 0.3881 pm 0.0236$$ and $$B =- 0.0747 pm 0.0105$$ in 0.74-eV p-wave resonance. This angular distribution was analyzed within the framework of interference between s- and p-wave amplitudes in the entrance channel to the compound-nuclear state, and it is interpreted as the value of the partial p-wave neutron width corresponding to the total angular momentum of the incident neutron combined with the weak matrix element, in the context of the mechanism of enhanced parity-violating effects. Additionally, we use the result to quantify the possible enhancement of the breaking of time-reversal invariance in the vicinity of the p-wave resonance.

In this study, the germanium detector assembly, installed at the Accurate Neutron Nuclear Reaction measurement Instruments (ANNRI) in the Material and Life Science Facility (MLF) operated by the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC), has been characterized for extension to the measurement of the angular distribution of individual $$gamma$$-ray transitions from neutron-induced compound states. We have developed a Monte Carlo simulation code using the GEANT4 toolkit, which can reproduce the pulse-height spectra of $$gamma$$-rays from radioactive sources and (n,$$gamma$$) reactions. The simulation is applicable to the measurement of $$gamma$$-rays in the energy region of 0.5-11.0 MeV.

Mn$$_{2}$$VAl Heusler alloy films were epitaxially grown on MgO(100) single-crystal substrates by ultra-high-vacuum magnetron sputtering. A2- and L21-type Mn$$_{2}$$VAl order was controlled by the deposition temperature. A2-type Mn$$_{2}$$VAl films showed no spontaneous magnetization, while L21-type Mn$$_{2}$$VAl films showed ferrimagnetic behaviour with a maximum saturation magnetization of 220 emu/cm$$^{3}$$ at room temperature (RT). An antiferromagnetic reflection was observed with neutron diffraction at RT for an A2-type Mn$$_{2}$$VAl film deposited at 400$$^{circ}$$C. A bilayer sample of the antiferromagnetic A2-type Mn$$_{2}$$VAl and Fe showed an exchange bias of 120 Oe at 10 K.


Resonance analysis of cross section data measured by J-PARC/MLF using the modified REFIT code

In the project entitled as "Research and development for Accuracy Improvement of neutron nuclear data on Minor ACtinides (AIMAC)", the cross section data of MAs ($$^{241,243}$$Am, $$^{237}$$Np) have been measured at neutron time-of-flight (TOF) beam line ANNRI installed at J-PARC/MLF. The high precision data is expected even in the case of small amount sample because the reaction rates are strongly increased by the high intensity pulsed neutron beam of J-PARC/MLF. We are going to analyze those cross section data by using the least-squares multilevel R-matrix code REFIT. For precise analysis of the cross section data measured by ANNRI, it is necessary to take into account the energy resolution function. In this study, we therefore adopt the modified version of REFIT which treats the energy resolution function for ANNRI. The precise energy calibration is also important. We performed the resonance analysis of the neutron total and capture cross section data of $$^{197}$$Au measured by ANNRI under the same operational condition of J-PARC/MLF to fix parameters related to energy calibration.

J-PARC物質・生命科学実験施設ANNRIビームラインのデータ収集系更新作業が行われた。MLFのビームパワーは2008年に比較して2015年には20倍以上となり、ビーム量の増大によりビームラインユーザーはより高統計の実験データを取得できるようになった。ビームパワー増大に対応するため、ANNRIにおけるGe検出器アレイのデータ収集システムが更新された。データ収集システムは同時に、中性子全断面積測定のために整備されているLi glass検出器の信号取得のためにも用いられる予定である。コミッショニング実験が0.1mm厚の金サンプルを用いてJ-PARCの500kW陽子ビームを用いて行われた。捕獲断面積および全断面積測定両方について飛行時間法の適用性が試験された。Ge検出器アレイについて、ADCおよびTDCの非線形性、エネルギー分解能、多チャンネルコインシデンスおよび不感時間の性能が測定された。Ge検出器の不感時間は従来のデータ収集システムに比較して、少しのエネルギー分解能劣化を許容すれば1/4になっていた。

