JAEA-Technology-2022-039.pdf:11.96MB

Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) manages wide range of nuclear facilities. Many of these facilities are required to be performed adjustment with the aging and complement with the new regulatory standards and the earthquake resistant, since the Great East Japan Earthquake and the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station accident. It is therefore desirable to promote decommissioning of facilities that have reached the end of their productive life in order to reduce risk and maintenance costs. However, the progress of facility decommissioning require large amount of money and radioactive waste storage space. In order to address these issues, JAEA has formulated a "The Medium/Long-Term Management Plan of JAEA Facilities" with three pillars: (1) consolidation and prioritization of facilities, (2) assurance of facility safety, and (3) back-end countermeasures. In this plan, Plutonium Fuel Fabrication Facility has been selected as primary decommissioned facility, and dismantling of equipment in the facilities have been underway. In this report, size reduction activities of the glove box W-9 and a part of tunnel F-1, which was connected to W-9, are presented, and the obtained findings are highlighted. The glovebox W-9 had oxidation & reduction furnace, and pellet crushing machine as equipment interior. The duration of activity took six years from February 2014 to February 2020, including suspended period of 4 years due to the enhanced authorization approval process

Two-phase flow structure in a particle bed packed in a confined channel

Ito, Daisuke*; Kurisaki, Tatsuya*; Ito, Kei*; Saito, Yasushi*; Imaizumi, Yuya; Matsuba, Kenichi; Kamiyama, Kenji

Proceedings of 18th International Topical Meeting on Nuclear Reactor Thermal Hydraulics (NURETH-18) (USB Flash Drive), p.6430 - 6439, 2019/08

In core disruptive accident of sodium-cooled fast reactor, cooling of residual fuel debris formed in the reactor core is one of important factors to achieve in-vessel retention of the fuel. To clarify the feasibility of the cooling which is called "in-place cooling", characteristics of gas-liquid two-phase flow in the debris bed must be well understood. Since the debris bed can be formed in a confined flow channel in the core, effect of the channel wall cannot be neglected. Thus, this study aims to clarify the effect of the wall on two-phase flow characteristics in the debris bed, which was simulated as a particle bed packed in a pipe. The pressure drop was measured and compared with results by previous models, and porosity and void fraction distributions were measured by X-ray radiography. Then, the pressure drop evaluation model was modified considering the wall effect, and the applicability of the models was discussed.

Effect of porosity distribution on two-phase pressure drop in a packed bed

Kurisaki, Tatsuya*; Ito, Daisuke*; Ito, Kei*; Saito, Yasushi*; Imaizumi, Yuya; Matsuba, Kenichi; Kamiyama, Kenji

Proceedings of 11th Korea-Japan Symposium on Nuclear Thermal Hydraulics and Safety (NTHAS-11) (Internet), 3 Pages, 2018/11

In the evaluation of the in-place cooling which is for the residual core materials in the severe accident of sodium-cooled fast reactors, pressure loss of two-phase flow in debris bed is one of the important factors. Although Lipinski model is already proposed for the pressure loss evaluation, the accuracy would decrease when the porosity is not homogeneous. Thus, experiment to measure the pressure loss in a packed bed of non-homogeneous porosity distribution was conducted, and the Lipinski model was modified dividing the cross section to evaluate the pressure loss in it. As a result, it was confirmed that agreement of the experimental values with the values by modified Lipinski model was better than that with the original Lipinski model.

The AVF cyclotron was operated from May 9th in fiscal 2011 and all the planned experiments on April were cancelled due to scheduled blackouts originated from the Great East Japan Earthquake. The total operation time amounted to 3,038.4 hours. The extended operation from Friday evening to Saturday evening was carried out eight times in order to supply the cancellation on April. The regular yearly overhaul and maintenance were carried out.

We present spin pumping using a Heusler alloy Co$$_2$$MnSi/Pt bilayer film. A spin current is produced by a ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) technique. The pure spin current injected into the Pt layer from the Co$$_2$$MnSi layer is detected by the inverse spin-Hall effect (ISHE), which converts the spin current into an electric current. We estimated a damping constant of the Co$$_2$$MnSi/Pt bilayer film from an angular dependence of FMR spectra. Using the damping constant efficiency of spin pumping from the Co$$_2$$MnSi layer is evaluated. We found that a mixing conductance at the Co$$_2$$MnSi/Pt interface is comparable to that at a permalloy/Pt interface.

The 3-D mechanical coupled analysis technique for the long term mechanical behavior of near field is developed. The object of analysis is extended to the disposal gallery and the near field rock, in addition to the buffer material and the overpack for previous one. The analysis model is developed with a degradation model of concrete support and modeling of the near field rock with the valuable- compliance-type constitutive equation. The remaining problems of current study are related to; (1) mechanical property and modeling of backfill material, (2) adopting a degradation model of concrete support in the prototype model, (3) examining the effect of analytical model mesh and time step for the 3-D mechanical coupled analysis. We conducted the one-dimensional consolidation test for the backfill material. The backfill material shows a similar behavior to that of buffer material. And the prototype model is developed adopting a degradation model for a concrete support and examining the effect of the model mesh and time step.

Experimental study on the effects of fault movement on the engineered barrier system

Naito, Morimasa; Saito, Yuya; Tanai, Kenji; Yui, Mikazu

Journal of Power and Energy Systems (Internet), 3(1), p.158 - 169, 2009/00

An experimental approach is introduced for understanding how the engineered barriers of a deep geological repository system are affected by fault movement. The experiments are conducted using laboratory simulation test equipment. So far, the experiments indicate that the metal overpack is rotated within the bentonite buffer due to its plasticity, but not breached. Numerical analyses are also carried out to supplement the range of the experiments, which is limited by the capability of the test equipment.
