The cross section decreasing in the vicinity of neutron threshold exhibited a steep rise within 150 keV above the threshold. We draw attention to a possible relation of this striking behavior to the 3P valence neutron resonance known in neutron capture in the mass region A 90.

Asian terrestrial ecosystems occupy vast areas from tropical forests and wetlands in Southeast Asia to boreal ecosystems in northeastern Asia, and as well as alpine ecosystems on the Tibet Plateau. These ecosystems make a significant contribution to the regional and global carbon budgets. Accurately quantifying CO/CH balances is critical for setting targets for their emission reductions and to identify and promote effective mitigation strategies. Since the mid-1990s, we have been installing multichannel automated chamber systems boreal ecosystems in Siberian and Alaska, temperate forests and grassland in East Asia, wetlands and permafrost on the Tibetan Plateau, and subtropical and tropical forests in Southeast Asia, for continuous measurements of forest floor CO budget as well as net ecosystem production. Among the sites, eight ecosystems are using for conducting soil warming experiments. This talk will present CO/CH fluxes and their controls of representative Asian terrestrial ecosystems with the chamber network.

In this study, we updated our data-driven estimation of soil respiration (SR) across Japan with observation data (eight sites across Japan), remote sensing data (MODIS land products), and random forest regression. Our estimation shows a reasonable performance with R=0.87 for remote sensing only model and R = 0.91 for remote sensing and in-situ combined model. Based on the established model, we also produced upscaled estimations of SR across Japan with 1km spatial resolution from 2000 to 2020. Intercomparison of our estimation with other available datasets was also conducted to understand advantages of our estimation. Our results show spatially more explicit variations compared with other global products. In addition, our advantage is to capture temporal variations (e.g. 8 days). We also confirmed that previous estimations do not reproduce our observation network datasets, indicating consistent observation approach is important to upscale soil respiration.

To investigate soil CO/CH fluxes, we installed multi-channel automated chamber measurement systems in two cool-temperate forests of Tomakomai (natural recovered forest following the typhoon in 2004) of Hakkaido and Fuji-Hokuroku (65-year-old larch plantation) of central Japan. Soil carbon fluxes were continuously measured at hourly and two-hour intervals during snow-free season. In both forests, soil CO/CH fluxes showed high seasonal variation. Soil respiration increased exponentially with changing in soil temperature, whereas soil CH uptake was negatively correlated with soil moisture. Though both the soil temperature and moisture were not significant difference between two forests, we found significant larger soil respiration as well as CH absorption in Fuji-Hokuroku larch forest as compared with that of Tomakomai natural forest probably due to the higher root biomass and soil organic carbon.

Soil respiration (SR) is one of the most essential components of soil carbon cycles. Many observation stations directly measure SR using chambers. In this study, we updated our data-driven estimation of SR across Japan with observation data (eight sites across Japan), remote sensing data (MODIS land products), and random forest regression. As soil meteorological variables, we used soil temperature and moisture by a process-based model, the Simple Biosphere model including Urban Canopy (SiBUC). Our estimation shows a reasonable performance with R = 0.72 for the in-situ model and R = 0.73 for remote sensing and in-situ combined model on average. Based on the established model, we also produced upscaled estimations of SR across Japan with a spatial resolution of 1 km from 2000 to 2020.

Methane (CH) is the second most important greenhouse gas after carbon dioxide (CO), contributing to human-induced global warming. To investigate warming impacts on soil CO emission and CH uptake, we conducted warming experiment with multi-channel automated chamber measurement system in five forests from northern Hokkaido to Miyazaki. Both CO emission and CH uptake rates were generally higher under the experimental warming condition than under the control condition at almost all of the sites. The seasonal variation in CH flux was more sensitive to soil moisture than that in CO flux. Results demonstrated that both fluxes can be enhanced by changing microbial activity or soil surface moisture through warming treatment.

Forest soil is an important sink of atmospheric methane (CH) in natural terrestrial ecosystems. However, there is still large uncertainty for the spatial variation of CH4 uptake rate in forest soils. In this study, we conducted field measurements for soil CH flux and environmental parameters in five forests in Western Honshu. There were significant negative relationships between soil moisture and soil CH uptake rate in the beech forest site and the red pine forest site, indicating that heterogeneity of soil moisture was one of the dominant factors for spatial variation of soil CH absorption in the sites. On the other hand, there was no significant relationship between soil moisture and soil CH uptake rate in the other three forests, suggesting that the dominant factors for the spatial variation of soil CH absorption might be different depending on the ecosystem.
