Single-shot laser-driven neutron resonance spectroscopy for temperature profiling

The temperature measurement of material inside of an object is one of the key technologies for control of dynamical processes. For this purpose, various techniques such as laser-based thermography and phase-contrast imaging thermography have been studied. However, it is, in principle, impossible to measure the temperature of an element inside of an object using these techniques. One of the possible solutions is measurements of Doppler brooding effect in neutron resonance absorption (NRA). Here we present a method to measure the temperature of an element or an isotope inside of an object using NRA with a single neutron pulse of approximately 100 ns width provided from a high-power laser. We demonstrate temperature measurements of a tantalum (Ta) metallic foil heated from the room temperature up to 617 K. Although the neutron energy resolution is fluctuated from shot to shot, we obtain the temperature dependence of resonance Doppler broadening using a reference of a silver (Ag) foil kept to the room temperature. A free gas model well reproduces the results. This method enables element(isotope)-sensitive thermometry to detect the instantaneous temperature rise in dynamical processes.

Update of Bragg edge analysis software "GUI-RITS"

Spectral data of Bragg-edge imaging, which is one of the energy-resolved neutron imaging methods, can be analyzed by single-edge analysis and full-pattern analysis with the Bragg-edge analysis code RITS developed by Sato et al. This program has a function to generate neutron transmission data considering wavelength-dependent pulse-shape function, atomic number density, crystalline structure, etc., and to extract these parameters from the measured data by the nonlinear least-squares fitting. Last year, we worked on updating the operating environment of the platform Scientific Linux 6 and the language Python 2, which have been discontinued, to Windows 10 and Python 3, and added some functions to improve usability. GUI-RITS for the windows platform has been released to users. In this presentation, we will show concrete examples of the results of the analysis of the same data by the old and new programs, and compare the efficiency of data analysis.

Spatial distribution and preferred orientation of crystalline microstructure of lead-bismuth eutectic

To develop a lead-bismuth eutectic (LBE) cooled nuclear reactor, phase transition phenomena of LBE are very important. In the solidification of LBE, the crystalline structure is varied with the cooling process. The volumetric expansion of LBE must be clarified for the safety of an LBE cooled nuclear reactor. The time dependence of the volumetric expansion depends on the crystalline microstructure. In this study, the crystalline microstructure of the LBE samples solidified with the different cooling processes was investigated by the neutron Bragg edge imaging technique. Spatially integrated and local microstructure characteristics of LBE samples were analyzed. Characteristics of preferred orientation of LBE microstructure were clarified.

Analysis and mapping of detailed inner information of crystalline grain by wavelength-resolved neutron transmission imaging with individual Bragg-dip profile-fitting analysis

As a new method for evaluating single crystal and oligocrystal, pulsed neutron Bragg-dip transmission analysis/imaging method is being developed. In this study, a single Bragg-dip profile fitting analysis method was newly developed, and applied for analyzing detailed inner information in a crystalline grain position-dependently. In the method, the spectrum profile of a single Bragg-dip is analyzed at each position over a grain. As a result, it is expected that changes of crystal orientation, mosaic spread angle and thickness of a perfect crystal can be evaluated from the wavelength, the width and the integrated intensity of the Bragg-dip, respectively. For confirming this effectiveness, the method was applied to experimental data of position-dependent Bragg-dip transmission spectra of a Si-steel plate consisting of oligocrystals. As a result, inner information of multiple crystalline grains could be visualized and evaluated. The small change of crystal orientation in a grain, about 0.4$$^{circ}$$, could be observed by imaging the Bragg-dip wavelengths. By imaging the Bragg-dip widths, both another grain and mosaic block in a grain were detected. Furthermore, imaging results of the integrated intensities of Bragg-dips were consistent with the results of Bragg-dip width imaging. These small crystallographic changes have not been observed and visualized by previous Bragg-dip analysis methods.

The energy-resolved neutron imaging system, RADEN, has been installed at the pulsed neutron source in the Materials and Life Science Experimental Facility of the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex. In addition to conventional neutron radiography and tomography, RADEN, the world's first imaging beam-line at a pulsed neutron source, provides three main options for new, quantitative neutron imaging techniques: Bragg-edge imaging to visualize the spatial distribution of crystallographic information, resonance absorption imaging for elemental composition and temperature information, and polarized neutron imaging for magnetic field information. This paper describes the results of characterization studies of the neutronic performance and installed devices at RADEN and shows the results of several demonstration studies for pulsed neutron imaging.

Pulsed neutron imaging based crystallographic structure study of a Japanese sword made by Sukemasa in the Muromachi period

Japanese swords are very attractive not only as a work of art but also a metallurgical point of view. Since Japanese vintage swords became valuable, it is indispensable to establish non-destructive analysis method to identify some peculiar characteristics. Bragg edge imaging gives real-space distributions of bulk information in a crystalline material as well as neutron tomography. In this work, we investigated crystallographic information of a Japanese sword made by Sukemasa in Izumi province in the first quarter of the 16th century. The experiments have been performed at RADEN at J-PARC. The Sukemasa sword was measured with a counting-type 2D detector and with a CCD camera. We are now analyzing the measured 2D-transmission spectra using RITS code to obtain spatial distribution of the crystallite size, the texture variation, the d110 shift and its broadening. Complementary data analysis using white beam tomography is also on going. Detailed analysis results will be presented.

