${it In situ}$ WB-STEM observation of dislocation loop behavior in reactor pressure vessel steel during post-irradiation annealing

In order to ensure the integrity of the reactor pressure vessel in the long term, it is necessary to understand the effects of irradiation on the materials. In this study, irradiation-induced dislocation loops were observed in neutron-irradiated reactor pressure vessel specimens during annealing using our newly developed WB-STEM. It was confirmed that the proportion of $$<100>$$ loops increased with increasing annealing temperature. We also succeeded in observing the phenomenon that two $$frac{1}{2}$$$$<111>$$ loops collide into a $$<100>$$ loop. Moreover, a phenomenon in which dislocation loops decorate dislocations was also observed, and the mechanism was successfully explained by molecular dynamics simulation.

Rock thin sections are used for instrument analyses such as EPMA, LA-ICP-MS as well as microstructural observations by optical microscope. Fabrication of thin section, reported here, is one of the fundamental techniques in classical and state-of-the-art geological research. This report provides not only general procedure but also some ingenuity, precautions and equipment maintenance with visual exemplification for first-time or inexperienced users in the Tono Geoscience Center.

Surface modification effects on hydrogen absorption property of a hydrogen storage alloy by short pulse laser irradiation

A short pulse laser (the nanosecond and femtosecond) was applied to hydrogen absorbing alloys surface layer, and a surface modification experiment was put into effective to aim at improvement of hydrogen adsorption functionally. It was investigated about correlation between an initial hydrogen absorption reaction rate of hydrogen alloys and a laser irradiation in this research. The laser irradiation condition was done with pulse width 100 fsec and energy 0.2 - 3.4 mJ/pulse. It blazed down on hydrogen absorbing alloys (LaNi$$_{4.6}$$Al$$_{0.4}$$) and changed local order in the surface. As a result, the initial hydrogen absorption reaction rate was 1.5 - 3.0 times as fast as a irradiated sample, and the result and laser irradiated sample found out that a hydrogen absorption function improves. A laser irradiation can conclude to be effective in surface modification of the hydrogen storage materials.

Influence of discontinuous columnar defects on flux pinning properties in GdBCO coated conductors

To investigate the effect of discontinuity of 1-D pinning centers on the flux pinning in a wide range of magnetic field directions, discontinuous columnar defects (CDs) and continuous CDs were formed in GdBCO coated conductors using Xe-ion irradiations with 80 and 270 MeV, respectively. An overall shift upward in Jc, for the 80-MeV-irradiated sample compared to the 270-MeV-irradiated one, can be observed in every direction of magnetic field, which is more remarkable as temperature decreases. This implies a synergetic effect of the pinning interaction between the linearity and the discontinuity for the discontinuous CDs.

Comparative analysis of floral pigmentation between wild-type and white-flowered varieties of ${it Cyclamen graecum}$

The flower colour of ${it Cyclamen graecum}$ gra6 (wild-type) is pink-purple in the flower. On the other hand, flowers of ${it C. graecum}$ gra50 (white-flowered variant) exhibit a white colour in its flower. In this study, the relationship between floral pigmentation and expression of several anthocyanin biosynthesis genes was investigated in ${it C. graecum}$ gra6 and gra50. The pigments in the flower consist mainly of malvidin 3,5-diglucoside in gra6. White-flowered ${it C. graecum}$ gra50 possessed lower amounts of anthocyanins, but higher amounts of flavonols compared to gra6. Gene expression analysis demonstrated that expression of the dihydroflavonol 4-reductase gene 2 (${it CgraDFR2}$) was lower in gra50 compared with gra6, whereas the expression of other key genes did not differ greatly. These results suggest that the white-flowered variant of gra50 may result from a defect in expression of the ${it CgraDFR2}$ gene.

The National Centralized Tokamak (NCT) facility program is a domestic research program for advanced tokamak research to succeed JT-60U incorporating Japanese university accomplishments. The mission of NCT is to establish high beta steady-state operation for DEMO and to contribute to ITER. The machine flexibility and mobility is pursued in aspect ratio and shape controllability, feedback control of resistive wall modes, wide current and pressure profile control capability for the demonstration of the high-b steady state.