A nuclear data project entitled Research and development for Accuracy Improvement of neutron nuclear data on Minor ACtinides (AIMAC) is being performed in Japan. The objective of the project is to improve accuracy of neutron nuclear data for minor actinides and some fission products, which is required for developing innovative nuclear system transmuting these nuclei. Following research items have been conducted to achieve the objective: (1) Measurements of thermal neutron capture cross-sections by activation methods, (2) High-precision quantifications of shielded sample amounts used for TOF measurement, (3) Resonance parameter determinations at J-PARC/ANNRI and KURRI/LINAC, (4) Extension of capture cross sections to high energy neutrons at J-PARC/ANNRI, (5) High quality evaluation based on iterative communication with experimenters. The achievement of the project is presented.

$$^{241,243}$$Am及び$$^{239}$$Npの崩壊$$gamma$$線放出率の高精度測定を実施した。測定試料の放射能は、試料から放出される$$alpha$$粒子をSi半導体検出器で測定することで決定した。そして、$$gamma$$線はプレナ型のHPGe検出器で測定した。Ge検出器の検出効率は標準$$gamma$$線源の測定とPHITSを用いた光子の輸送計算から、50-1332keVのエネルギー領域で0.7%, 50keV以下の領域では1.3%の精度で決定した。最終的に、$$^{241,243}$$Am及び$$^{239}$$Npの主要な崩壊$$gamma$$線放出率を1.2%の精度で得ることができた。

マイナーアクチニドの中性子捕獲断面積の高精度化のためには、系統誤差に係ってくるサンプル量を高精度で決定することが重要である。原子力システム研究開発事業「マイナーアクチニドの中性子核データ精度向上に係る研究開発」の一環として、$$^{241,243}$$Am, $$^{237,239}$$Np及び$$^{233}$$Paの$$gamma$$線放出率の高精度測定を実施した。試料の放射能はアルファ線測定によって決定し、試料から放出される$$gamma$$線をプレナ型Ge検出器で測定した。Ge検出器の検出効率は、標準$$gamma$$線源の測定とPHITSを用いた$$gamma$$線のモンテカルロシミュレーションを組み合わせて決定した。最終的に、これらの核種の$$gamma$$線放出率を2%以内の精度で得ることができた。

Three-dimensional arrays of dipolar rotors were constructed as single crystals of molecular gyrotops, which are macrocage molecules with a bridged dipolar rotor. In this study, we synthesized novel molecular gyrotops with a five-membered heteroring, i.e., furan-diyl, thiophenediyl, and selenophene-diyl, and investigated the temperature-dependent orientation and rotation of the dipolar rotors inside the crystal.

中性子捕獲の断面積測定には測定試料の絶対量が必要であるが、入手する試料は必ずしも絶対量が精度よく決定されていない。そのため、試料の絶対量を非破壊で、高精度に決定する必要がある。本発表では原子力システム研究開発事業「マイナーアクチニドの中性子核データ精度向上に係る研究開発」の一環として、中性子捕獲断面積高精度決定のために、測定試料となるマイナーアクチニドの絶対量を非破壊で測定しうる放出熱測定の計画について、特にRI特有の放射線遮蔽問題の観点から報告する。また、$$^{241}$$Am $$gamma$$線標準線源を用いたベンチマークテスト測定の結果も併せて報告する。


Observation of all-in type tetrahedral displacements in nonmagnetic pyrochlore niobates

We observed all-in type Nb tetrahedral displacement in nonmagnetic pyrochlore niobates A$$_{2}$$Nb$$_{2}$$O$$_{7}$$ (A = Nd$$_{0.5}$$Ca$$_{0.5}$$ and Y$$_{0.5}$$Ca$$_{0.5}$$) through the analysis of the neutron pair distribution function and the extended X-ray absorption function spectroscopy. The all-in type Nb tetrahedral displacement, which has the character of a charge singlet state, is driven by the formation of the bonding orbital. The diffuse scattering in the X-ray diffraction, which has the resonant component in the Nb $$L$$3 edge, indicates that the all-in type Nb tetrahedral displacement has the periodicity with its short-range correlation.