Visualization of phase distribution in lead-bismuth eutectic during one-dimensional solidification process

Solidification process of lead-bismuth eutectic (LBE) is one of the key phenomena to prevent flow channel blockage accident in an LBE-cooled accelerator-driven system. However, the solidification of liquid metal cannot be observed optically and it is difficult to detect noninvasively. In this study, the one-dimensional solidification process of the LBE was visualized by pulsed neutron transmission imaging. Neutrons have higher transmittivity to the LBE than X-ray and neutron transmission spectrum of the LBE sample can be obtained by pulsed neutron imaging technique. The solid and liquid phases of the LBE were identified during the solidification process by the presence or absence of Bragg edge in the measured neutron transmission spectrum, and the transient behavior of the solid-liquid interface could be visualized. In addition, the characteristic spatial distribution of the crystalline structure was found in Bragg-edge transmission image after the solidification.

Neutron spectrum change with thermal moderator temperature in a compact electron accelerator-driven neutron source and its effects on spectroscopic neutron transmission imaging

We simultaneously measured neutron spectra and the temperature of a polyethylene moderator at the Hokkaido University Neutron Source (HUNS) driven by a compact electron accelerator to observe the effect of any temperature change on the reliability of spectroscopic transmission measurement. The ratio of the neutron effective temperature and the moderator temperature was constant in HUNS case, although both increased by 4-5 K within one hour after the start of accelerator-operation. This indicated that the neutron effective temperature was well estimated by the moderator temperature. The effect of the temperature change can be easily avoided by excluding data collection before the moderator warms up. These results suggested that the monitoring of moderator temperature is recommended in such neutron sources with a thermal neutron moderator to guarantee reliability of spectroscopic transmission measurement without sacrifices of cost, simplicity and maintainability.

We are promoting for practical product observation by the energy-resolved neutron imaging method using high-intensity pulsed neutrons at J-PARC, under the Photon and Quantum Basic Research Coordinated Development Program from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, Japan. Bragg edge imaging, one of the energy-resolved neutron imaging methods for visualizing material properties, was applied to feasibility study of the temperature distribution of copper rod, complementary study of the texture and strain distribution of bent steel plates using neutron diffraction and EBSD, and so on. Outline of results obtained by these imaging experiments will be presented.

中性子小角散乱(SANS)は、ナノ構造の解析に有効な実験手法である。近年、中性子透過率に含まれるSANSの寄与を定量的に解析できる手法が開発され、中性子透過率スペクトルからSANSと同じくナノ構造情報が得られるようになった。これをパルス中性子透過イメージング実験に応用すれば、試料内のナノ構造の分布について高効率な2次元マッピングが可能になる。これを実現するためには、散乱中性子の検出器への入射を防ぐ必要がある。そこで本研究では、試料と検出器の間にソーラーコリメータを設置して散乱中性子を吸収、除去する方法を検討した。粒径の異なるシリカ微粒子を測定した結果、粒径によるSANSの違いを反映した中性子透過率スペクトルの違いを観測することに成功した。

A new mapping procedure for polycrystals using neutron Bragg-dip transmission is presented. This is expected to be useful as a new materials characterization tool which can simultaneously map the crystallographic direction of grains parallel to the incident beam. The method potentially has a higher spatial resolution than neutron diffraction imaging. As a demonstration, a Bragg-dip neutron transmission experiment was conducted at J-PARC on beamline MLF BL10 NOBORU. A large-grained Si-steel plate was used. Since this specimen included multiple grains along the neutron beam transmission path, it was a challenging task for existing methods to analyze the direction of the crystal lattice of each grain. A new data-analysis method for Bragg-dip transmission measurements was developed based on database matching. As a result, the number of grains and their crystallographic direction along the neutron transmission path have been determined.

The influences of bending deformation and subsequent subzero treatment on the martensite transformation behaviors in a metastable austenitic alloy Fe-25Ni-0.4C were investigated by the time-of-flight (TOF) neutron Bragg-edge transmission (BET) imaging method. Two-dimensional (2D) maps of martensite phase volume fractions and texture variations due to residual stress and lowering the temperature of the bent samples before and after subzero treatment were obtained by Bragg-edge spectral analysis. The obtained phase volume fractions were quantitatively compared with those determined by neutron diffraction.

TOFブラッグエッジ透過イメージング法を用い、塑性変形させた曲げ鉄鋼試料の微細構造を解析し、得られた結果を中性子回折法及びEBSD法により比較検証を行った。その結果、テキスチャ等は非常に良い一致を示したが、結晶子サイズを中性子回折法による消衰効果から見積もることはうまく行かなかった。そこで、回折プロファイルのブロードニング幅解析から結晶子サイズを求めることを試み、またEBSD法から結晶歪みの解析結果も合わせて再検討を行った。

中性子透過率スペクトル測定を利用した新しい中性子散乱実験

Based on the time-of-light (TOF) technique, new generation pulsed neutron sources enable novel neutron scattering experiments. Using small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) at the pulsed neutron sources, simultaneous measurements of SANS and Bragg edge transmission can be performed. From the SANS profiles, the precipitates and inclusions in metals and alloys are characterized, while the Bragg edge transmission spectra give crystallographic information about the matrix. This is a powerful tool for quantitative characterization of the microstructures in the metals and alloys. The neutron transmission experiments have potential for further development. Magnetic Bragg edge transmission analysis will be useful for magnetic materials. These new neutron scattering techniques enhance the usability and flexibility of neutron scattering experiments.

