Nuclear Safety Research Center (NSRC), Sector of Nuclear Safety Research and Emergency Preparedness, Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) provides technical supports for the nuclear regulatory bodies by conducting safety researches based on the Mid-Long Term Target approved by the Japanese government. This report summarizes the organization of NSRC and the cooperative research activities with domestic and international organizations as well as the nuclear safety research activities and results in JFY 2020 on the nine research fields in NSRC; (1) severe accident, (2) radiation risk, (3) nuclear fuels in light water reactors (LWRs), (4) thermohydraulic behavior in LWRs, (5) materials degradation and structural integrity, (6) nuclear fuel cycle facilities, (7) criticality management, (8) nuclear safeguards, and (9) radioactive waste management. Also summarized are the two cross-organizational activities; (1) research for facilitating application of risk information and (2) analysis of regulatory and international information, which support the nine research activities.

Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) consulted an assessment committee, Evaluation Committee of Research and Development (R&D) Activities for Nuclear Safety Research, for interim assessment of Nuclear Safety Research, in accordance with General Guideline for Evaluation of Government R&D Activities by Cabinet Office, Government of Japan, Guideline for Evaluation of R&D in Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology and Regulation on Conduct for Evaluation of R&D Activities by JAEA. In response to the JAEA's request, the Committee assessed the progress of the R&D project according to guideline, which addressed the rationale behind the R&D project, the relevance of the project outcome and the efficiency of the project implementation during the period of the current plan. As a result, the Committee concluded that the progress of the R&D project is satisfactory. This report summarizes the result of the assessment by the Committee. In addition, the appendix of the report contains the responses from JAEA on the comments and suggestions by the Committee and the presentation materials submitted to the Committee.

Measures against environmental contamination by radioactive materials originated from the Fukushima nuclear accident (May, 2011), are being conducted in Fukushima and surrounding prefectures. Regarding to the measures, a phytoremediation experiment with several types of lawn grasses in a field scale have been carried out. Lawn grasses are generally characterized by shallow rizosphere, high density and root mat formation. Decontamination effectiveness of radioactive cesium by plant uptake and by sod removing was investigated. As a result, the range of decontamination factors by plant uptake was below than 1% because of low transfer rate form soil to plant. On the other hand, maximum decontamination factor by sod removing reached about 100%. Decontamination activities with various methods will be implemented according to the national decontamination policy and related plans in each municipality. The phytoremediation method with lawn grass would be applicable in limited circumstances.