Design studies are shown on the National Centralized Tokamak facility. The machine design is carried out to investigate the capability for the flexibility in aspect ratio and shape controllability for the demonstration of the high-beta steady state operation with nation-wide collaboration, in parallel with ITER towards DEMO. Two designs are proposed and assessed with respect to the physics requirements such as confinement, stability, current drive, divertor, and energetic particle confinement. The operation range in the aspect ratio and the plasma shape is widely enhanced in consistent with the sufficient divertor pumping. Evaluations of the plasma performance towards the determination of machine design are presented.

The dominant issue for the the modification program of JT-60 (JT-60SC) is to demonstrate the steady state reactor relevant plasma operation. Physics design on plasma parameters, operation scenarios, and the plasma control method are investigated for the achievement of high-$$beta$$. Engineering design and the R&D on the superconducting magnet coils, radiation shield, and vacuum vessel are performed. Recent progress in such physics and technology developments is presented.

While CT scan is useful for diagnosis, exposure dose derived from CT scan is relatively high. Therefore, it is important to manage patient doses and to prevent the excess exposures in young patients. JAEA developed the CT dose calculator, WAZA-ARIv2 under the collaboration research project with the National Institute of Radiological Sciences and the Oita University of Nursing and Health Sciences. In WAZA-ARIv2, users can accurately calculate exposure doses through the browser under consideration of patients information about sexes, ages (0y, 1y, 5y, 10y, 15y and adult) and fatness (small, large and extra-large body sizes). The functions of registration and database compilation of CT scan conditions and patient doses are newly added to a WAZA-ARIv2. Users can compare the distribution of patient doses in Japan with those in user's medical institution. Therefore, it will be expected that WAZA-ARIv2 can contribute the management and optimization of patients doses due to CT scan.

Many of the CT devices are in Japan. It is guessed that exposure doses of Japanese derived from CT scans are higher than others. Thus, it is needed to properly manage scan conditions and exposure doses of individual patients. JAEA developed WAZA-ARI under the collaboration research project with the National Institute of Radiological Sciences (NIRS) and the Oita University of Nursing and Health Sciences. Practical use of new version WAZA-ARI named WAZA-ARIv2 began on January 30, 2015 at the web server in NIRS. In WAZA-ARIv2, users can calculate patients doses by using only standard condition (120 kV) of X-tube voltage. In recent years, CT scans at low tube voltage against pediatric patients with high radiosensitivity are increasing. In this study, spectrum of X-ray derived from CT scan at low tube voltage was examined, and was defined in "usrsors.f" file of PHITS. We reported the characteristics of X-ray and organ doses derived from CT scan at low tube voltage (80 kV).

In medical treatment, CT scan is useful diagnostic method. On the other hand, exposure doses derived from CT scans are dependent on body sizes of patients. Therefore, consideration of body sizes is essential for accurate dose assessment of individual patients. JAEA developed the CT dose calculator, WAZA-ARIv2 under the collaboration research project with the National Institute of Radiological Sciences and the Oita University of Nursing and Health Sciences. WAZA-ARIv2 enable users to accurately calculate exposure doses of patients with sexes, ages (0y, 1y, 5y, 10y, 15y and adult) and fatness (small, large and extra-large body sizes). In the future, we will be plans to add the dose calculation functions corresponding to the scan conditions at low tube voltage and multi-detector row (more 80) CT devices to WAZA-ARIv2. We reported the system and future plans of WAZA-ARIv2 corresponding to dose calculation of patients with various body sizes.

In-situ weak-beam scanning transmission electron microscopy for quantitative dislocation analysis in nuclear materials during post-irradiation annealing

We developed a weak-beam scanning transmission electron microscopy (WB-STEM) by installing a novel beam selector, annular detector, a high-speed CCD camera and imaging filter in a camera chamber of an aberration corrected electron microscope. In-situ observation confirmed that the newly-developed WB-STEM has improved the ability to observe the dynamic behavior of dislocation loops. In addition, we performed a numerical simulation of dislocation loop behavior using molecular dynamics, and confirmed that the experimental results were well explained by the theoretical analysis. Therefore, this WB-STEM is expected to be useful for understanding the embrittlement mechanism of nuclear materials such as reactor pressure vessel (RPV) steels.