Neutron Bragg-edge transmission imaging makes it possible to quantitatively visualize the two-dimensional distribution of microstructure within a sample. In order to examine its application to engineering products, time-of-flight Bragg-edge transmission imaging experiments using a pulsed neutron source were performed for plastically bent plates composed of a ferritic steel and a duplex stainless steel. The non-homogeneous microstructure distributions, such as texture, crystalline size, phase volume fraction and residual elastic strain, were evaluated for the cross sections of the bent plates. The obtained results were compared with those by neutron diffraction and electron back scatter diffraction, showing that the Bragg-edge transmission imaging is powerful for engineering use.

パルス中性子イメージング専用装置「螺鈿」がJ-PARCの物質生命科学実験施設(MLF)に建設され、2014年11月にファーストビームを受け入れた後、装置調整と試験測定を実施中である。この装置の目的は、短パルス中性子源から得られるパルス中性子ビームの特徴を活かして、近年注目されているエネルギー分析型中性子イメージング技術を実用化し、応用研究を世界に先駆けて実施することにあり、同時に日本における最先端の中性子イメージング装置としての役割を果たすことにある。本発表では、「螺鈿」の現状について説明するとともに、コミッショニングの状況と応用研究の実施例について報告する。

Effects of muon interactions with matter on terrestrial muon-induced soft errors

宇宙から降り注ぐ放射線(一次宇宙線)と大気の相互作用で生じる二次宇宙線は、地上にある電子機器の半導体デバイスの誤作動(ソフトエラー)の原因であることが知られている。次世代型のデバイスは微細化によって放射線耐性が低下しており、近年環境ミューオンの影響が懸念されている。ミューオンは仮想光子を介した反応や負ミューオン捕獲反応により二次荷電粒子を生成する。そこで本研究ではこれらの反応に着目し、環境ミューオン起因のソフトエラー率(SER)への影響を解析した。本研究では、PHITSと多重有感領域(MSV)モデルを用いて、設計ルール(半導体部品中の基本的な配線の太さ)が25nmのNMOSFETに対するSERを解析した。その結果、環境ミューオン起因のSERは環境中性子起因のSERの数%以下となり、その主因は負ミューオン捕獲で、仮想光子を介したミューオン核反応の影響は小さいことを明らかにした。また、環境ミューオンの直接電離による影響は臨界電荷量の非常に低い領域のみに現れることも実証した。

J-PARC/MLFの中性子イメージング及び回折装置は、鉄鋼材料などの実用材のミクロスコピックな特性評価に非常に有用であると期待されている。本研究では、MLFのBL10(NOBORU)において、2次元検出器を用いて鉄鋼材料の透過イメージング測定を行った。四種類の異なる条件で鋳込みを行ったフェライト($$alpha$$)-オーステナイト($$gamma$$)の二相ステンレス鋼を試料として用いた。得られた2次元の透過スペクトルに含まれるブラッグエッジ情報を、解析プログラムRITSを用いて検証し、試料の集合組織,相分布,粒径や、相応力分布の検証を行った。

Development of a three-dimensional computed tomography system using high-speed camera at a pulsed neutron source

A neutron energy resolved three-dimensional (3D) imaging system with a high-speed video camera (CMOS, 1300 k frame/sec) and time-of-flight technique has been newly developed and installed at Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC). The aim is to investigate a spatial distribution of several elements and crystals in various kinds of materials or substances more rapidly. The system allows to obtain TOF images consecutively resolved into narrow energy ranges in the pulsed neutron energy region from 0.01 to a few keV. The camera system was successfully demonstrated to obtain the reconstructed 3D images for Cu, Fe, Pb, and Polyethylene samples and the neutron energy dependence of the CT values, which are proportional to the total neutron cross sections. With use of the energy dependence of each CT values, it is possible to emphasize the selected materials, even if materials such as Cu and Fe have similar energy dependence of CT values. The results showed that this technique has the possibility to visualize material alternatively by choosing neutron energy and emphasize materials with use of the energy dependence of CT values.

J-PARCパルス中性子源に中性子イメージング装置が建設中であり、これまでに幾つかの技術実証のための実験がJ-PARCのNOBORUにおいて行われている。新規に建設される装置の幅広い利用を図るため、当該技術の適応範囲を示すことは重要である。本報告では、幾つかの実証実験の結果を紹介するとともに、すべての元素について、評価済み核データに収録されている中性子共鳴のピーク断面積とエネルギー幅を掛けた値を比較する。この値は、共鳴吸収イメージング技術による判別性の良い指標になると期待される。
